The main reason I want a Switch successor is that I primarily play Switch games on my 4k TV. Having games like Breath of the Wild run at 900p with no AA upscaled to 1080p by the Switch, which is then upscaled (bilinearly) to 4k... The results don't look that great. But a theoretical Switch running DLSS to upscale much better to 4k... It would look significantly better. And it wouldn't require a huge chip. Edit : All these people telling me not to use it on a 4k TV. My old 1080p TV died. I'm not going to buy a 1080p tv just for a Switch.

I use mine purely in handheld, and just want a successor because it'd be better in every way: battery life, frame rates, graphics. Having said that, if it was a much better docked experience, I might use it docked (Breath of the Wild really does deserve a big screen). PC on the big screen is generally what I go for though.

In a different situation to you, but fully agree. I don't have a 4k TV yet because it's primary function is Switch and blu-rays. If a Switch successor was still fairly low power (compared to XSX & PS5) while adding modern support for 4K, VRR and even HDR, then I'd happily upgrade my TV to suit., but I don't want to have a sub-standard experience in the meantime.

I think the bigger issue is that it's not just big AAA games that are struggling on Switch, but even small indie games like Temtem struggle on the platform. The Temtem devs have spoken a bit about how the Switch's limited RAM has been a huge challenge for them with each new update, constantly having memory leak issues due to the Switch only having 3.6GB of RAM available. (and it is worth remembering that this game is only available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X that have 10 to 16 GB of RAM, the game does not have a version for old-gen consoles ) If even many of the big devs don't have the resources for a well-done Switch port, imagine the smaller ones then.

Shader compilation could for sure be done during installation but the developer would need to do work to figure out what shader combinations to compile, that's the hard part.. once you have that you can just run a custom install step, basically just executing a command that compiles the shaders. It could even be the game itself in the background. As for nvidia, surely what they mean is that it's capturing the compiled shaders for all users, basically creating a global shader cache. So the very first user would most likely still see stutter
@izuthree Жыл бұрын
The best way to do it I can think of really is to just bake it into the benchmarking tool and highly recommend you run that before starting the game to get both the most suitable settings and use a benchmark which runs through one or more areas that have all/nearly all expected assets that would need compilation. The worst case scenario is you have a benchmark which runs terribly the first time it runs (but fixes the problem) and the best case scenario is fixing the problem and providing a bit of extra quality of life with more intelligent configuration. ...but that itself relies on a dedicated benchmarking tool and that isn't the most common thing in the world either where compilation is an issue in the first place.
@TorstenSimon Жыл бұрын
I'm wondering about all the theoretical discussions at this point. As far as I can see the steam deck does this already inside steam os and the install stage. And even if you install steam os on a regular pc you see the pre shader compilation stuff before the game launches. Maybe df should take a look into that. Sure, directly fetching shaders would be even better as on the deck itself but it would be an improvement still. Not sure why it's not working on the M$ side.
@THU31 Жыл бұрын
The easiest solution is still to do it in the main menu (not just during a loading screen). I assume most people go through all the menu options to configure the game, which is a perfect time to perform the compilation. Of course when you change your drivers, shaders will have to be recompiled, but your game is already configured. But I would still rather sit in the menu for 5-10 minutes in order not to have any stutters during gameplay. The whole situation is a design problem. Somebody developed this when shaders first became a thing and they did not anticipate just how complex shading would become. It is basically the fundamental aspect of rasterization currently. Not easy to fix something designed 20 years ago.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get a ton of *new* big games this year from Nintendo, but the strength of the likes of Zelda (as well as Pikmin & Fire Emblem) will be enough to carry the Switch 1 through what will likely be its swan song year. As for Call of Duty, I’m pretty sure Microsoft specify mentioned the new console entries being brought to Nintendo hardware. So yeah, that’ll likely either require a Switch 2 or a cloud version for Switch 1 (or both). And given the 2024 will likely be the first year of that commitment, I’m leaning towards the former.

There is even a way to dump the error log from the syscon chip to find out what actually prevents a PS3 from starting up. Regarding Q5, the Steam client on Linux already pre-compiles shaders for games that do not have any explicit support for Steam doing that and it has been that way since several years prior to the Steam Deck. The pre-compilation that Steam does on all Linux systems works just as well at eliminating stutter as it does on Steam Deck. The only difference between Steam Deck and Linux desktop shader compilation ends up being that the shaders on desktop can't just be downloaded and need to be locally compiled before running the game. Playing the FF7 remake on desktop Linux I would not know about the stutter issue if DF hadn't mentioned it because I just don't encounter it.

Talking about the controllers, I have a PS4 Pro and the Dualshock it came with has an issue I think a lot of Dualshocks have, in that the "top" USB port, meaning the one between the triggers, actually broke internally, so the controller doesn't charge via that port anymore and can't even connect to the console that way. I had to get a special charging dock that charges the controller via the "bottom" port between the control sticks instead, which is a necessity because the battery life in the controller is very short thanks to the light bar that you can't turn off, so the controller has to be recharged after every play session, and the batteries can't be replaced without taking the entire controller apart. Meanwhile, the wireless X-Box 360 controller I've had for fifteen plus years at this point still works without issue, just swapping out new AAs every once in a while.

I think for shader precompilation, some major company like nvidia, amd, or even steam could have an interface for games to hook into, where they can attach a task to run every time it's detected that the GPU driver is updated. The power of the console matters here. Both Xbox and PS4/PS5 are on x86, so architecture emulation isn't even necessary but emulating machines that are meant to operate at such performance levels is tough partially due to the hardware that people doing the emulation are likely to have. The original Switch came out in March 2017 using a Maxwell 2 GPU architecture. The Maxwell 2 architecture was released in the GTX 980 in September 2014. So the GPU architecture was 2 1/2 years old at the time of the Switch release. The Switch 2 will presumably come out in March 2024 at the earliest. If it were to come out in March 2024 and use an Ampere GPU architecture, which was released in the RTX 3080 in September 2020, it would be using a 3 1/2 year old architecture. Additionally, the Apple A8 came out using the TSMC 20 nm node in Septemeber, 2014. The Switch came out with an SoC using that node in March 2017, 2 1/2 years later. The Orin chip you mention uses Samsung's 8 nm, most likely. Phones based on the Snapdragon 730 that used Samsung's 8 nm came out in August 2019. I don't know how much the Tegra X1's 20 nm was changed from the one Apple used or how much the Orin processor's 8 nm is changed from the Snapdragon 730's, but an 8 nm Orin-based Switch 2 would come out 4 1/2 years after the initial products using Samsung's 8 nm process. I know Nintendo does not like to chase technology, but I'd find it surprising that if Nintendo did go the route of introducing a mostly-derivative Switch 2 with updated technical specifications they'd choose to introduce a product that trails in those technical specifications with respect to the current state of the art even more than the original Switch did. For one thing, the original Switch was a gamble and the Switch 2 should have a lower probability of having a very low production run. Therefore Nintendo is more likely to order a more custom chip and be willing to take greater, rather than lesser, risks with the technology. For example, porting an Ampere GPU-based SoC to TSMC's 7 nm process would perhaps be a minimum. But if they were to slide the time scale of the GPU architecture one year forward from the original Switch instead of one year backward they could use a Lovelace GPU-based SoC, which will have come out 1 1/2 years before a possible March 2024 release of the Switch 2. The 5 nm process it would most likely be produced on would have been first used by Apple in a September 2020 product, 3 1/2 years before the Switch 2 SoC would use it. That would still be a full year larger delta than the original Switch displayed with respect to Apple's use of the 20 nm node (3 1/2 years for Switch 2 vs 2 1/2 years for Switch). So a Q2 2024 Switch 2 release seems to me to more likely point towards a Lovelace on 5 nm SoC than an Ampere on 8 nm SoC. Besides, from what I remember, there was never any reason for the speculation that the existence of the Orrin SoC model found in the Linux code had anything to do with Nintendo at all. Most likely it's just a variant of the Orin SoC for use in forming Orin NX and Orin Nano SKUs. Nvidia can't possibly have so many partially good 12 CPU core and 2048 GPU core chips to use for their 6 and 8 CPU core and 512 or 1024 GPU core SKUs, so they definitely need a smaller SoC to use for those SKUs.

I think another way for successor would be signing a new partnership with AMD once again to use custom chips based on latest announcement of Ryzen 7040 Phoenix with XDNA AI engine. This would also bring feature parity with competition, including NVMe SSD, VRR, HDR, hardware accelerated ray tracing support, temporal super resolution, spatial audio, eARC, analog triggers and advanced haptics. NVMe would help future Zelda titles to achieve no load screens when restarting from game over death and transition between dungeon and surface. Mario Kart would benefit analog triggers, etc. Graphics would be improved even at 1080p, like ray traced reflections and shadows.

The PS3 YLOD issue discussed around 1:09:00 was mainly caused by NEC Tokin capacitors failing, not solder issues. These caps were infamous in laptops that used them, specifically from Toshiba. Displaced Gamers did an excellent video on the subject pointing out that the whole solder issue, which did cause the 360's RROD issues, was being incorrectly attributed as the cause of the PS3's one without actually doing any research on the matter. And most of the "research" came out of one german report that X-rayed a single board. Assuming the caps dying didn't damage the Cell or RSX, the best approach to fixing these systems is not a reflow or reball, but replacing these known-defective caps.

I think part of the reason Nintendo has been extending out the Switch generation is partly due to potential production issues with a new model. Currently, the Switch is being made on 14nm, which is very low cost these days, and there isn't much competition for production capacity for orders of silicon from other companies as well which allows them to produce a lot for cheap. They probably extended the current switch timeline simply to wait out some of the production issues that were present the past two years, allowing the tech to get cheaper and capacity to produce the silicon get larger.

Using rechargeable AAs, you aren't creating ewaste, you can swap them instantly for a full charge, you can use them in other devices too, and most importantly nobody is throwing out a controller when the batteries reach end of life. Its arguable more convenient, and it's almost certainly better for the environment. While you 'can' replace internal battery packs, the average consumer probably won't (just like phones).

I've always felt that desktop-replacement style gaming laptops only make sense for people with truly mobile lifestyles, e.g. military people deployed abroad, long haul truckers, etc. The problem with such laptops is that they're not only expensive, but don't work particularly well as *laptops*. They're extremely heavy and thick and generally have below-average battery life. They often cut corners on the trackpad to lower costs. They're a pain to carry around and to actually use unplugged without an external mouse. And when you do sit down and plug in to play games, the fans are loud as hell while an ungodly amount of heat comes out through the keyboard. I've personally seen some Asus ROG laptops melt plastic parts because of the heat. If your lifestyle isn't super-mobile, e.g. a college student staying in the same residence for 1 year, then for the cost of a desktop-replacement laptop, you could buy either a real desktop or a console, AND a cheap laptop with genuine portability - and still have some cash left over for buying games. That is how I did it in college - I had a $800 desktop and a $120 monitor in my room, plus a $450 laptop that had integrated graphics with 8 hours of battery life. At the time, to get a gaming laptop with comparable performance to my desktop, I would've had to spend at least $1800 on something that weighed 10 lbs and got maybe 3 hours of battery life at best. With Dropbox, syncing school assignments between my desktop and laptop was very seamless. Since my schoolwork wasn't resource intensive, that $450 laptop was perfect for what I used it for (editing documents on campus, often without a charger).
@MsMarco6 Жыл бұрын
That's not so true anymore, desktop class laptops have become a lot lighter and sleeker over the past few years and cost has been pretty comparable to desktop, the old style massive desktop replacement really doesn't exist anymore. For example I bought a legion 7 with a rtx 3070 for about £1200 earlier this year (other 3070 laptops were going as low as £900) and it only weighs about 5lbs and is the size of a regular 16" laptop. Bear in mind this was during the height of the gpu shortage so a 3070 desktop would've cost similar amounts and once you price in a comparable 165hz hdr monitor it would've been more expensive so getting a desktop plus laptop definitely isn't the cheaper option anymore. Yes performance isn't quite the same but it isn't far off at all (about 3060 ti equivalent) and the portability more than makes up for it, not because I take it outside but more the ability to use it on the sofa or in bed or the kitchen, I hate being chained to a desk being able to use my PC wherever I want is important to me I grew up with laptops and so am far more comfortable with them. And thanks to the Mux switch I can disable the Dgpu when unplugged and get similar battery life to a regular laptop when I need it. At the end of the day I think laptop people and desktop people are just different. I much prefer having an all in one experience which I can take anywhere both in the house and in the world and i'm happy sacrificing a few percentage points in terms of performance for the quality and convivence. And it really is only a few percentage points nowadays especially in the mid range, a 3060 laptop and desktop only have a 5% difference for example and for a similar price why wouldn't you choose the laptop? After all a laptop can do everything a desktop can do but that definitely doesn't work the other way around

Gotham Knights did not communicate this well, and the Avengers just went heavier with the live service aspects than anyone expected to the point that no one could be bothered to play the game. I still believe a Pro model would be the best way to handle it. That way Nintendo would retain its huge install base for its first party titles (which still perform well), and give players with higher demands for third party titles a way to play those games at an improved performance. This premium hardware would probably help Nintendo to maintain its momentum throughout the next two years and help it become the best selling platform of all time.
