Great idea on making them defensive. How about giving Inferno a chance that the enemy will flee (who wouldn't with a stream of fire coming to your face) increasing by skill level, then give arctic blast a slow by % effect. They could become defensive abilities instead of the main damage dealer they never were, and would be in keeping with the fantasy of the skills

How I'd improve these skills: 1) As skill levels increase, more projectiles are added. Like Charged Bolt or Teeth. I'm torn on whether or not "shotgunning" should work with Inferno/Arctic Blast, but the ability to hit multiple targets in a wider area seems like a no-brainer. Gonna take a bit of inspiration from Diablo 3 here with the Wizard's skill "Disintegrate" with the "Entropy" rune applied to it. 2) Channeling Inferno for longer increases the damage done by the skill every second up to a cap of 5 seconds. +10% damage after 2 seconds, +20% after 3.5 seconds, +30% after 5 seconds, for example. I see this as a tradeoff for the skill's requirement that you be stationary. This would also apply with your proposed buffs to tankiness such as DR and uninterruptable. For Arctic Blast, rather than dealing more straight up damage, allow longer channeling of the skill to have an increasingly higher chance to completely freeze enemies rather than just slow them. 3) Apply a Holy Fire effect in a small radius around the Sorceress that kicks in after 5 seconds. For the Druid, since Hurricane is also Cold Damage, make that a second synergy for Arctic Blast. Considering Inferno has 2 synergies (I count Fire Mastery as a synergy), giving Arctic Blast a 2nd synergy seems fair in my opinion. 4) Provide damage bonuses to Druid Summons against enemies Frozen by Arctic Blast. (edit) I made this comment before watching the video, just for the purpose of seeing how similar our thoughts are.

I'm gonna enjoy this one. I play both sorc and druid, and never put any more than 1 point in either. If I can just point out 1 thing. Plurals don't use apostrophes :) Pros and cons. 18:02 well, the thing about skelly mages is, if they're THAT squishy, they better be dishing out insane damage to compensate, but they're just not. I really like the idea of giving these defensives, movement speed, fire underneath, multishot, faster missile speed, basically anything to make them not suck. If the game engine was a bit more advanced, I'd advocate for increased damage the closer you are, but I have no idea if there is a way of doing this in D2. 37:44 and the shamans in Act 3 have Inferno too. Maybe it could also increase the damage of AB and Inf but only as synergies with at least 2 higher level skills. That way, the enemies that use it wouldn't be straight up OP, but a sorc or druid that invests into the tree could get the benefits.

For fixing Inferno I like the idea of giving it a synergy with Blaze that increases projectile speed per point and giving it the mechanic that you can begin the channel faster depending on your current movement speed. If they really wanted to make it very interesting they could give it the ability to trigger on-attack effects and expand the pool of items that can do it.

Channeling bonuses like these are fun to grab in poe and the creator of that game admittedly obsessed over diablo 2 too. I still think I might prefer conserving options already available for players that place points into inferno though. Some ones I can think of are like adding in the use of fire wall/meteor since those both benefit from inferno and can be used differently. Or removing inferno as a melee option and using weapon strikes instead with firewall and meteor being automated via combat. I just think that stuff fits better with how the game was designed

Fun stuff ginger, I'd propose having the Inferno width scale with the length, and having the ground burnt underneath.. on top of the speed increased it could be very viable in choke points.

I've played full Inferno through Nightmare and loved it with just a Peace, Leaf with +9 Inferno, and +2 Sorc circlet. It definitely sucks, though, and in act 4 I found myself using a low level Frozen Orb to deal with the high fire resistance. I always thought that making the spell wider, sort of like the Burning Hands spell from Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, would fix a lot of the problems the spell has.

If we take a page out of D&D there is fire shield which encircles you with fire, so why not just setting yourself on fire when you cast inferno so anything that hits you in melee takes fire damage and same for arctic blast. Also in D&D you get breath weapons that come out as a cone instead of a line which would also be a great way to fix inferno and arctic blast everything inside the cone gets hit

To fix it, reduce range, increase cone size and add knock back. Potentially increase damage. The way AI uses it shreds us without resist though, I’m thinking act 4 demons, act 2 fetish shamans. I feel it doesn’t matter to have bad skills and better ones though.

After seeing this video I've decided to make a sorc who is built around standing there and being wailed on (Max energy Sheild etc). She's gonna be called the "reflect" sorc and imma stack tons of procs on being struck (Pride runeword comes to mind, as well as Rising Sun Amulet and max chilling armor) I was going to make her a strict pacifist, to just stand there and get wailed on, but now Im thinking Inferno is perfect for her... I don't think I'll have the runes to make a Pride for a long time...but if you think about it, Using Pride on an Inferno Sorc would kinda give you the "fire at your feet" type of effect that you described....kinda.

I would love not inferno but blaze to be changed. Instead of spreading fire after the sorc she leaves oil. The oil will do no damage but apply a movent speed de-buff on monsters along with extra flat damage from each individual tick of fire damage they receive for a few seconds. This would mean it's only a utility skill for hard hitting single damage instance skills like fireball but a great increase in damage for not only inferno but hydras as well as fire wall which would also benefit from the slow applied to the enemies. You can then do hit and run tactics and the buff would be attached to a different skill which the monsters don't use (or at least I don't remember them using).

They need to make it wider, but shorter, so you can engulf more monsters when they round you. Like 45 degree "cone" of area, but it ends on 1/3 of a screen. And that casting pose, like wtf, she has diarrhea?! And the dmg should stack, from 1 tick to like 10 ticks, so it makes sense to stay in 1 place and cast it for a long period of time and taking some hits before getting insane dmg. Also, interruptible, as you said, is a must. You only stop when you die! :D

What if inferno is changed instead into something like shiver armor, except it’s both defense and offense. When I hear inferno, I picture the character is engulfed in fire. Since it’s synergy is warmth, it means the player gets hotter with added points placed into warmth. Just like with enchant, the more warmth, the more damage since you’re increasing the heat of fire. Inferno will do a radial damage like holy fire but melee range. In addition, since the player is hot, it will also reduce defense and offense of melee range characters as it melts their armor and weapons. As a penalty, it will be like prayer, where it continuously drains your mana for it to be active

The idea I had to fix Arctic Blast was to make it work like the Frost Nova skill in Warcraft 3 does. How that could be done, I don't know. I don't really have a fix for Inferno to be honest. Some other functionality would be required. Had druids not gotten basically the same ability as diablo, I'd say that should be how Inferno works, but as it stands, I can't think of any way to make it work. Maybe it could be a blast of fire in a wide cone that you just cast and it has a cooldown like ice blast etc. Could also make both Arctic Blast and Inferno act the same way and it's just a triangular cone aoe that has a proper cast time and benefits from FCR, as well as not being a bunch of missiles and therefor being able to dish out damage at the faster casted rate. This also removes all the drawbacks of having to stand still and since it would be a new ability, it wouldn't get used by monsters. Considering the versions monsters get are actually dangerous, I'd say those don't need to be changed anyway.

My Fire Sorc is in early Act 1 Nightmare i plan on swapping her to ice Sorc once i hit act 4, I'm bouncing between D2R Dragon's Dogma and Fallout 3.

Inferno is so much worse than artic blast. For example the sorceress doesn't have minions to tank and the inferno doesn't slow monsters down. So for the sorceress you're relying on your merc to do all the tanking. Infeno's cost is way too high as well.

I agree, I think as a channeling skill it's mana cost is terrible. Makes it very difficult to use while leveling or at all unless you have optimal mana setup.

wasd movement seems to be liked. Would be interesting to see it in d2. Everything else reacts to what gets clicked by the mouse so could be hard to work out, don't know

Make it cast fireball aoe explosion instead of fire bolt. The only offset for standing still is awesome damage. The sorc has teleport so movement speed is near useless. For druid do the same, make the damage comparable to tornado.

Stacking buff, yeah I don't think any mechanic like that exists within Diablo II unfortunately which would make it impossible without adding new mechanics to the game.

My idea for inferno. Make it stationary fire tornado that has a "reverse knockback" effect and pulls monsters in a couple tiles My idea for arctic blast: change it to a cold shotgun effect like charged bolt with a knockback effect. Those two uniques that spawn with these as Oskills might be somewhat useful then.

The Heart of what I am trying to do is to "Fix" The Skills not entirely change them into something different or new. With the loving care of an Antique Restorator, or an Old Car Enthusiast that has to use OEM Parts. My goal is to fix the skill within the games existing mechanics, and Towards the skills Existing fantasy. As I have seen a lot of your comments, I get the feeling what you want to do is completely change the game and that is just not my purpose. Example: Fixing Skeleton Mages is fine Turning them into Skeleton Archers is not Fine. One is addressing a problem the other is getting rid of the problem and starting from scratch. Everything I do with this series approaches the fixes from within the mechanics of the game. Multi-Shot inferno already exists I am just proposing to let the Sorc have it too. Meteor fire floor pattern already exists I am just proposing adding it as a defensive mechanic while channeling. Uninterruptable already exists throughout the game. "Make it stationary fire tornado that has a "reverse knockback" effect and pulls monsters in a couple tiles" Is a completely new mechanic that does not exist within the game. You see the difference? To Use a Silly Analogy, Grandma may be old & Grandma may be slow but that doesn't mean we kill her and replace her with a cyborg grandma with jetpack boosters.

@@GGMentor i get it completely, i just dont think these skills even with your adjustments would be worth the effort. They have really bad feel and gameplay style to begin with. My idea is not totally new because tornado exists and charged bolt exist and knockback exists. It would require some new special effects to make them look like what i suggested though. Your idea involves the same level of development pretty much. Also, i didnt suggest skeleton archers. And i just want to share that i love your channel and suggestions on a lot of the changes, so hopefully you aren't reading my comments as if im being a snarky prick. I even did a reaction video to your charges recommendations about the scaling with level and thought it was brilliant. Thanks

What I am trying to get across is that Diablo II is always going to be a game people Fear Ruining by taking things to far. When something is nearly perfect it's very difficulty to make positive changes. More often than not what we consider positive can have negative repercussions. A Good Example is in Real life, with Yellowstone. In the older days people hunted Wolves to extinction in the area changing the natural balance of the area causing a trophic cascade through the entire ecosystem which resulted in Yellowstone becoming a barren wasteland basically. They thought they were doing the right thing, wolves were killing cattle, chickens, they are predators, and deadly. But in the end that decision did not ultimately prove to be the right one. When The Wolves were reintroduced Things Started to fix themselves, as it turned out they were a delicate and very important part of the ecosystem of the area. www.yellowstonepark.com/things-to-do/wildlife/wolf-reintroduction-changes-ecosystem/ The point I am trying to make is when you have a game so expertly made and so perfectly done like Diablo II you have to be very careful about the changes you make because they can unbalance everything and ultimately ruin things. I have spent decades learning and mastering Diablo II and even I am afraid of making changes that are too drastic. Because I to am on the side of afraid of ruining the game. So my suggestions are always going to be on the more cautious side, using mechanics that exist within the game. Which is often why in my videos you will see me show existing mechanics as proof that no harm would come from allowing X to happen be cause Y already does this.

@@GGMentor hey thanks for the response again. And yea i get it. Mosaic happened. Haha. And even though I dont like that item a lot of people do like it. I think that all of the weak spots of d2r or "lost sheep" as you call them have multiple solutions, and some would require bigger changes besides a slight number tweak. And you need lots of discussion and idea hashing to figure out the best solutions. So it's worth arguing about. There was barely any testing or PTR for mosaic and it's a bummer they didnt have more time to get that right in my opinion. On the other hand, weve had pretty good changes over the 2 years. more viable fire druid, summon druid, fist of heavens paladin, infinity zon, elemental skill damage applying better to ranged and charm damage, as well as new merc buffs, setups, new merc skills like enchant or static, cure and plague auras, and attack speed calculations for shapeshifting, and next hit delay fix (HUGE). And there's more, which you know already. Im just making the point that these are all EXCELLENT changes. Additionally, the changes are quite substantial and all geared towards making more viable builds. Nobody uses artic blast or inferno anyway so it wouldn't actually upset the ecosystem to remove them like your wolf example, which im familiar with by the way. You'd only need to keep the abilities in the game since enemies use them as attacks. Adding in what i suggested could be a problem if it was carelessly balanced or it could be excellent for more builds. What ive noticed too is that most of the changes were met with a loud minority of disapproval and everyone basically liked them once they were out for a while. The attack speed for shapeshifting was huge for this. People liked the old way where only the weapon factored in to the speed and it is definitely better now since you have way more gear options. Finally, your video about CTC and charges is a MASSIVE suggestion for change, waaaayy bigger than what i proposed for inferno and arctic blast. Your suggestion for charges would essentially grant what im saying here. Like charged bolt scaling with level on a Druid who buffs it with conviction and facets would be possible. Now just imagine artic blast works like charged bolt but is cold. People would use it and it wouldnt ruin the game. You also mentioned that teeth should work this as well and be able to shotgun monsters. I think in our disagreement there's a balance for more healthy additions. Thanks!

both arctic blast and inferno should be swirly cone shaped thing that will stay in a place for a second or two after you stopped channeling it, like a tornado turned 90 degrees down, additionaly i suggest higher dmg or more and more useful synergies and grizzlys chance for knockback . Voila ability solved.

I found a perfect Flamebellow last nightl (and a Shako!), which I immediately gave to my Druid. It fits thematically, but useless in any practical sense. Lots of lost potential with Inferno, in both D2 and D4

D3 solved these problems pretty well. With different types of spells as well as gear, set bonuses and gems. Similar things could probably be put in d2 as well.

Solving these issues with gear is problematic at best, and should never be the approach made. Mosaic is an example of this. Did mosaic make Martial arts skills useful yeah it did. However now you are required to use them to get good use out of those skills so you have now tied the hands of the user to one item. This is bad itemization, because you are taking away the freedom of the user.

Man i wonder how many people got dropped by monster using these skills and build an inferno or blast character and where really disappointed. Why not allow you to move while using the skill? You're basically doing that with kiting why not allow backing up with skill and running forward also throwing a bone to controller players

Your mana drained because of the specter hiting you, not the mana cost of the ability

Yes I pointed that out during the video, but it really doesn't matter where the mana drain comes from. Because the skill is Damage Per Second not Damage per cast this means 0 mana = 0 damage. Unlike with fireball where 1 cast of fireball = 14k damage. 1 shot of inferno does not = 14k damage. So any mana problems at all = complete shutdown of damage output. Which is not the case with other skills.

I used frost nova to slow mobs after kiting them, then hit them inferno. It was useful for clearing norm and adds to firewall. I dunno.. does every low lvl skill need to be viable endgame?

I see this silly idea pop up from time to time as if the level of the skill some how indicates it's usefulness. When the opposite is true that some of the powerful skills in the game are "low level skills" Corpse Explosion, Amplify Damage, Raise Skeleton, Skeleton Mastery, Warmth, Charge, Oak Sage, Ravens, Critical Strike, Inner Sight, Jab, Magic Arrow, Static Field, ect.

Pray I don't extend it further. This is an Advanced Technical Series on a specific game, and specific skills within that game. It is going to be long, Technical, and Through. Like a Lecture at a College on advanced Thermodynamics of Train Pistons. If your attention span is that short but you still want to hear about the topic, than watch it on 2x speed, the intro is hilarious sped up as well lol. And I do watch all my videos myself, for Proof Reading reasons and to see If I did a good job in general.

If you've used these skills you'd understand. Honestly I could gripe about them for upwards of 2 hours. It's one of the most dangerous things to contend with that just melts your lifebar or deletes your merc out of existence when the monsters use it on you, yet when you use it on the monsters they only get mildly annoyed you tried to give them a sunburn.

at this point just remake the whole dang thing. call it frost breath or fire breath and make it do a small cone of heavy immediate dmg
