DOA3 looks AMAZING for a 2001 game. Nothing on PC even came close to this level of polish, detail, geometric complexity and the sheer level of FX being used. I only had a PC at the time, i was so jealous.
@Psythik2 ай бұрын
You probably just didn't have a proper graphics card at the time. I bought my first GPU right around 2001 and it completely transformed PC gaming for me. Trying to play PC games in software mode back then was brutal. Textures were blurry, framerates were stuttery, and everything was so pixelated from having to run at stupid low resolutions like 320x240 just so the game would boot. Plugging in a GPU was a night and day difference; completely blew away anything that consoles of the era could do, even the XBOX. I was gaming at 1600x1200@85hz in the 2000s, while the very few XBOX games could go beyond 640x480i, and the ones that did usually had to upscale just to run at a mere 720p60. GPUs convinced me to switch to PC gaming for good. I bought a 360 back in the day for Halo 3 but that was my last console, and probably will be for the rest of my life.
@waterheart952 ай бұрын
@Psythik Their was no pc fighting game as good looking as this in 2001. PC racing games in 2001 and 2002, for example, were behind games like Midtown Madness and Gran Tursimo 3 in detail. Resolutions were higher on pc, but geometry and detail were lower in general for pc games due to mostly api limits. 2001 and 2002 were a crazy year for console gaming visual wise. PCs were more capable, but libery wise, you didn't Jrpgs, fighting games, and bunch of other games at the time compared to now. Also, console ports in that era were rather shit generally.
@rizzo-films2 ай бұрын
@Psythik I wasn't playing anything in software mode, I had a 3D accelerator and built my own gaming PC. I didn't even mention resolution, so your list of specs is irrelevant. Again, I was talking about the level of polish, detail and amount of FX being used. Some popular PC games that year were Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Serious Sam, Tribes 2, Max Payne -- all of which still had qualities of primitive 90's games, with low poly models (compared to DOA3), limited animations and not even close to the level of flash and polish in this game. Maybe you don't remember, but flashy, cinematic games were a thing on consoles before they were on PC. We had higher screen resolutions, higher resolution textures and games could contain more content loaded on multiple install disks, but they didn't have that in-your-face console polish and geometric detail, not until GPU's became more popular, which allowed per-pixel shaders to become more prominent, and then PC games and console ports started to have better options than consoles. That was right around the corner, though.

@senorsnipey1595 I do remember pc gaming, even with the best hardware, wasn't perfect due to either a game not liking your gpu, cpu ram, drive, or some random piece of hardware. I didn't have too much of a connection with DOA3 as I only got to play it when I borrowed a friend's Xbox a year or so before the Xbox 360, but DOA4 was an absolutely special game to me for so many reasons. It was the first fighting game I ever remember playing online, and until recently with Arc Systems games, the lobby experience as pretty unmatched. Big screens to watch matches, funny avatars to run around the space in, etc., and the game was a graphics showpiece. One big thing I remember was my mother walking into my room to get something from the closet, and I wanted to show her just the attract demo of the game, and DOA being one of those series that doesn't shy away from the fan service, I almost nearly regretted my decision, but the takeaway she had was, and I'm paraphrasing, "Holy crap! Look at how good these graphics look!!" But the one thing I miss about the series were the dynamic stages. People want everything to be super "balanced"(boring) circular arenas, and maybe stage transitions, but Seaside Market in DOA4 had SO MUCH dynamism with the stage layout, fighting down stairs, being able to hop over a table and deliver a jumping kick, knocking someone off the railing and then jumping down to the beach area.. So good! Not to mention the Ninja Forest of Kyoto in Bloom. Man we were eating good as gamers back in those days.

Pop Fiction on the old GameTrailers actually determined that the replacement of the library music track with the Arabic chanting was done before the game’s actual release for some non-public outcry reason.

Still have my Halo green Xbox with matching controller S and also that crappy madcatz controller with the built in fans. My Uncle had the Dreamcast. I also had the PS2 and GameCube with it those were the Golden years.

LOVED Crimson Skies on the Xbox. It felt like a remaster of the OG PC game. it looked so much batter than the original PC title. I used to just fly around in this game on the xbox for long periods of time in awe

I have fond memories The Bouncer multiplayer with the Multitap, especially knocking everyone over with the ragdoll physics.

Kinda coincidental I been watching Kakuto Chojin and Dead or Alive videos lately and this pops up lol. Even bought DOA 4 and 5 along with Kakuto Chojin recently. I feel like both franchises should make a comeback in some way especially Kakuto Chojin since it also lives very rent free with me and imo it had some interesting ideas that probably could've been fleshed out in a sequel or spiritual successor. Unfortunately both franchises won't especially Kakuto Chojin but idk, it has a soft spot with me. If only Microsoft weren't muddled with so many boneheads maybe we could get another DOA or even Killer Instinct due to their prior ties.

The xbox og was a true beast...its hardware was like a 1 gen more than ps2 and gamecube. it's amazing it could play doom 3 and half life 2.

And i prefer the Xbox version of Doom 3 to the PC one.

@charoleawood2 ай бұрын
@@Emulator_Crossing i feel the way they restructured the levels for the Xbox lends to better flow. Also, the Xbox version is how i fell in love with Doom 3 in the first place, so the PC and 360 versions just feel wrong to me. Doom 3 is a technical showpiece for original Xbox hardware and that goes a long way too, a stunning achievement on a fixed platform.

I wouldn’t go that far. Maybe 1/3 of a gen more for certain games. The best looking stuff on PS2 and GameCube definitely match the best looking stuff on Xbox.
@DavidSmith-bv8mv2 ай бұрын
You got one thing wrong buddy. The Gamecube was a little purple beast in its own right that held its own. Some of the best looking games that gen are on the Cube. The Xbox & Gamecube are pretty damn close in graphics/visuals unlike compared to PS2. The Xbox had the best textures and could do more shader effects overall/ and certain shaders better and was a beast for shadow rendering. The Gamecube had excellent textures and can do significantly more polygons on screen and much higher res alpha transparancy effects ( more GPU bandwidth ) and certain shaders effects can pretty much mimic the Xbox look with okay/decent shadow rendering for the time. Both equally had excellent lighting capabilities, both could do per pixel lighting (although easier on Xbox ) and normal maps no problem.

My favorite original Xbox games are Panzer Dragoon Orta, Ninja Gaiden Black, Fable and Conker. About John question, no, I never played Kakuto Choujin, but I was really a fan of fightning games and I still am.

Hey it's Audi! It's weird how Xbox started so so so well right off the bat. Really impressive for a console market newbie. Microsoft shouldn't have lost Itagaki at least, I always wondered what would have happened if they poached him like Sony did with Kojima.

I LOOOOOOOOOVE „Crimson Skies“ really really much. And thx so much for putting it in. It’s just like a Wing Commander style game for me and maybe that’s why I loved it so much.

DoA isn't a "button masher" --- it's intuitive and brilliant.
@3dmarth2 ай бұрын
I think what he meant is that it's very accessible- you can just pick up a controller and start hitting buttons, and your character will move fluidly, giving an impression of competence (and making it more fun for a total n00b than some other games of its kind). There is also depth for players who want to develop their skills, of course!

Only to new players. Existing players already have their favorite ecosystem. For me, as an Xbox player, PlayStation, for example, has yet to produce enough games _of my liking_ that I can't get on Xbox to justify buying one of their consoles. If I ain't buying a console's worth in games for a console, I'm not buying said console. No PlayStation generation has had more than two games that meet my aforementioned requirements, so why would I ever buy a PlayStation? For the same reason, I haven't bought any Nintendo consoles, either, and the only reason I have a PS2 and Nintendo DS, is because I got those for free.
