They added a loooot of cut content back into the Remastered version. The Asylum Experimentation Rooms were entirely cut, the Seraph Queen boss never made it out of concept due to time constraints, 2 of The Five's locations were also cut (those bosses were moved to the Prison with the Lizard King instead) and a second Violator was added into the Experimentation Rooms instead of behind the Level 10 Coffin Gate near the Deadside gates (from the N64 version). That's not even including Yort, a cut boss covering the entrance to Baton and the Loa life upgrades. Nightdive haven't just remastered the game - They've finished the job that Iguana didn't get given the time to do by Acclaim Entertainment. They've done an incredible job in creating an experience that's not just the original game, but the intended experience from start to finish. It's an incredible remaster.

Great video. Thanks for showing the editor. Reminds me of messing with unreal tournament and the dark engine editor on theif from thr same era. It's amazing how complex making a 3d game is, and this was the infancy. I can't comprehend how much more complex everything is today. Imagine assassin's Creed or cyberpunk in an editor like this. I will say some semi modern editors are intuitive at least a bit. The neverwinter nights 1 and 2 editors made it relatively easy to throw a map together, although they were designed for gamers to do just that. Unreal was a pain the ass having to carve out boxes out of solid nothingness, if I'm remembering that right, it was two decades ago now... Man I'm getting old :(

What Nightdive's been doing lately is making me like them better than BluePoint. Fantastic overview of the original release as well as the remaster, I particularly enjoyed the in-depth look into the editor. We're gonna need a 3D model of John now, with glasses of course.

Thanks John, for putting all this effort into a video about a remaster of an obscure 90's game! Much appreciated !!

This video reminds me of why i love the DF Retro Series so much. Shadow Man scared me when i was a kid- not because it was too dark or grim, but because i only had a playstation and i could not bare the stuttering.

Hell yeah! I beat this marvelous game on N64 back in 2000. I have had a warm place for it in my heart ever since. Even got it on Steam a few years back. I'll be getting this on PS4...hopefully.

Well, this has already been done on Rare Replay, which is where I played Jet Force Gemini for the first time and I loved it. It's the same kind of conversion work as Nightdive does, faithful uprezed graphics with touch ups to textures and lighting in addition to reworked controls

Same, imo the smooth look of the hd remasters take away from the atmosphere

Yes! Definitely. I wish the remaster included some sort of Post Processing filter to bring some of that look back.

PS1 version also had a tweaked shadowgun - it took constant amount of time to quickcharge the weapon to the max power regardless the level you have. On all the other platforms the more level you have the longer you have to charge the shadow gun and that's dumb.

I had nightmares where I had to hunt down dark souls and in it I dreamt of avery marx swimming from a machine that fit into the sides of his ribs. He was swimming in a pool inside the building. The colors of this game are so subconscious. This game really takes you places

This is so great! Love this game that had affected me greatly as a teenager on the N64. Fantastic music and mood through the whole game. I had totaly missed this remaster and makes me so happy! I hope there will be a physical release for Nintendo Switch some day. Will get the PC version for sure until then. Great video as usual! I really like the old low-poly look with new light effects, it really makes it feel familiar and almost like you could miss remeber this looks something like this back in the day when you first played it, but still new and fresh. Love it!

Fun fact: Shadow Man is one of the two games to be released here in Brazil with Brazilian Portuguese subtitles on the Nintendo 64 (the other one being South Park... yeah, it makes no sense that only two M-rated games were translated), and it was a really good translation. Thanks to that, I was able to understand this game's story, which made me put this game on my top 3 games of all time. I hope Nightdive Studios kept that Brazilian Portuguese translation in this version. As for visuals, I still like the N64 graphics the most. I don't know why, but maybe that's because it looks darker (but not as dark as the PS1 version) and it fits this game's aesthetics much more than the brighter visuals, like the DC/PC/remastered versions. I think Shadow Man looking grimmier, dirtier actually enhances its atmosphere. If there's a way to "remove" (or toggle off) these enhancements to make the game look "worse" on purpose, then I'll be definitely buying the remastered version.

You can turn the HD textures off
@reneeelizabeth94733 жыл бұрын
My understanding is Nightdive don't actually own the rights to the PT-BR localization, so it wasn't able to be included for legal reasons, which is unfortunate. You can turn the HD textures off, but not the new lighting effects.
@Renan_de_Souza3 жыл бұрын
@@reneeelizabeth9473 Hmm... I honestly didn't know that translations have their own rights apart from the rights of the game itself. I thought they were just one cohesive thing, so if you own the rights for the game (and they do), they own everything else about it (i.e. the other languages that are listed on Steam). If they wanted to, I'd gladly translate the game to PT-BR, but I have no idea how feasible that is. And yeah, I've seen a video were a guy turns the HD textures off, but I wasn't sure about the new lighting effects (they were my main concern, to be honest), but thank you for letting me know. Maybe they'll patch that option in the future... But oh well, I guess I'll have to play it either way, because I really want to see those brand new/previously cut areas. BTW, nice Eileen pic! :D

Shadow Man is like a fine wine of the wild west early 3D era. The first time I reached the exterior of the asylum on N64 I was stunned. How was a area this large and nightmarishly surreal possible?

Glad to see many people played and liked this game. It's one of those gems you discover and experience alone and for the longest time, then you find out that you weren't alone after all. Edit: have you played Little Big Adventure and the Ecstatica games? Almost no one talks about these gems and it's interesting to have your take if you did play them.

Amazing work John. I loved the game back in the days and was really excited when they announced a remaster. It’s good to see some love for Shadow Man again. I’ve immediately bought the pc-version and will buy the Xbox-Version once it hits stores (which hopefully isn’t too far ahead)
@charoleawood3 жыл бұрын
How much of it have you played? I'm finding issues with gamepad controls and the framerate. I think the framerate issue is something endemic to the game itself, because I could also see it in John's video, and it might be a problem with the camera. I do really love the reworked textures and lighting, though, and I'm very happy to be playing Shadow Man again though I already have it on Dreamcast
