Everybody saw that at the center pin & bushing replacement of the Big Bud and it's a miracle that he didn't lose his arm after the drawbar fell on him. You can use aluminium as a backing form when you weld mild steel , Jody from welding tips and tricks regularly uses it for heat dissipation also. ❤

Wasn't going to comment because enough people have already. .. . but, no, I need to add another post praising Kevin. He's the f-MAN!!!! I enjoy these videos sooo much!!!! I worked with a CPR welder, and we were working on a large scale steel sculpture, and he could perform magic with a torch. He learned everything working at the railroad, went to art college, then back to CP. No force to manipulate mangled train cars, just heat in many cases.

I find using an electromagnetic drill is perfect for drilling broken bolts as the angle doesn’t change as you apply more or less pressure to the job 👍 The fact that those bolts pushed through took all the fun out of it, such is life. Thankyou for sharing 😎

Watching the video, I appreciate how spoilt I've been over the years in Underground hard rock mining in Australia. We've always had access to mobile guys to come out linebore our worn machines. We clean up the drill rig/truck/loader etc and split them, and the contractor sets up his gear and works his magic. We whack in the new bushes and send it back to the rock-apes to smash it up again 🙂 I guess Vince is your 'contractor', great job 👍

I have had a 120mm spherical bearing that wore out its mount work for half a decade when I needed to fix the bore with Devcon and the emergency repair lasted for 5 years before we got a chance to replace the mount. Its pretty amazing how well steel putty can work sometimes.

Those tractors are worth their weight in gold. I did a season seeding in one in western Australia in 2008 the farmers had tried different brands over the years, (versatile, ford, j.d etc an nothing could beat the Stigers. They put the power to the ground so much more. The good ones can last 20,000 hours and the bad ones 18...

the hydraulic knock out tool for making holes in electrical boxes has a really nice pull cylinder that works great for pulling bushings I've done a lot of cam bearing that way.

Kevin, Rich, I've done barely any heavy equipment/ag repair but, did a lot of high precision spindle and gearbox building back in the day. So, the little tidbit of wisdom that I can share on projects like this is simple, keystock is your friend. On proper hardened bearings and bushings (any roller bearing and I suspect most of these bushings), we'd never use brass or aluminum punches, always keystock. It's a uniformly soft grade of steel so, it won't damage a hardened surface and as you use it, you can see any burr well before it gets ready to drop off into your bearing/gearbox. So, normally every month/week/day, you dress them up on a grinder to have a nice smooth face. My personal preference is toward oddball sizes of keystock. My go to is a piece that is 8mm thick by 12 or 14 wide and a foot long. That way, I can normally get the 8mm side into a tight spot, once a radius is ground on the end, it sits on a bearing lip rather well and the length just saves the back a bit. Obviously, in a tight spot, you might need to lop some off. I'd say 90% of the time in every shop like that I've been to, the bearings are sweat fit (freeze the shaft, warm the bore), from there methods differ. On new install, I've seen really nice press set ups and exacting shrink fits that let everything just fall into place. But, there always ends up being plenty of cases where something is getting hit with a hammer. Oh and if every you're in a bind because you do manage to get a bunch of dirt on a new bearing, according to an SKF rep, they recommend using Scott toilet paper to wipe them clean. Not sure the brand really matters but, I guess between the biodegradable fibers, small fiber size and relative purity, it'll break down with time in bearing grease and not damage the rollers.

Jim’s automotive machine channel welds inside a bearing race to remove it. As it cools it shrinks the OD and it falls out. Similar to the technic (?) of heating the race to expand it to red hot, then the cooled part is smaller at the end

For those bushing repair green locktite is great when you can't get it perfect, Also you can buy carbon slug or aluminium round for backing up, however overwelding and running a reamer with a mag drill is the best option

Great video. Takes me back. Those through bolts on the lower ball joint plate seem like a lot of trouble. When the heads inevitably get rubbed off from the bottom the plate can separate and then the whole thing disintegrates as you already experienced. I’d definitely keep an eye on those bolts or convert that to threaded hole like the back.

We had the bushing on one of the steering rams in the JD644 go like that lower pivot did on that case, it came apart and gouged the shit out of everything totally destroyed the cup, last year we just welded a decent used bushing in but this year we pulled the ram and are in the process of making a new end for it, need to weld some frame cracks too.

On the international dt series engines that I used to work on the oil goes to the filter last so you never need to prime them cuz it doesn't matter. Its after everything else.

I’ve always followed the instructions printed on the side of the filters as far as pre-filling them, some tell you to, some don’t, figured that’s the way to go. Will forever be a point of contention with some I’m sure lol. Good vid folks.

Case did their oil filters the same way. Upside down because it was only partial filtration. Oil filters were generally an option on Case tractors, like the VA. because the oil pressure was minimal. You were lucky to get 15 psi cold. Filtration was done through gravity. If you ever took apart one of those oil filters, it's just stacks of cotton discs. If you applied 40 psi to that construction, the oil would float in between the disks and not filter anyway. A filter housing was also an option with partial filtration. You wanted slightly higher pressure, you deleted the filter housing and changed the oil twice as frequently.

Pretty interesting. The only tractor we've ever split was our 6588 to replace the clutch; about three times or so. It seems like a big deal but since the 6588 is a 2+2, it's essentially a front with DT466B and axle hinged to a cab and axle from a 3688. But when we got our green Steiger, I think it was a Panther, thankfully nothing like that was needed. I don't think I'd be attempting something like that. Interesting to see how you folks went about it though! Always like seeing these old workhorses keep on working the fields.

On the age old oil filter argument, I was filling an oil filter up in the center hole and watched a small piece of the aluminum foil from the top drop in. If I wouldn't have caught it, that may have caused some serious issues if that made jt jnto a bearing. I figured the manuals that said don't prefill the filter were more worried about that kind of contamination and not necessarily the oil in the jug.

Now this is how a true farmer operates.They don't call the local dealer and have them send out a new tractor when something breaks they find a way to fix it at the time and then during the winter they bust ass trying to fix it properly if they have made enough money off the latest harvest, if not the temp fix lasts until something else breaks.

If you have a good magdrill you can use it to bore accurate holes in areas that you cannot fit a line borer. You can either fit the drill with a boring attachment instead of a chuck or use a high quality hole saw/drill.

you can back up a weld with copper sheet/pipe or brass as well. ferrous dont stick to non ferrous metal. also can use it as a heat sink behind thin car panel. i feel like i already said to much

FILTER WILL NOT COME LOOSE by doing this.On my Machines, especially if the fuel or oil FILTER tents to rattle loose, I put a HOSE CLAMP around it, so that the screw part can rest on a part of the engine (Or housing/something) which intern stops the filter from unwinding..... This is especially good because you don't to tighten crap out of it, which means it's easier to get off again....
