Nobody gets close to this version of this concerto. I heard it from many other pianists, but there is nothing to say: Martha is Martha. She is a master of the pedal and piano and virtuosic, with passion and emotion in her playing. THE SOUND IS SO POWERFUL AND EMOTIONAL WITH MARTHA. SHE ENCAPSULATES LISZT SOUL. And 19:34 what else left to say. Her tempo is always amazingly uncontrollable

This is absolutely wild - in a very good sense! So much individuality in her version of this wonderful concerto! It is an unforgivable and unfathomable missed opportunity from the Berlin Philharmonic Hall if they failed to make a recording of this performance. Thank you Herr Lemken for having the foresight of capturing this - and for sharing it!

Thank you so much for posting this. This concerto takes the power of Martha Argerich. The recording is fantastic. Sony DAT is a good system. I wanted a recording of her playing this. I play piano and know how difficult this concerto is; that is why you do not hear it often. I think Martha Argerich moved on to Prokofiev after this and that became her favorite. My mother was a concert pianist and she was the only one I ever heard play this, at Carnegie Hall, and received several standing ovations. She was a power player like Martha.

I once saw here play a two piano recital in tanglewood. By far, it was hands down, the most exciting performance I have attended. Due to the reverb, this sounds like it was miked from the hall, which would not surprise me. I remember, she had an enormous sound, so getting swallowed by an orchestra would simply not be an issue for her.

Her brilliant and inspirational outpouring on the piano of this wonderful music is not matched by the orchestra's rendition, which at times sounds hackneyed, IMHO producing a sentimental sound style more suited to Dvorák's music than the splendid and majestic music of Liszt.

Absolutely, Martha's recording is wonderful. But, if you like to compare performances (don't we all?), find the 60's recording by Richter, Kondrashin and the LSO. This recording was a founding member of my vinyl collection. All three elements were at their heights of power. Wish that I still had it. Sigh.😪

Liszt himself said that he found it very interesting when pianist played his second which is actually his first. He said its very difficult, he wrote it when he was young. And by old age, he ‘would have change diferent things

Well, not really: no. 1 dates from 1830-49 and no. 2 from 1839-61, so he was pretty 'old' when he finished with it ...

@@josephlaredo5272 it wasn't finished by 61... It was revised. I think for the same reason he was unsatisfied with it.

I enjoyed the rich orchestral palette and many fine lyrical moments, it's very "live" in all senses including some catch-up incidents for the orch. The downside is the rather heavy, soupy conception of the conductor, not always reactive enough to Mercurial Martha. I liked the realistic piano/orch balance mostly, altho with the distance, some solo passages got swamped. Bravo, all the same, for pretty good sound in this unique, (if we believe the description)- event. I wish she'd played Liszt2 more often!

Why did she not play this more often? She plays it so well.
@francis_19854 жыл бұрын
it is Martha. She played many things only a few times and never again. For example Mozart, I love how she played Mozart. But at one point she stopped playing it and these days she does not even play it anymore. I guess because she doesn't feel the composer or the piece, or she is not satisfied with the way she plays it?!?

I love her, she is pure fire. But the conducting in this version is really heavy. It's as if she is a lion inside a cage roaring and finding and exit. The orchestra is great but the conducting is truly detached from her.

+Salzburg I have never been fond of Argerich in the more intimate pieces of Chopin. Her recording of the 3 sonata and the e minor concerto, however, are for me definitive. She is wonderful in the 2nd movement of the e minor concerto.............

Hmm, maybe this is another Strauss Burlesque case where the maintenance time is a bit too high for Argerich’s liking? A shame. It’d have been great for her to have programmed this regularly. I imagine this is a last minute stand in performance. It’s a bit off from the typical technical perfection Argerich is known for, though it doesn’t affect the music a bit as far as I can tell.

She played it only once and it was right of her to do so... I don't think this heavy and overlaboured piece suits her... the First suits her much better! It was only at great insistence from Barenboim that she agreed to do this, as Strauss' Burlesque too. I remeber hearing Claudio Abado begging her for years to learn th Burlesque. So eventualy she did it only for him. And that was a great shame because the Burlesque is a wonderful concert-piece.
