@UCSlTVN1ZY1MErko1Dd8JVoA it’s because on the console you often don’t get a locked 120fps unlike a 3080 etc, also it’s options at the end of the day and more options are better for some people being able to play Native 1440p at 120fps with vrr on to cope with drops might be preferable to what they have now on ps5 which is 1080p at 120fps and the ps5 can do 1440p 120 probably on most games it would just be a question of settings to achieve it. Xbox currently does this better and has done so since launch but it’s positive for the people who will benefit from it
@FilippoRossano2 жыл бұрын
@UCSlTVN1ZY1MErko1Dd8JVoA It's pretty obvious, cause the vast majority of 120 fps mode games runs way off mark of the 120 locked. They can't reach 120 and keep it steady, that's why VRR is a must for those modes. And they run even in dynamic res, so 1440p is the top end but without this mode you'll lose all the middle res between 1080p and 1440p, plus downscaling+upscaling artifacts.

One benefit of a 1440p screen I don't see mentioned very much: If a game is not exactly 1080p or 4K, then you're getting scaling from the game's native resolution DIRECTLY to 1440p, without needing to scale to one of those other resolutions first. So for example, scaling directly from 1800p to 1440p is going to look a lot cleaner than scaling from 1800p to 2160p, and then back down to 1440p.

There’s 0 chance Microsoft didn’t speed up the boot process in the actual Xbox kernel in order to enable that faster boot-up time. No one deliberately makes their OS slower for no reason with a needlessly long video. I’m sure this is really in response to the pressure from green companies trying to get them to make Energy Saver the default mode. The downside for that mode of course is taking longer to boot up from power-down. So they likely spent some time optimizing the kernel to boot faster, so they could make Energy Saver the default mode. Which they did, and which The Verge article talks about.

The PSVR2 inside out tracking actually seems considerably more advanced than the Quest 2/Rift S, because it shows more 3D understanding of the environment around you. Both the Quest 2 and RiftS have the theoretical capability to do what Sony showed, but Meta has yet to actually implement it in publicly available releases. To be fair to Meta though, despite the price increase the Quest 2 is one of the best selling HMDs of all time, as successful as any other mobile console with more than 10 million units sold, possibly more. I really don't think meta is losing money overall, Sony and Microsoft subsidize hardware too! The price increase of the Quest 2 probably just means Meta makes a margin of profit.

In a sense, Quest has better support for inside out tracking because acceleration was built into the chip. I’m sure PS5 has enough compute to do it just fine on RDNA2 cores, but it doesn’t have those dsps the Snapdragon chip uses to process machine vision. So inside out tracking will take away some GPU resources. I’d wonder just how much overhead it adds. Shouldn’t be too bad though, if comparing Quest 1 tracking, that chip only had 10% ML compute of the Quest 2 if I remember right.

Personally though, I really enjoy VR otherwise, both PC VR and the Quest 2 are great in my opinion (but again, VR isn't necessarily fun/interesting for everyone so I understand if you're just not into it). PSVR2 honestly looks like it'll be great, as long as they get the cool games going. I've never owned a Playstation but I'd prolly get one if PSVR2 turns out as nicely as the specs suggest.

PSVR2 is a huge upgrade and has comparable if not better specs than current PC headsets. PSVR was designed to be low cost, and to be easily compatible with the low powered PS4. 1:10:30 TAA struggles a lot at lower resolutions, but not just below 540p. Even gaming at 1440p or lower on a bigger screen, a lot of games look extremely soft and blurry in motion. On a small handheld screen it's important to keep as much clarity as possible, but I'd argue its even more important on larger screens as the issues get even more noticeable. As to modern rendering techniques requiring a temporal solution. I've found that most of that comes down to reconstructing sub native effects which isn't necessary on all devices.

Yeah, 1440p allows 120Hz (+HDR) without requiring HDMI 2.1 (if Sony doesn't mess that up). There is also the distant hope that some titles that render at ~1440p output anyways for performance will allow native 1440p output, upscaling from some lower resolution to 4k and then downscaling often doesn't go all to well for clarity (eg HFW performance has issues). I'm not gonna hope for studios to TARGET 1440p as output resolution. Ragardlwee what else we get: Sony, please don't fuck up on these points: * allow 120Hz without HDMI 2.1 * allow to still set games to 4K, not just 1080p of there's no 1440p option If you do that I'll be very satisfied and will remain a loyal customer.

@@9SMTM6 i thought PS5 already has the HDMI 2.1 in the box and outputs at 32gbps instead of the ideal 48gbps? I really do hope that this firmware update is native 1440p at 120hz as most IPS monitors are really at its best at 1440p at 120hz
@9SMTM62 жыл бұрын
@@illumillukilluallukalluto8861 whatever that cable (and the PS5 itself) might be, if the remaining equipment doesn't have HDMI 2.0 that doesn't matter. Both my, not inexpensive, Soundsystem and my otherwise perfectly acceptable monitor have only HDMI 2.0b. If the cable would not support whatever I might want to do, we'll, still a shame and maybe it's not cheap, but buying a cable is not a showstopper. Buying a new Soundsystem and Monitor just because Sony is too cheap to support IMO required output resolutions was not something I was ready to do.

It's also important to remember that vast majority of players don't follow gaming news/culture, etc. Most will see "modernized gameplay mechanics" and "from the ground up" on the blog or store page and think "LTOU2" combat/stealth/action/levels/etc. It's the natural assumption and these players will be blindsided once they play.
