I think there might be more to it than that. I did some digging and checked out the resumes of their game directors and, unless I'm mistaken or misinformed, it looks like creative directors serve as consultants or some type of senior assistant for other games before they spin up and lead another project as a director. If this is the case and they do so with multiple senior personnel, I can see how it would foster cohesion, effective comms, and keep a number of important team members on the same page regarding new ideas and lessons learned. Don't get me wrong, I think you're completely right about Insomniac having strong project management as well as both setting and sticking to reasonable goals. I think allows for them to do the personnel & project rotations I described above and results in exceptional workflow. Edit: they also probably have some of the best tooling engineers in the business, I'd imagine. You guys have completely lost the plot on the Witcher 3 Next Gen update 'expectations'. I EXPECT my 3090 and 13900k to be utilized, yet in Witcher 3's next gen update, with or WITHOUT RT, the GPU is being under utilized, by a large amount, due to this game being so unoptimized that it is somehow incurring a CPU bottleneck on the best CPU available. Blaming consumers for this under the guise of expectations is pathetic. It's like you didn't even look at GPU utilization and play with the graphics settings to see how poorly the DX12 version of this patch scales. This has been a trend with you guys as of the last year though, either purposely ignoring issues like this, or going out of your way to make excuses and shift the blame for poorly optimized titles. I've been subbed for years, but I've had enough and can no longer support this kinda thing. You guys are in a position to call devs out for a release's technical issues, shine a light on them, and push them to fix them...but half the time you do the opposite now. So I'm gone. 38:26 - Again with the middling hardware and "ultra" settings. Guys, come on, like many of us told you on Twitter: The Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update runs bad regardless of settings with any RT setting on. The game runs bad with 4K Ultra Performance DLSS, which is essentially 720p, in the LOW Preset just with RT GI on a 10900k paried with an RTX 3080. Midrange hardware optimization is simple with TW3. Turn off RT, stay away from Ultra+ settings. That's all you can do for now. And if you want to use RT then cap the framerate somewhere in the 30-50 range (VRR monitor) and prioritize GI and AO over reflections and shadows, RT currently is EXTREMELY expensive on the CPU (yes you read that right, CPU, not just GPU) so capping the framerate lower gives room for DLSS to actually do something.

John's small existential moment at 1:04:43 about liking High on Life and Callisto Protocol when they're so divisive among audiences and critics brings up an interesting point in general. A lot of critics are hired to reflect the "mainstream" opinion as much as possible, because the outlet hiring them wants to appeal to as broad an audience as possible with their review output. But critics are reviewing things like games often well before those games have come out, so there is no "mainstream" opinion. So you wind up in a feedback loop where a critic says something because that's what they think the mainstream opinion will be, but people reading or watching the review don't have an opinion on it until they hear what the critic says and think "oh the reviews are saying this, so it must be what everyone thinks". For John, I'd say he's wrong for saying that he likes "bad games", he just has different tastes to what a lot of critics do. John's tastes aren't always mainstream, and he's not afraid to say that he likes something or dislikes something based on his own preferences, and that's great! Having a diversity of tastes and opinions about what games people enjoy is really important for an outlet like Digital Foundry with the wide scope of the games and topics they cover.

38:50 a big part of the problem here is with Nvidia's pricing and the fact that stores are still stacked with 3000 series cards, while it's true that the 3080 is a 2 year old product being replaced, it's still being sold right now to costumers at it's launch MSRP. And it's "replacement" costs twice as much, not really an option, the market is in an awkward place thanks to Nvidia's insane prices. I do see John's point that today a "Crysis" wouldn't be appreciated, it would be derided for running like crap.

Putting this next gen witcher update in the same sentence as Crysis is laughable though, since it doesn't actually stress the hardware super hard...it just doesn't use it. I am almost constantly under 100% GPU utilization with this update, especially without RT. Performance is worse across the board too, even on basic ultra settings without RT. They took a game that ran fantastically, scaled very well with high end hardware and high framerates, and made good use of multithreading, especially for the time, and turned it into a veritable sh*tshow. Even a 13900K and 6400Mhz C32 DDR5 cannot keep a 3090 fed in this mess.

Great episode as always. Hope all of you get a good break! As a 3080 + 3070 (laptop) owner myself , I'd wager that it's not a case of people with last gen cards expecting RT ultra settings. The issue with a lot of ray tracing implementations is that there isn't a lot of granularity in the settings. It's an all or nothing toggle more often than not. I'm not sure if this is due to the nature of ray tracing , though my lay understanding is that resolution can be lowered for each type of RT. It would be nice if RT settings were more scalable on PC and thus yield more potential for optimised settings.

I literally just received my 7900xt a couple hours ago. I know its not the best value but its a big leap compared to my 6700xt for my LG C1 OLED. Factoring in dollar exchanges and taxes, I saved well over the 10% that the US market sees. I guess I am saying that other markets have different price pressures which could lead to more sales of a 7900xt outside of the US market.
@rare6499 Жыл бұрын
I just bought an XT as well. I think it should have been £100 less but honestly I think the card is pretty good. At 1080/1440p the XT is exceptionally fast, as fast or faster than the 4080. At 4k it eases off because of its reliance on infinity cache, but it’s still a good card. It offers 3090Ti levels of RT performance which was a 1500-2000 card not that long ago.

The push away from “bespoke” handheld experiences designed around the hardware on small portable units to huge handhelds trying to run AAA which will run at low settings and low fps not designed for it isn’t a great move. It’s neat to try these games but I miss older handhelds like DS and psp.

Made no sense for DF not to mention anything about DLSS 3 frame generation in their AMD performance comparisons. That one feature makes an incredible difference!

I've yet to actually use it. The lag in A Plague Tale is awful, it breaks the framerate in cutscenes in the Witcher, and it isn't needed on either Spider-man games as the 4080 and 4090 run it easily with DLSS Quality.

There is a quite a bit of difference between 2070 Super and 6700XT. 5700XT is 2070 Super level card,while 6700XT is 2080Ti level if not a bit stronger. Well except in Raytracing. In RT Nvidia rules.

Thank you, Rich, for acknowledging inflation. As someone who built my first pc 3 years ago, right before C-19, I appreciate Alex's take on future proofing your system. I decided to buy a 2080S and looking back, I'm very grateful I went with Nvidia. I'm able to turn down settings on MW 2/ WZ 2 and utilize my 1440p's monitor full 165 hz refresh rate, while also being able to turn on RTX and DlSS, in a game like CP 2077 or Spiderman. If I went with AMD, purely to get some extra frames in MW 2019, I would be regretting my decision right now. I would be wishing I was more forward thinking and not able to turn on any RTX features in games that released years later. Yes, I know 6000 series AMD can run RT, but the performance difference is massive. DLSS 3/ frame gen, along with high fps RTX performance is why I'll eventually move to a 40 series card. I know AMD's FSR 3 will be good, but I can't even imagine what tech Nvidia will have at that point. The fact that AMD is barely catching up now to DLSS 2, while Nvidia is pushing double the fps of DLSS 2, says everything I need to know. The competition is key, though, so I'm really happy AMD continues to stay close behind. I even hope they close the gap completely, at which point I'll go with who gives the better price-performance, both now and moving forward.
@Loundsify Жыл бұрын
You say the performance difference is massive but the 6800 (none XT) matches the 3060ti in RT so beats your 2080S.
@jordanrich5839 Жыл бұрын
@@Loundsify That card released a year later than mine. It wasn't even an option when building my rig. I was just pointing out that AMD did have RT cards released during the last 3 years. (pre 7000) You're kind of making my point by comparing 2 generations ago (RTX 2000 series) to AMD's 6000 series, which released a month after the 3000 series. Pre C-19 is referencing before the initial spread in China. Yes, if AMD had released 6000 series cards a year earlier, maybe I would've bought one, like I said.

I think why Linus is going AMD is just because he has been on NVIDIA for like, ever and so the idea is to just go AMD once to just experience if it's good or not, if driver concerns are just a thing of the past now or if it's still real. He's talking about it in his videos, without ever having given AMD a shot even, so the idea is to just being able to properly assess AMD, personally.
@Your_Paramour Жыл бұрын
Wasn't it spawned from their "challenge" ideas they have on the WAN show? They've done one for linux and are currently doing one for intel arc.
@sokarash Жыл бұрын
Lets see if its permanent. He also switched to Linux for a month and just recently to Intel Arc, but more as an experiment if its actually viable, but with no intention to switch permanently. He is pretty mad with Nvidia, so it would be possible, but if AMD disappoints him, he will just put his old GPU (3090 I think?) back in until the next generation. He has access to all this hardware, but is smart enough to not just get the best thing just for the sake of it.
@soulshot96 Жыл бұрын
He's also pandering for views, similar to how HWUB often does with AMD. When you put out so much incorrect/lazy benchmark content, and people stop trusting you for factual reviews, you have to come up with a new gimmick I guess.

@@sokarash not permanently, he just said he'll skip Nvidia 4000, so longer than a month (it's not a Radeon "Challenge"), but we'll see what happens with 5000/8000, probably simply depends who's on top. And I don't think he'll go back to the 3090(ti), the XTX is just simply better in every way than that card, especially because he's only gaming on his system and not doing anything else.

@@chett_manly5386 Nah, he has publicly stated that he will skip 4000, when he says something like that he rarely flips. For the games he is playing (and probably most of us) the XTX will be good enough that he'll probably not even notice.
