I'm a 69- year- old female. I went hi fat low carb after reading good calories bad calories in 2010. In 2 days I had what they call Atkins Euphoria. I hadn't felt that kind of energy since I was a kid. So much energy because never in my life, since childhood, had I ever gone a single day w/o eating quite a lot of carbs. In 6 to 9 months with zero exercise I (then age 55) went from 168 to 142, which was my marriage weight. I've stayed at my marriage weight now for fourteen years. Ditto my husband. To my surprise he picked up the book and read the whole thing and we eat the same. He got down to his marriage weight too. He said something that I also had been thinking which is that unless people read all of good calories bad calories he didn't think they would have the motivation and understanding to do what we did.

My blood pressure are better then ever, even though I still am taking Blood pressure meds. My formula is simple, Don't eat the sugar/carbs and I won't need the insulin. Example meal: Chicken breast and Salad with avocado, cucumber, blueberries and home made vinegar and oil dressing. I also skip breakfast. and try and eat 6/18, so I get an 18 hour fast every day.

Alcohol causes fatty liver witch won't help. If you do drink hard alcohol is better for your blood sugars then beer or sugary mixed drinks. Test your blood sugars one hour after drinking to see how high your spike. If your going over 140 blood glucose, your spiking and damaging your body. Its best not to drink, but if you do Avoid sugars and carbs just like any other meal.

Recently diagnosed, early 60's. It seems to be a tremendous amount of work just to eat and balance everything out. (6'2, 220 ponds) I have recategorized food and treat it strictly as medication. I have cut out all restaurants with family and friends. My wife will text me when coffee is being served and then I come into the restaurant and join the group. I am really not the type of person who looks for substitutions of foods. For example, nutritionist says instead of bread have this or instead of that have this. I asked for a list of things I shouldn't have and just cut it out, no substitutions required. The only thing I eat is grilled chicken and salad with vinegar and oil for lunch and dinner every day since I have been diagnosed. It has been a lot less work, and it has actually been working out pretty well. I look at food as if I am taking some type of statin, nothing more, and don't give it a second thought. I am in awe of folks who can go do all the measuring and preparation of different foods, and going to restaurants and creating plates they can eat safely. Granted, I am only 7 months into the disease, but wow, what a lifestyle change. Be well, everyone, thanks

The second is that as I recognize you're just months along, I also can't help but notice that your approach vector seems to be sort of a compartmentalized fear. There are tons of things you can enjoy while still maintaining course, and not joining the community of a meal, I hope, is only a temporary thing. For example I met three friends at a tavern yesterday, opted out of drinking (to their surprise, lol) as there was only high-carb stuff, and still was able to get a half-pound of brisket and some pickles. Not only was I not triggered by all the cheese bread and sweet sauces on the table, I left feeling empowered - and glad to just sit and chat with people as they enjoyed their grub. Anyway - peace and continued success to ya.

An excellent interview that captures quite a bit of Gary's book, which I thought went into too much detail about various research studies/writings about the treatment of diabetes over time. A plus of this interview was it covered more of how an individual could treat diabetes through diet. To me (not a medical type), it seems obvious that a good way to reduce blood glucose is to simply take in less of the foods that raise sugar, apparently not what became conventional wisdom. I hope Gary writes more general interest articles on diabetes and its treatments (and role of diet) similar to his "Case Against Sugar," along with future books that emphasize role of diet in health.

The government diabetes questionnaire still bang constantly, on the same question "family diabetes". As in the implication it's "genetic". Nowadays I know that's sheer stupidity! I changed to intermittent fasting and carnivore. Lo & behold diabetes no more! They don't seem to consider that it's not a family "thing" in terms of genetics. It's a family "thing" in terms of learned feeding habits! You learn those bad habits with your mother and your grandmother... etc. That's the family connection. If it was genetic it wouldn't radically change just because of a diet alteration. ;-) With that said I saw my mother and grandmother suffer, a lot. No doctor ever told any of them to change diet! Nowadays just thinking about it is shocking! We all continued eating bread, rice, cereals, sugars, chocolates... you name it! 😞

Just lower carbs, is that simple. There have been studies where participants fasted for 2 days and diabetes was "gone". It's so obvious if you consume more carbs then the system can handle, consistently for prolonged period diabetes will emerge. Excersice can help, because muscles can help with glucose, fat tissue will do its best by converting glucose to adipose tissue but there is only so much the system can do. Offcourse cells become insulin insensitive, they are unable to cope with more glucose, storage is full. Reduce carbs within the daily dieet and bam.
Thank you both for this life saving information! 🙂

Diabetes was "rare" in the 19th century because it was diagnosed primarily from urinary symptoms. The blood glucose test did not exist then. The result is that only the most severe diabetics -- usually with blood sugar levels well above 200 mg per dL -- got the diagnosis. Today diabetes is diagnosed with a fasting blood sugar of 126 mg per dL, where no urinary symptoms are present.

Likely there is a huge placebo effect generated by these stories that causes (temporary) weight loss in keto. I am so sick of the keto miracle weight loss trope. It's a fish story. Endless repetition & still no one loses weight statistically. Better to invest in the real etiology of obesity. Currently, I like Guyinet's idea that 50% have the obesity gene & the food rich environment does us in. Beyond that, the lipostat will keep folks from losing weight. & There is still much unknown. So, going by this logic given that carbohydrates are toxic and diabetics should avoid the use or increase in insulin, instead avoid this carbohydrate toxin ... This logic applied to people with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency - lacking the pancreatic digestive enzyme lipase, what, should avoid all saturated fat rich foods because it's not an essential fatty acid, some may argue is a toxin, & has detrimental health effects if lipase is not added /increased in the diet. See the poor logic when you reduce it in terms of macronutrients and exclude the totality of all nutritional factors of whole foods on overall health?

It may help initially if there is a lot weight to lose but all weight returns once you stop taking it. There is no quick fix in this question unless you change your lifestyle. It is essential to invest more time on your health and get educated on nutrition and how it can contribute to your healing process. Intermittent fasting can be a very potent tool on your journey.

I am vegan. I eat only Whole Foods, primarily of which are organic. I don't eat sugar or desserts. I exercise moderately. I have a BMI of 32, so I am slightly obese. It's so frustrating. It's in my genetic code. Also, I gained 60 pounds when I started taking Lexapro 10 years ago. I am now prediabetic. I can't believe it. I have since lost about 15 to 18 pounds, because I started eating my main meal in the afternoon. We are night owls, so we were eating our main meal at or close to midnight! I am a photographer and stay up late editing photos. I never snack. I eat only twice a day. I only drink water. I'm thinking the Lexapro helps with depression/anxiety, but it screws up other things. But it could, also, be the late night situation that's messing me up.

Go carnivore, your vegan diet is why you are sick!

Lifting weights will build lean muscle mass and that will increase your basic Metabolic rate. Focus on how clothes fit rather than monitoring your body weight.

Eat meat and veg. More protein and lift some weights to build muscle to help with the carb
