As an autistic daughter myself, I can relate to this on another level. I am now 15 years old and I'm not allowed to cook, only bake. I'm definitely not allowed to touch the knife, I still have parental controls on my devices even though I was supposed to be able to decide whether I wanted to manage my own account or not on my 13th birthday. My mom packs my lunch, definitely invades my privacy and also talks about my autism in a way that gives me insecurities just like the part in the video where Lauren's mom tried to tell her why she can't have a boyfriend. Honestly, I almost teared up watching this because it's the most relatable thing I've ever seen in my life. This video is just so heartwarming. I also just feel like my mom doesn't trust me. She doesn't even let me go outside by myself unless I have to walk home from my coding class and she only allows that because my little brother walks with me + she makes me text her to assure her that I am ok. Honestly, even though this is just a story, I'm so glad that everything turned out well for Lauren because I don't know if it will be the same for me. Me and my mom had a talk today and she is definitely ok with me going to college once I graduate hs but I feel like she wants me to stay near home and start with community college before transferring. She said that I would need to stay and "grow up more" because I can't do my laundry, I can't cook and I am terrible at cleaning (I wonder why). Also, I would need a job which is a big change. At this point, this video just reminds me of my mom and I'm scared that she might stalk me like that too. Honestly, I don't know anything anymore. If you're not autistic then pls don't judge us. I feel overwhelmed constantly because of having to worry about not only what my mom would say but what other people would think. We are aware of our condition because we hear a lot from our parents. I know this is messy but If you actually read up to here, then thank you for reading my tedtalk.

I can totally relate. Although I was never diagnosed with ASD, I have eccentricities and obsessions. I always felt like my whole life was a perpetual adolescent in the eyes of my family. On one hand, they treated me like a handicap; yet, they had high expectations for me. They wanted me to have the trappings of adulthood but felt that I wasn't ready for certain milestones, e.g., getting married and having a child (but I did all of that very much to their chagrin). They were total control freaks which pissed me off. Many times, I stopped talking to them. They couldn't understand why I needed validation. If they wondered why, all they had to do was look in the mirror.

I'm autistic myself and in the past I've had issues with the way Dhar Mann has portrayed autism in the past. Far too often he would rely on stereotypes, portray the characters in perfect at everything, or it would come off as tasteless like the case of recreating the incident of Myka and James Stauffer rehoming an autistic orphan. Yeah, still haven't forgotten that one. But this video though. Oh boy this video. I really have to speak my mind on this one. This video was really good. I really got behind this story and I really appreciate how Lauren was portrayed here. I found her struggles very relatable to the first time I moved out of home, when others would tell us it was a bad idea. And my god the emotion with the scene of her Dad really tugged at the heartstrings. The autistic elements wasn't perfect, like that line "I'm more than just my autism". But at the very least it's showing how much Dhar Mann has improved since he first started doing these videos.

I'm 23 years old, and my mom never got this overprotective when she found out I had autism when I was a baby. She didn't do parental controls on any of my devices, nor did she ever do the whole gps tracker thing. She, thankfully trusts me to limit myself on my phone, which is why I set timers on my apps. and when the timer is up, it's up. To anyone who has been treated like this, I am so sorry. Here's something that might make you all feel better: Psalm 94:18-When I said, my foot is slipping, your love, Lord, supported me.

I can’t believe her mom controlled her life like that. I have autism too my mom never did anything like she did to Lauren. I bet she was the one that found away to reject her from the art college. I can’t believe she talked to Bradley and told him and Lauren to go their separate ways. All because of Autism?! I have autism and everyone treats me the same way as they do everyone else. So yeah Lauren is like everyone else we all are. Disability or not we are like everyone else everyone of us. If her mom was that upset about Lauren leaving her after her father died because she felt like she was going to be alone why didn’t she tell her that before? You should always talk with your kids if you feel that way but don’t keep them back from their dreams. Kids will always visit their parents and never be gone forever when they leave. At least they were able to talk and forgive each other.

Even the number ‘18’ itself screams responsibilities. The reason why Lauren was so disorganised in the first place was all her mums fault for not letting her do anything. Just because someone is autistic, doesn’t mean they should take any less responsibilities. This is literally how narcissistic moms be, just straight up demons, don't wanna see anyone else happy and just care about nothing but dragging others into darkness with them. I may not relate to having autism but ik what it's like growing up with a controlling mom(especially when they take advantage of their disabled children) I can go on and on but this video is merely scratching the surface, super relatable.
@juliebrickley25624 ай бұрын
It's bad enough to be unlucky enough to date a controlling partner , & worse still if it happens to be one of your family members. Unfortunately, even your family members can be controlling, Isolate you, Treat you like a child, Doesn't let you have any freedom & independence, Controls the purse strings, I've got some of my own to add , Yep, Controls who you associate with, & the kind of people to associate with, Controls your hobbies, (eg sketching, like, dictate what kind of people you have in your artwork), Controls what you buy, (e.g. your family member or partner gets mad when you buy , say a 100th pair of shoes for example), Checks your phone or emails, Tells you what to eat, wear, & when to eat, wear, bathe, & sleep, & wake up, With a toxic family member/partner , you're way better off without them. All they do is make you miserable, & drag you down in to their toxic little world. That's what Lauren's mom did to her in that storyline.

As someone with autism, my mom fully supports me and my dreams. She doesnt baby me but she also is understanding of my needs. She also recently got diagnosed with autism so i think thats part of it. But it pains me to see that some parents are like this. Disabilities make things tough sure, but that doesnt mean anyone with them are helpless. Theres aton of people who have done great things even while they have disabilities! For anyone who is struggling with parents like this, or just struggling with their disabilities in general; your doing great. I don’t think I’ve seen a more relatable Dhar Mann video. My name is Olivia, I’m Autistic, I just graduated this year, I have never had a job before, never dated, although.. my mom and dad want me to go back to high school for an extra year instead of college. They think I have so much more to learn. I am dreading going back because my one friend that I had at school got in a fight and she was 2 years behind me. So she’s going to be there. I sobbed yesterday because I just cannot see her or talk to her again… but I really don’t wanna disappoint my parents. I’m stuck between 2 predicaments… and school starts in like a week.. I’m so panicked, I can’t make up my mind, they say it’s fine if I don’t go back, but when they told me that, they sounded very angry/disappointed. I don’t know what to do. I just can’t go back… Any advice please?..
