Being married to a pulmonary and critical care Dr., the bit about gaslighting is so incredibly true. We've even had family members who have stopped speaking to us because they are so invested in the minimizing of the pandemic. And that's without us even really challenging them on it or anything. It's been a really awful aspect of the past two years to have to defend yourself on top of the already awful realities of trying to fight this pandemic.

Real talk: what’s your opinion on the rules about family? Because my sister died in January 2021 of cancer and my family had to literally beg and cry to even allow one of us in while my baby sister had hours to live. Probably the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to me. As a current medical student I hate the rules about visitors. Sure we need to to stop the spread of covid but we can’t forget the human side. We shouldn’t allow patients to spend their final moments alone. I’m still bitter about things as you can tell.

Good luck! Be sure to stop by your local ICU, they’ll probably hire you on the spot! 😁 But seriously, good luck and congratulations. Best advice I can give is make friends with all your pharmacists. They’ll save your ass time and time again. More times than you’ll ever even know.

I watched this after being woken up to discuss a mental health situation (involving a youth who should have been in bed hours ago!), order the placement, then type up the paperwork. Now trying to figure out how to go back to sleep. I was feeling pretty sorry for myself, but now I'm just glad I'm not a critical care doctor. As a correctional psychologist, I think we have a great deal in common, but at least I usually get to sleep at night and I'm not still at work. And the inmates are our clients, not our colleagues. Thanks for helping me remember that things could always be worse!

I remember when my sister told me she was going to do a Pulmonary fellowship with a focus on critical care. I just looked at her like, "Did none of what's going on scare you out of it?" But hats off to every single Critical Care doctor, nurse, techs, maintenance, basically anyone who has to keep the ICU running. Shame how people are trying to downplay the pandemic right now.

@@smashmusique Unfortunately the reality is youre in a lucky position if youre able to ignore it just like that as most of us spending time in hospitals damn near 24/7 are exposed to these kinds of people and their diseases all the damn time and often they are not just bullheaded and ignorant about the pandemic but also medical treatments in general, and often will not follow treatment plans then get mad and blame staff that their condition is regressing. Often these opinions are formed out of how they feel about said treatments or whatever bullsh*t they happened to scroll by on their favourite news feed and not at all objective reality; and worst of all no matter how much you talk with and try to talk some sense into them like grown adults they regress in evolution and simply refuse to acknowledge anything you have to say that does not align with what they decided is their truth.

Is there anything that a Jonathan cannot do? When I was at uni, given how good the department's maintenance team was at keeping ancient machinery, equipment and building systems running on a shoestring (or just fabricating a replacement), I would not be entirely alarmed at the idea of such people taking on an highly technical role. (Seriously, if you can construct a pulsed field electrophoresis system, not from specs but from a post-grad waving their hands around a lot, you have some skills, and can probably be taught to shove a tube down a trachea.)
@ericwolf96642 жыл бұрын
The "techs" that calibrate and keep the MRI running has as much schooling as the doctors ordering the scans themselves. The literally don't even start scratching the math to do all of that until their masters because it's so deep down the rabbit hole.

I actually started studying medicine while I was in a rather dark place (I kind of felt I should just expend myself helping others, because I wasn't worth anything and should at least be used up in a way helpful to others). Wanted to become a surgeon. Luckily, I discovered my enjoyment of microscopy during university and - after a brief stint in pathology - decided to become a medical microbiologist instead. All those pretty colours in the microscope and on the agar plates... and much better hours.

Good luck to you! It’s a little self-serving, but also a real observation, don’t rule out other medical disciplines while you’re learning. For example, I have personally seen many pharmacy students who were premed but realized that being a physician wasn’t truly what they wanted or a good fit. There’s so much variety in healthcare careers, so try to learn as much as you can from everyone you meet. You may find another, more fulfilling calling that might not have as much publicity, but fits you better. Fingers crossed for you as you start your studies! 😊 It’s an incredible field, and
