Diablo 1 is by far the darkest and most adult of the storylines. Diablo 2, comes a reasonable second but with much less claustrophobia. Diablo 1's genius was it's fixation on Tristram and the inescapable dread that emanated from the Cathedral, something the village NPC's were more than happy to testament to. As soon as the Diablo series became more geographically broad, it also watered down the atmosphere clearly present in Tristram. That village was cursed, and no other place in the lore ever came close. -"By Forgotten Gaming" -Can't agree more.
@gabrielhawk10 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I liked D2 but it really missed the primary concept of Diablo 1 (the fear, the agony, the claustrophobia, as you said). Well, but it was really fun, had more classes, more monsters, more skills, items etc, so it wasn't a bad game. And the story kind of kept me going. But Diablo 3 should not be named Diablo. I don't think the game is bad, but it don't come up with the reputation of a Diablo game. It should have been called a different name. I know some ppl don't agree with me, but something that would make a great Diablo sequel are the Souls games (Demon and Dark Souls 1 and 2). The atmosphere is amazing,it really resembles Diablo. Much more than the own Diablo 3 to be honest. Everything is gloomy, sad, depressing and hellish.

you're absolutely right. Diablo 3 retreated from the entire atmosphere of the original game. Visually, it's cartoonish the way WoW is and uses too much colored lighting. Mechanically, the gameplay feels more like a button masher. Musically, does Diablo 3 even have music? I couldn't hear it.

Agreed! I saw some posts about it recently in a game group I follow and got nostalgic so I fired up this video while making dinner. It's easy to 'remember the soundtrack' but I had totally forgotten how raw and utterly terrifying it was as you progressed. Nothing like the haunting yet dreamy soundscapes in the newer games. This shit is true horror music.

My Diablo series memories: - Losing too many hours in my best friend's basement while we played this cooperatively on the PlayStation(didn't even know it was a PC game then). It remains in my video game collection along with a few other select original PlayStation discs. - Beating Duriel from Act II of Diablo II. Fuck, was he ever tough. - Finding the Arreat Summit website and learning tons more Diablo II tips and tricks. - Beating Baal from Act V of Lord of Destruction. Fuck, he was tougher. - The anticipation of waiting for the Diablo 3 release. I didn't watch any videos, or read anything about it, I just heard it was coming and reminisced about the first two with a buddy. After Blizzard did such a fantastic job bringing back the StarCraft series, I knew it was going to be awesome. - Throwing out Diablo 3 after 8 hours of playing. That was truly a piece-of-shit game. It remains the only video/computer game I've actually tossed in the trash. I remember wanting to call Blizzard and tell them how embarrassed I was for them, that they would take the best(in my opinion) game series they'd ever produced and flush it so hard down the shitter. - Finding this soundtrack from the original game(16 years old now!) that I loved so much as a kid and being able to listen to it while I share these thoughts.

Diablo 3 completely disproves the statement "Third Time's the Charm". I wish they would have taken the concept of diablo 2 and made it even more demented than diablo 1 with even more gameplay tricks and fun but they just made a half-assed rehash of d2 and slapped a 3 on it.

I know nobody will read this but the ending to this soundtrack is even more depressing. I hear the snare Drums and flutes of army marching tired and hopeless. The way the flute begins with an uplift melody then slowly comes down as if the person was trying to convince himself and his army that they have a chance against the enemy but deep inside everyone knows they're going to die.
@Glavin883Күн бұрын
Matt Uelmen is insanely good at putting imagery & feeling through his compositions. I agree, the flute melody starts to pitch-shift down & it sounds like a soldiers drifting mind into madness. I always thought that it was an anthem or march of the hell knights before they were corrupted by diablo

Greetings good master! Welcome to the Tavern of the Rising Sun! Thank goodness you've returned! Much has changed since you lived here, my friend. All was peaceful until the dark riders came and destroyed our village. Many were cut down where they stood, and those who took up arms were slain or dragged away to become slaves - or worse. The church at the edge of town has been desecrated and is being used for dark rituals. The screams that echo in the night are inhuman, but some of our townsfolk may yet survive.

A huge reason why we don't feel the mysterious atmosphere in newer games... is the MUSIC! People don't come up with unique music anymore which suets the game perfectly. So to speak, they just put in some orchestra music which "might" be epic but in the end it sounds all the same. There is nothing new anymore. No music for games where you can say... Well, that sounds freakin' nice! I want to listen it again. Nowadays you hear and think.. Ok, not bad but... nothing special anway. And thats the point! Game developers: Stop making orchestra music!! Some games might need it, but for god sake not every game! It has no soul, it is nothing new, and everyone does the same. Think of good composers who can give the music a soul. A music which we can identify with the game. A music where we want to hang up in the menue screen, just to listen to it. It doesn't have to be liked be everyone, thats the wrong way.. Be experimental, try new things. We don't need mainstream music!

When I played Diablo 1, I was no stranger to RPG games. I entered the cathedral and thought that was just one small part of a wider world. Complete the quest there, get the reward, and go on to the next area... Perhaps there would be fields to explore, mountains to climb... But no. You just keep going deeper and deeper, down and down. Until you are literally in the darkest pits of hell. I'm not claustrophobic, but something about this game made me feel threatened. And that's what kept me coming back to it.

A masterpiece of writing and Music, at the TOP of the entire ART about gaming world productions. The claustrophobic and scaring game sensations were immense and only near to its high emotionally horror gothic atmosphere. The sounds, the weapons clash, the pain shouts, the parry, the chests, the voice of all "characters" and the acting of all "poems" you found as quests, all of those so wonderfully immersive. So terrifyng to walk around. All so nostalgic.. When games and almost ALL LIFESIDE of every : values arts creations writing and ideas also were BILLIONS TIME BETTER AND DEEPER than "today".

I have played both D1 and D2, although I started out with D1, but I spent way more time with D2...that said, years after, I'd regret spending so much time on D2 grinding out levels and items. TBH, I was addicted to both of them...the difference between the two was like addicting to exercise and cocaine, but I don't regret that I have played D1, because it was a good kind of addiction. As for nostalgia's sake, I"d agree that the feeling is there, but it doesn't interfere with my ability to judge games much. For example, I played both RE1 and RE2, but I find RE2 better than the first. No doubt there are many improvements with D2 over D1, but the story and the overall atmosphere of D1 is just too great...I'm sure it's memorable for most D1 player when they first encountered the Butcher or some other bosses in D1, but no bosses in D2 can give you the same kind of feeling, which IMO, is probably the hardest thing to create for an RPG.
@JamesR17016 жыл бұрын
I agree with you there. I started on D1 and loved the whole thing, story, gameplay, music............everything worked wonderfully, (even if by today's standards the gameplay is limited). Spent days on D1 and then moved onto D2 and equally loved it, days and days flowed by as I ground my way to being a demi-god. D3..........well it's ok, but doesn't have the same feel about it as the first two did. I think i still have my maxed out demi-god character files saved on an old zip drive, I may have to dig them out and take them for a spin.

I love how simple, yet brilliantly complex this game is. I didn't understand this when it came out when I was 6 years old. I rented it from a local Blockbuster to play on PlayStation 1 and thought "Meh." I wasn't into ARPGs at the time, nor did I have the patience to understand them (of course, because we're all young dumb kids at one point in our lives). Five years later, at 11, my family owned a cyber cafe and we picked up several Diablo 2 battle chests that came with Diablo 1. My friends would fight over the computers that had Diablo 2 installed in hopes of playing. One day I gave up my seat to let someone play Diablo 2 and decided to give Diablo 1 another try. I fell in love with the idea that the whole game is focused around Tristram. At first, it seems so shallow and lackluster until you delve into the cathedral and realize that you're in a massive dungeon that continues deeper and gets harder with every level you descend. After realizing this, I found Tristram to be an eerie place. You know it's cursed and the thought that right below your feet are demons of Hell and sprawling dungeons makes you feel like there's nowhere in the game that's safe. Fast forward to today at 28. I've played Diablo 2 and 3 so much. Diablo 2 is fantastic, as we all know. Diablo 3, meh - the gameplay was alright, but Diablo 3 never captured the kind of tone and chilling atmosphere and storytelling like Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 did. I decided to sit down a few weeks ago and delve back into Diablo 1 and OH MY GOD! This game gets better and better with age. It's incredible! And to think it was made with 15 people and only one programmer (the legendary David Brevik). It really goes to show what you can accomplish when you get behind a project you're passionate about! Anyway, less talking, more listening and back to programming of my own! Thanks for the memories, Blizzard North! We miss you!

One of the great things about this soundtrack is it's calmness and yet tense feeling all at once. It's a constant feeling of " They don't come at me right now, but in a few seconds - and that is also the feeling when playing the game. Sometimes less is more and in this game thats exactly what it is. You can ONLY wander through dungeons and you could ONLY walk and not run and both those things in addition to this great Soundtrack created this haunting, claustrophobic atmosphere that was so unique and great. Today everygame needs, Acts and Snowy lands, tropical lands, cliffs, Mountains, Dungeons and so forth, every game needs a Quadrillion different moves and combos - i think it is the minimalsm and the purity of Diablo 1, that makes it so uncomparable and so great.

@@TheDerpp I think that all the soundtracks of D1 are calm in a way. I understand that you might not understand what I mean, but I still feel the same way as 4 years ago. Sure, its not true for every part of every single track, but thats how I personally feel about it.

"Dungeon" and "Caves" are simply incredible. Unmatched. Perfectly evoke the sense of dread and horrible fights your hero needs to suffer through. Atmosphere and lore-wise, Diablo 1 is easily the best in the series. D3 is just mediocre in comparison - especially in terms of story. So cheesy and poorly written... D1&2 had such a different feel and tone.
@keesdevries948411 жыл бұрын
I think Diablo 2 was also way too flashy. I'd hoped that Diablo 3 would have been more true to D1, much darker, much grittier. A game in which you'd actually be happy if you got +1 to light radius. But alas. Blizzard has products to sell so they pander to the lowest common denominator. I can't even blame them.

***** I think it started with Warcraft 3, war3 has basically the same story structure as sc1 and the cartoony graphics

***** I believe that has to do with WC3 basicly being a singleplayer WoW in the begining.
@Krystamyth11 жыл бұрын
Boom Wagter Problem was WoW wasn't being made by Blizzard North, the original company, and when their game became a super success they just gave them the reins to everything, and the guys just have no real talent. Most of the music Uelman made for their version of D3 was shoved into Burning Crusade. They could have contracted Uelman (or anyone but the fail they hired for D3) to do the music but their ego wouldn't let them, and the game suffers as a result. Terrible writing, poor art choices. My demon hunter has a taunt "I've defeated LESSER foes!" I'm like~ did anyone read that out loud and realize that's actually a backhanded compliment? Not a taunt? No, of course not, because their writing is fucking garbage, and they're too full of EGO and sales money they don't deserve. Sales money that exists because of the work of better men and women and it makes me sick to my stomach that they think it has anything to do with them. I hope they all lose their jobs and starve to death for what they did to my favorite franchise. Yeah, that's pretty fucked up to say, but when Jay "Fuck that guy" Wilson insulted the lead designer of Diablo 2 on Facebook over an HONEST critique of the title, I could give three shits about Blizzard. I'm glad he got kicked off the team, but I hope he gets kicked off the mortal fucking coil, and learns what HELL actually looks like, since he apparently has no fucking clue.

I play this in Diablo 3, If ever Diablo 3 is offline, I will try make an overhaul mod to merge this with D3 change from monster voices, scene contrast to darker color tone, so at least D3 could follow a little bit of what "Diablo" is really all about

Any music that genuinely creeps you out or scares you is worthy of applause, it's 'though' to be emotionally moved these days. I really like the sounds at 8:06. In my mind I see a cult of cannibals having some sort of twisted celebration, wearing masks of human faces, drizzled with sweat and blood, they dance wildly around great bonfires - it's gotta be the fallen! Very cool. It reminds me of the Planet of the Apes Suite, you know... the better one from 1968 :). That tune always gives me creeps. If you listen closely, you can hear apes screaming pretty much throughout the whole thing.

Next to its sequel, one of the best soundtracks and nostalgia-memory-bringer ever. A shame that they forgot to do that on D3. Sound barely jumps out of the jukbox and you actually have to INCREASE music audio... A shame. This is what makes a game a game, not just mechanics. THE FUCKING SOUNDTRACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some memorable lines for me: "Ah! Fresh meat!" - the Butcher (level 2) "The warmth of life has entered my tomb. Prepare yourself, mortal, to serve my master for eternity! [evil laugh]" - King Leoric (level 3) "The smell of death surrounds me!" - Warrior when reaching level 5 "May the spirit of Arcaine protect me!" - when putting on Arcaine's Valor found on level 5 "I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration?" - after killing Zhar the Mad (level 8) "My blade seeks for your blood, mortal, and by my dark masters it shall not be denied!" - the Warlord of Blood (level 13) "Your madness ends here, betrayer!" - after killing Archbishop Lazarus (in his lair at level 15) And finally: "Yep, that's a cow, alright! - I'm not thirsty. - I'm no milkman." - when tapping the cows in town many times! :D
@mgerry199211 жыл бұрын
Oh and not to mention this one: "I can see what you see not, Vision milky then eyes rot. When you turn, they will be gone, Whispering their hidden song. Then you see what cannot be, Shadows move where light should be. Out of darkness, out of mind, Cast down into the Halls of the Blind." - Book of the Blind (the Halls of the Blind quest on level 7).

"I have no room" and "I can't use this... yet" should also be listend. I think there are more lines tho. Didn't he say something when he entered the Caves for the first time?
@mgerry199211 жыл бұрын
Yes, he does, and of course there are a lot more lines in the game that could have been written here, but I like these ones the most! :) Some lines depend on the character but mostly they're the same, e.g. Warrior never says "I have no room." but Rogue does. :) Warrior's lines for picking up items when inventory is full: "Too much baggage." "I can't carry any more." "I gotta pawn some of this stuff." Entering level 1 (Cathedral): "The sanctity of this place has been fouled!" Entering level 5 (Catacombs): "The smell of death surrounds me!" Entering level 9 (Caves): "It's hot down here!" Entering level 13 (Hell): "I must be getting close!" Oh, and I wanted to add this one to my very first comment but forgot it: "Your reign of pain has ended!" - after defeating the Warlord of Blood :)

Hmm... If my memory serves me correctly: "Pleeeaase... no hurt, no kill... keep alive and next time good bring to you." "Something for you I am making - again, not kill Gharbad. Live and give good. You take this as proof I keep word." "Nothing yet, almost done. Very powerful, very strong. Live! Live! No pain, and promise I keep!" "This too good for you, very powerful. You want - you take!" Warrior after killing Gharbad: "I'm not impressed!" :D ...Truly an amazing game! :)

I dont know why but the first blizzard games had amazing soundtracks and incredible stories. I'm now 26 but my childhood was forged with these games and I agree with some comments, the old games are really hard to beat. When I was a child I watched how my older brother played Starcraft I, Diablo I and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal and then I started to play too. There is a lot of nostalgia with those OST games for me. In short words... "Yep, that's a cow all right!"

Take heed and bear witness to the truths that lies herein, for they are the last legacy of the horadrim. There is a war that rages on even now, beyond the fields that we know, between the utopian kingdoms of the high heavens, and the chaotic pits of the burning hells. This war is known as the great conflict, and it has raged and burned longer than any of the stars in the sky. Angels, and demons, walks amongst huminaity, fighting in secret, away from the prying eyes of mortals, and neither side ever gains sway for long as the forces of light and darkness, constantly vie for control over all creation. My master has named the battle for this world and all who exists here.... the sin war!
