This is such an important video. Diabetes can remain “hidden” through people not bothering to have their sugar levels measured. Today sugar tests are straightforward and no one should refuse to have a test, or, more frequently, by just forgetting. People whose health is so good they never see a doctor should be aware of the risks inherent in developing diabetes, particularly as one gets older. An excellent video on an important topic. Many thanks!

Great vid, thank you. Been doing the pre-diab battle for like a year or two now. Lifestyle/diet change for sure is a great option versus going straight to meds. Had blood work early this week, and still have some work to do but numbers in general came down. Realized that the morning habit of eating sugar cereal (frosted flakes, cocoa pebbles etc) was abandoned without me really realizing it, sometime ago! Salads, fruits, protein have been my friends lately and it shows - in the blood work. Just waiting for the pool to open up so I can enjoy that activity again. For those out there dealing with this, good luck & keep at it. 👍

My wife was diagnosed T1 at 10 yrs old, so in the era of pork and beef insulin and urine testing. She is now 40+ years on after diagnosis and her A1C results are regularly in the 6-7 range. Her control is so good that our son was delivered full term naturally. Her OB Dr. Lorna Grant used my wife's experience as a teachable example for her students. As a side note, a video on the benefit of CGM diabetic devices would be helpful.

22 months ago, my mother finally had a follow up appointment with her physician which was delayed for months because her doctor has been in charge of treating Covid patients in the hospital and in nursing homes and was not able to meet with her. She had a full blood panel taken for this visit and her doctor was astounded at the progress she had made during the prior year. She was no longer diabetic and she was instructed to stop taking insulin after she had been on it for twelve years. Her doctor also praised her kidney function which has never looked better. Also, she couldn't believe that her total cholesterol was only 139, with LDL of 67, HDL of 60, and triglycerides of 82 which is great. According to the Framingham Heart Study, these numbers mean that she is virtually "heart attack proof" as many plant based doctors have noted. Her physician mentioned that she is reconsidering the diet for her family based on this experience. She also asked my mom to share her experience with our community after the pandemic. All of these results are exactly what I had hoped would occur. Here is the menu that I had developed for her to try to mimic what she was used to eating -- just search for GSP mother's menu -- While this menu is not a pure whole foods plant based diet, it appears to be health promoting enough to work for her. More recently, she has begun to taper off the processed transition foods.

Do comments have to be approved or take a while a load? My comment is now gone so I’ll try again. I’m 55 yrs old diagnosed type 2 in Nov 2021..first bloodwork in 20 years showed fasting glucose 155 and A1c 7.6. Asked my doctor to give me time to get my diet right and she agreed as long as I report my glucose readings to her in two weeks. I immediately went to American diabetes association and followed their dietary recommendations. After two weeks I could not keep readings normal and was very frustrated! After researching it myself I started a low carb diet replacing carbs with veggies except peas and corn which are too high in carbs and guess what? On my repeat bloodwork 3 months later my fasting glucose was 114 and A1c was 6.3 oh and my triglycerides went from 363 to 117!! I also lost 30 pounds. I finally realized that eggs would not raise my glucose but steel cut oats and whole grain certainly would!!! Type 2 does not have to be a progressive disease… fix your diet.. stop with low fat and whole grain crap and eat a proper human diet!! You do not need 3 meals and 2 snacks a day..

This is a great video and the timing is perfect. I was caught off guard last month when my doctor told me that I am pre diabetic. She said if my numbers don’t improve by July she will prescribe Metformin. She said I need to make a major change in order to accomplish this. I went through the pantry and tossed everything that has high sugar or hidden sugars. She also told me to watch a documentary on Netflix called “That Sugar Film” This film was a huge eye opener, I recommend it. I didn’t know that 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon of sugar. So, a regular size snicker bar has 27 grams of sugar which is around 7 teaspoons of sugar. It’s safe to say that me enjoying a snickers during a round of golf are over.

Very helpful video, as usual. And kudos to Dr. Grewal as a PCP, a critical and under-appreciated job. I am 77 years old and in excellent health. I exercise regularly and eat what until recently I understood to be a healthy diet: high fiber, low cholesterol, lots of fruit and vegetables. But I was recently stopped in my tracks by a KZbin video by a physician who was listing absolute no-no's for diabetics: bananas, grapes, raisins, melons, pineapples, and, to my astonishment, oatmeal. I eat oatmeal with banana and raisins every day! I will definitely make inquiries on my next annual checkup with my PCP. Thanks again for the video.

Hey Docs, love your videos. I too have to watch my sugar intake and after watching your video I'm reminded to continue my battle with sugar. It's frustrating that so many food companies add so much sugar to their products. I now mostly shop in the perimeter of the grocery store and a lot of what I eat is homemade so that I can control the amount of sugar, if any, that goes into it. On another note, do you have any plans to discuss tinitus? I was in a car accident more than 20 years ago and I've suffered from this ever since. Keep up the good work and keep on smiling!

There are some Type 2 Diabetics that inject insulin. As Dr Grewal explained, some of these patients start producing less insulin over time. But how does injecting insulin solve the issue of insulin resistance? It would seem that glucose would still not be able to enter the cells because of the insulin resistance.
@TalkingWithDocs

Hi Raul. This is why some people advocate different naming like adult onset or insulin dependent etc. it really depends on if the cause is insulin production or receptor sensitivity. It can be both as we age. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Great video, thanks. I was pre-diabetes four years ago and took all the advice on diet and weight loss, plus meds for hypertension. 90 kg to 74kg in 18 months, more exercise and life is so much better. Hopefully at 65 I have not left it too late. The root cause and systematic implications seem to be clear for Type 2. Are there root causes for the joint issues you discuss or are these inevitable with ageing? My joints all work well for running, cycling, kayaking and walking. Can arthritis and joint issues be prevented like diabetes? A video on what can I do to avoid meeting you docs professionally would be great. What can we do to put you two docs out of business and into early retirement? My doctorate is in business management and service, so reducing demand will work, can prevention achieve this or are you set for long term employment?

The best method to reverse insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes is the strict keto diet. The human body only burns sugar for fuel because most people have so much of it in the body. The human body does much better burning fat, therefore a diet high in good fats is a healthy diet.
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын
Hi Carl. We would tend to disagree but that’s ok. We agree that we should get rid of added sugar and processed foods but our bodies need carbohydrates. The keto diet is a great way to jump start weight loss but is not a sustainable or healthy way to eat long term. That is why it is a diet that has been rebranded countless times. It is obviously up to the individual though. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@carlking8530

@@TalkingWithDocs I disagree, science has proven that there are no essential carbohydrates for humans. There are 3 macro nutrients , fat, protein, and carbs, all carbs start converting to sugar in your mouth before you swallow. I encourage you to check out Dr. Ken Berry's KZbin channel. The keto way of eating is the proper human diet. Many doctors are educating themselves and learning that they were not properly educated on nutrition. Please do the research.

Hi Fred. Obviously a short video can’t address every question about diabetes and this would be best discussed with your family doctor. Below 7.8 is considered normal. 7.8-11 is considered pre diabetic. Greater than 11.1 is considered diabetic. And if you can get your sugar under control with diet abs exercise yes you maybe able to get off your meds. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

There are dozens of medications available to you that your doctor can tell you about. You seem to be doing well if your A1C is only 6.5 after two years off the metformin. It seems like you may have prediabetes. Are you testing your blood regularly? You may be able to manage your condition without drugs, by eating well and exercising regularly, but you do need to consult your doctor.

This is the first of your videos I have not liked. It is so very superficial, covering 'what everyone knows' and not stressing the really important parts enough, like hitting prediabetes with the same amount of urgency as you would, say, presurgical weight loss for knee patients. Had my doctor stressed the importance of that 'prediabetic' finding more, I might not be on insulin now, for example. Hoping I find another more in depth from you folks.

Dr. Graywall, do you really want to help people, then you are not helping until you start diagnosing the problem and stop covering up the symptom. Why I torture myself by watching this channel I do not know. I am sure no doctor goes into medicine to hurt people but in fact this is by and large what you do. Doctors consistently treat the symptom and ignore the problem. News flash, diabetes is the result of a bad diet and a lack of exercise. However when you treat it as treatable condition you are an "enabler", the patient leaves with the assurance that all they have to do is learn the medications they must take for the rest of their lives. Oh yea you told them they should eat better and maybe they should exercise a little more. You ignore the fact that your message is falling on deaf ears. They leave and if they return, you will probably start them on medication and if they ask "how long will I have to take this" you say "for life", and why, because you have not tackled the root of the problem. What the patient does not know is that they just fallen into the medical trap, more an more visits to the doctor and more and more drugs prescribed and who are the beneficiaries, you know, the doctor and the drug companies but not the patient. What is the plight of the patient, more and more doctor visits, more and more drugs and more and more poor health. Is this why you went into the medical profession? If we do not get at the real problem of virtually the greater part of most disease "insulin resistance" we are doomed. Our military turns down 80% of potential recruits. This is a shame and a reflection on our health---excuse me, I meant sick care system. Did you ever wonder why you never got much or any education in nutrition? I will tell you why, because healthy people do not enter the sick care system and that would mean the poor drug companies would suffer, wouldn't that be so awful. Ask yourself, if you and the rest of the medical system were helping, then why are more and more people getting getting sicker than ever. I know this profession is your bread and butter but is this what you really really want for our society. I await your reply, you look and sound as a good person that really cares but have been misled.

Hi Richard. So just to be clear not all diabetes is caused by a bad diet. Do your research and be better rather just complaining about doctors. Medicine in Canada is not the business that it is in the US. Doctors here and there are motivated to help patients be healthy and get off their medication however patients often do not listen. And do not do the hard work. Look around Richard. 1 in 3 people are obese. That is not their doctors fault or big pharmas. Maybe start complaining about cable tv keeping them in their couch or complain about McDonald’s or Starbucks but back off the doctors. Maybe there are other channels that are better suited for you. This is designed to help people.

@@TalkingWithDocs So happy to have your reply, I agree that the blame for societies ill is not entirely the fault of doctors (sorry, I did not mean to dump all the blame on you). I like to say pointed things that inflame the passion in others and get the creative juices flowing (I'm bad that way). So don’t get me wrong, I like you and I can see by your wording that you feel passionate about your profession and you do what to see patients get well. However, I believe you have to agree that as a society we are getting sicker and sicker. Yes, I am aware that there are other causes such as your genes, family history, ethnic background, and other factors such as the environment and your health but I do believe that these other factors can be mitigated by a healthy diet. Further I also believe that the majority of illnesses today are the result of a poor or bad diet. Today a trip to the grocery store is akin to walking through a mine field, there are mines in almost every isle. Lest one be armed with sound knowledge, bad things are about to happen. Few are those that can read and understand a nutritional and ingredients label and know what they mean. Yes, lest ye be miss-lead, I am passionate about health but not only for myself but for all. I do the grocery shopping and if I see someone reading a product I will stop and ask if I may assist and then educate, (because I care). You may be wondering why I am this way; well, I have my reasons. From an early age I saw health problems around me and wanting to live a long and healthy life I acquired knowledge from every source I could including doctors. Heeding that advice, I did not smoke, I did not consume alcohol (OK a small one on rare occasions to be sociable), I ate my veggies, avoided salt (now I know that was a falsehood) and I was always active. I needed to be healthy for the passions in life such as SCUBA Diving, Aviation. At work I used my lunch break to do a 45-minute power walk, if I ate at all at lunch it would be a tuna sandwich (Omega3), yogurt and an apple (you know an apple a day keeps------). In aviation I had to submit (and proudly I did) to an annual checkup to validate my license (my insurance depended on it). Can you imagine my shock and dismay when I was told I must have a triple full CABG? That can not be, I did everything right, who do I blame, thus I took aim at my family doctor (whom I then called a quack). However, I now realize that he was also misled by those whom he relied on for his knowledge. This is my research revealed that the majority of doctor training is about disease diagnostics is about what drug should be used to treat the symptom of complaint. This lack of disease origin is not the doctor’s fault but I (and some patients assume) is what the patient has come to the doctor to find out and wish to eradicate and not just cover up. My big question is why do we subsidize harmful products (I am reluctant to call them foods) and ignore healthy foods. I have to pay a premium to eat healthy but those that eat unhealthily (with the assistance of the government) are a burden on the tax payers.) Makes no sense to me, what about you? (I know I am long winded but I am passionate.)

@@maryannm2299 I take it that you have a mutual relationship with your doctor in that you feel your doctor cares about you and you believe in your doctors advise and heed that advise. You seem to understand that good health is a lifelong endeavor. Does your doctor ask you about your lifestyle and you diet. Recently I learnt that all people do not react the same to the same diet but there are many things that are just plain good for you and some that are just plain bad and you would think (at least I would) that your doctor would know the difference, does yours?

Unfortunately, a very large part of the population do not want to face the fact that they have a health problem - whether it is obesity or some other self-inflicted affliction. I was once diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I listened to the doctor & have been eating more healthfully & lost a bunch of excess weight. I am no longer anywhere near being pre-diabetic. I have family members who have not done the same & are taking medications for various issues that are diet, & lack of exercise, related. My point is: the doctors can only do so much. If the patient does not make changes, then the doctor is forced to medicate. You can lead a horse to water....
