To people who aren't sure about first gear or second gear : First gear is ONLY necessary to get you moving from stand still. It doesn't do anything, doesn't provide much acceleration, it is only there to get your wheels turning. So if you are moving in any capacity, use second gear.

@ChrisAndCats

The other video driving school lady has told a few learners to drop from second and go round narrower junction corners in first, which surprised me somewhat. If I did that in my little van, it would lurch to almost a crawl and the engine would harrumph & complain about it in the process. First in my van is absolutely only for pulling off, as the first commenter says. He (van) also doesn't like if you pull off in first but then have to briefly ease off mid-accelerate then go again without fully stopping. That makes him jerk when you accelerate again.
@fedebsas6531
@fedebsas6531 Жыл бұрын
First gear is also used for climbing up as it's the strongest gear. If you are on an underground parking you probably should go up in first gear. ALSO first gear can be used to slow down / brake the engine in the oposite way, instead of pressing the breaks and making them heating up you could use second or first gear on a descending slope since it slow down the engine without pressing the breaks.

I think one thing that could help her is minding her posture. Actually lining her back up with the back of the seat. With how much she is leaning forward towards the steering wheel she is less likely to look further ahead whilst driving and having your shoulders anchored in the seat will avoid swerving even when you look another way or do a shoulder check. This will also give you more control over the pedals because your movements will be less stiff when you don't have to worry about keeping your back off of the back from the seat.

What a lot of motorists don't realize is SatNav is an aid, it's not a life-support machine. You don't need to follow it down to the letter when you are driving or even on your driving test. Focus on the road, and take their guidance into account as you're driving. If you miss a turn, don't worry, the SatNav will sort that out for you computing a new route, that's why they are there! It's much better to be a couple of minutes late than to follow the directions closely and rear end someone or jump from the motorway to the exit ramp at the last minute (or vice-versa)!

A very insightful mock test! One thing that stood for me was when Pin marked dry steering as a minor fault, which I find to be a point of contention, since some instructors wouldn't mark it at all and some would. A video from Richard (Conquer Driving), where he demonstrates dry steering and how it affects the tyres etc. I can see why Pin wouldn't recommend dry steering, but in some situations it's actually worth dry steering first rather than steering whilst moving, like during various parking maneuvres etc.

They say when it's safe to do so and usually ask when it is safe to do so...like on a straight uneventful road. I drive and practise in like five different cars. The main things to do in a new care are two: (1) Bite point position. Find the bite point position, and REMEMBER THE POSITION OF YOUR LEG when you reach it. (2) - Distance judging. Reverse close to a curb. Look at your aide mirror. memorise how deep the curb is into your car. Do this for other distance problems too (such as how deep the curb to your left is into your windscreen when ur parked) Once you got these things down, picking up a different car is no problem at all.

Don't give up! I failed my theory test first time because I had one mistake too many (46/50) but passed the second time. I then failed my practical driving test first time because the driving instructor didn't want me to pass. He made me drive longer, go on routes with lots of hills and bridges during rush hour and asked me to reverse park on the left on a hill in a busy street (I lived in the Netherlands then so he should have asked me to park on the right) so I failed to do the hillstart twice during that test. He then said I had no control over the car and didn't keep a safe distance from the other road users. I failed my second test because I was just entering the roundabout but someone on my right went right before me so the examinor had to press the brakes. I then moved to the UK and didn't have a job for 2 years because I had to babysit my nieces and nephew regularly as I was living with them. I started working and saving money in 2020 but because of Covid I couldn't get an instructor or exam. I got one in Nov 2021 but got covid a few days before so had to cancel. I then booked another one for April 2022 but couldn't find an instructor in time so had to reschedule for Oct 2022. I found an instructor last minute and only had 5 lessons spread over 2 months but managed to pass with just 5 minor faults the day after I turned 23. Not everyone is fortunate to succeed first time but don't give up. I also switched from manual to automatic when I moved to the UK so I had time to keep an eye on the narrow roads and get used to the double/triple roundabouts. It took me 5 years but I got there in the end and you will too!

Having it down like that can cause an accident, it can get tangled up and instead of the clutch being under your foot it can get over instead or hit it with your toe. 10:23 she seems to do a series of down changes but instead of braking first to reduce road speed for next gear she depresses clutch and changes first. At 70 mph changing down would show up very badly.

It’s kindness to the vehicle too but have found new drivers tend to just break now without going through 3rd and 2nd and slowing down with a bit more decorum.
@keith6400

@@stevemccann4166 This lady bid a 4 to 3 change without any prior braking. Then minimal braking between each gear change. Often learners are in 30 or 20 mph zone continuously. The poor use clutch first with no braking on a down change gear sequence does not show up as badly as in 30 mph zones as it would from a 70 mph in 5th gear scenario. No end of times learners approach traffic lights and go for 1st without sufficient prior braking. This could throw the examiner forward in his//her seat when the clutch comes up and the engine cannot speed up quick enough to match the speed of the wheels at as low as 20mph.

Whilst at a random stop why does nearly everyone always put down the handbrake instead of just holding down the breaks for a few seconds ?

As French, I love watching these videos because it's interresting to discover how others country drive. I have my driving license since 6 years now and I'm able to drive everywhere and I have already driven in the UK. It was very stressfull at the first time because we don"t drive at the same place but it was quite cool.

I find the signaling at a roundabout interesting. I see that in the UK it's mandatory to signal that you're entering, the same in my home country. But where I got my license, it's actually a minor fault to signal when you enter the roundabout because you only signal when you exit. When I asked why that was, I was told that the logic behind it is "well, if you approach a roundabout, it's obvious that you're going to enter it so why should you signal that?"
@TheLiquidCat
@TheLiquidCat Жыл бұрын
That's a strange rule? Obviously you're entering the roundabout but you're signalling to tell other drivers what exit you intend to take so everyone is prepared (as you know 😊).
@floraflowers
@floraflowers Жыл бұрын
@TheLiquidCat Signaling at exit is mandatory but signaling at entering isn't. Obviously you have to signal before you exit so the other drivers know which way you're taking, but signaling upon entering isn't mandatory and actually considered a minor fault because, well, the driver inside the roundabout has absolute priority anyway so you're not even relevant to him and the driver behind you also sees a roundabout is ahead so he knows you'll enter it.

The mistakes that she made is a pretty typical thing for beginner drivers. She was a bit nervous and anxious. Looking at the locations she drove in, the streets seemed very narrow. Barely room to drive past other oncoming cars and the curb. I honestly thought she was going to hit the curb and the guy that was walking on the side walk. I dont think she did too badly but she definitely needs practice. Wish her all the luck in the world
