I would concur with the bent rod diagnosis. Had a friend ask me for help a few years back with a small Kubota excavator that went over on its side and as soon as it was upright they started it and went back to work but it was smoking a lot. As soon as they told me what happened I suggested they probably had a bent rod. Well their mechanic had already replaced the injectors, pump and even pulled the head to machine the valves but never looked to see if all the pistons were coming up to the same height on the deck. So we pulled the pan and measured the bottom of the skirt to the bottom of the cylinder on each one and sure enough two of the four were coming down lower in the bore.
@sHoRtBuSseR Жыл бұрын
I had one of these once came in with a miss. Took forever to figure it out because nobody said it'd been tipped over, but it ended up having low compression. Pulled the head and had one piston that didn't come up even with the deck. The oil in the cylinder didn't compress but the connecting rod sure did.

Love the videos. Keep in mind that engine is a backwards built cummins Case calls an Iveco. Cummins parts will fit mostly the same, but I am not sure about the oversized piston sets as the iveco has two sets in metric sizes. Experience from doing the same engine in the same machine from this winter. And also the injection pump is a tapered fit onto the gear, no woodruff key on the shaft.

Pull head, check piston protrusion...... some will run pretty good especially while warm or higher rpm. Slight bend in rod is my guess. The bend will often cause the bearing to have an angled oil clearance, this will cause bearing and journal contact and fast wear on one journal.

There is a small cover on the pump hiding the fuel pressure spring/spool. If you take the tamper proof cover off and take a punch. Mark it a 1/16 hammer down on the plugger. down on the relief. Will raise the pumps internal pressure. I work for case and had an old timer showed me that trick.

430s are good machines, only common issues I've hear are the fuel filter bracket cracking due to vibration and the hard plastic fuel lines getting tiny cracks and pulling air into the pump causing missfires. One at work has AC and it's ice cold, before the 430 we had a Thomas T133, also a good machine but the 430 runs circles around the Thomas.

I bought a 02 ford ranger 4 cylinder that the head was partially took apart on online so i found the original owner said it needed valves so removed the head and didnt see a thing wrong with valves. Cleaned head off and the rear combustion chamber looked sand blasted so looked at rear piston and it was just a fraction lower in the cylinder than the rest so it had a bent rod. Bought a newer wrecked truck for the engine and since it was newer i had to reuse the intake, fuel rail and injectors. Finally got it started and made a loud noise then had a missfire so checked compression and one was 20psi off. I guess a injector was stuck open and bent a rod in both engines. 😢😂

Apart from the diesel smoke there was oil smoke from the exhaust the whole time. Low compression on one cylinder identifies where it's coming from, likely scored liner and broken rings, and possibly bent rod, but could easily be all of the above. Running away on it's side is not a recipe for keeping an engine in good order...

If you have water in your fuel supply or tanks, an additive for it should be used on all the engines in the fleet. Considering that you run this machine all the time, but it was second hand, I would just assume that any second hand equipment has the sludge of doom in the fuel tank and water as well, especially farm equipment. Since it all is stored outside/in barns, some is filled with cans, and all of the engines are old/rebuilt I would just assume that the fuel can get compromised in every piece of equipment. Just run the additive in all of them and lower your equipment downtime. You will also lower the money and time spent on fixing equipment because of fuel quality issues. Yes, your per hour cost for running the equipment will go up potentially, but in the long run you will save money since less stuff will break. Not full applicable to this situation since this engine got flipped, but the flip might not have caused any problems had all of those tanks of fuel that had been run through the skid steer had the additive that addressed this contaminant and others. Long term dilution, basically, of what sludge was in the tank.

Pretty cool seeing a 4BT Cummins in a skid steer. Maybe the first piston in the injector pump is receiving the bad fuel first and acting as a sacrificial (filter) piston for the rest of the pump and sending out the initial bad fuel to the first injector and that is the reason for your first injector failing every time?
@mathewtodd480 Жыл бұрын

The problem with these FPT engines are the injection pumps. There is a electronic valve on the side which is for timing advance, these need to be removed and put a normal spring and plate in by a diesel service. The injectors got stuck because the roller plate in the injector pump wears out and metal shavings get the needle stuck. Ive encountered these problems dozends of times. Kind regards from the Netherlands.
