When I was in university studying for production in game development I told my mentor that I wanted to work at Blizzard. At the time WoW was my all time favorite game so BlizArd was an abvious choice for me. My mentor was one of the original people at Activision and by extension also knew loads of leadership at Blizzard. I remember after I told him that I would like to go to Blizzard he jokingly said he knew and already contacted someone there to open up an internship position. He straight up rotated his screen and showed his DMs with an executive producer at Blizzard. A month or two pass and I didn't hear anything about that internship. When I ask him about it he takes me to a private area and tells me he won't be putting me in Blizzard for any money into he world. The day he told me was only a couple months before the massive layoffs at Blizzard. To this day I believe he saved me from a horrible career and I will be forever grateful. He also told me about sexual harassment and gross overspending in the company even before it all game to light.

Also, after having worked in the games industry I'm convinced the Blizzard development teams have no idea what they're doing. The design team and design leadership do not know how to make a game. As a game developer getting genuine feedback is one of the most difficult things. Blizzard has so much money, manpower and fans they could dominate any market in the games industry they wish but somehow they're stuck making weekly gated quests in WoW. I understand there's people that like that and that it may be part of the core of WoW but there hasn't been any noteworthy innovations to WoW since release. Too much of their additions/innovations to the game have been in function of increasing their monthly active users. I'm convinced the Blizzard dev team is incapable of making a proper MMO title. Although I would love to be proven wrong. Worth noting that the art department is an exception.

This is quite sad, but the Maxroll team reminds me of the old Blizzard company, which used to make every single game with a big heart, truly a made-by-gamers-for-gamers company. The way Maxroll play-tested DI in Alpha, doing up all the raw data and painstakingly compiling them for the playerbase to peruse was very admirable, like when Blizzard developed games such as Diablo II and Warcraft III which were so beloved around the world. Nowadays, as long as a mobile game is "free", you are either getting bombarded by ads or microtransactions. There is always invisible paywalls in "free" games so you are encouraged to spend real money to power up your game. If you cannot control spending impulses, it's better to just avoid mobile games altogether and stick to traditional paid PC/console games. based on my observation (avid mobile player here), mobile game making, more of MMO's, has followed the trend of changing its mechanics based on where it launches. The new mobile game Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds, during Korean Server and Beta test, didn't have any NFT in it, so everything for progress was supposed to be farmed, but when it scheduled for SEA and other region releases, they used those NFTs to be of significant importance to progress story-wise and gear-wise (also affects PVE and PVP heavily). In Ragnarok X: Next Generation, earlier server Taiwan, had different mechanics than that of SEA Region (different cooldowns, different pricing of packages.) It seems like there's this period of a "Maximizing Income from Whales" period, in which they rake in enormous amounts of cash, and after a time, they switch it to more of F2P-friendly stuff, where P2W stuff become so cheap that it's almost like a 'catch-up you dummy f2ps' price In my opinion, this is what happens when businessmen run games instead of gamers. I think the bait and switch alpha is very damning for Blizzard's relationship with content creators if they pursue this model for their other games. It's one thing to change your game between beta/alpha and beta/release but it's another to fundamentally change the core gameplay in order to give content creators and testers a false impression of the game.

why would they care? they already made their money and sucked a bunch of people's wallets dry. now they can go live the sweet life without having to make anymore games.
@thegrimharvest2 жыл бұрын
@@Paztacos This. 100%. Money tastes delicious, and neither Bobby nor ActiBliz are ever going to stop. Why would they? Why should they? They've created a skinner box simulation on steroids with a thin veneer of gameplay, nostalgia memberberries, and fomo. All they have to do now is sit back and vaccum up free money from minnows, fish, dolphins, whales, krakens, levithans, gambling addicts and kids with access to their parents credit cards. This may not even be ActiBliz and Bobby's final form yet. But it's a clear sign of what's to come with likely D4, etc. When you perfect the recipe you don't just discard it and start from scratch the next time you make it. At most they'll slightly scale back the hyper aggressive monetization strategy, to appear "reasonable" and having "listened to player input", while having drug the overton window violently towards their side. And gamers will say "see, they listened" it's not (as) pay to win anymore! Wow! 900% value! See! ActiBlizz cares!

I respect his decision, why waste time making guides for a game where winning is not based on skill but instead based on how many times you can swipe your credit card. Like no matter how good of a guide they will make, all it takes is one or two swipes and it overshadows weeks or months of progress in an instant.

I think the reason why mobile games are frequently pay to win probably has something to do with the fact that for whatever reason people really don’t want to pay any amount of money to download a game, even if its only a dollar. So mobile games either have to get money from ads or in game purchases, and you could argue that the in game purchases could just be cosmetics, but that would require consistent work to make new cosmetics. It’s much easier to build gates, than it is to build interesting things behind the gates.

Especially now, after all these recent records of how much of a deplorable shitshow blizzard is to work for. the harrassment charges, the murder of some of our favorite games etc...money is the only language corporations understand therefore people need to stop buying games from activision/blizzard, stop giving them money and stop giving them a reason to keep that troll-looking ass Bobby Contick around. Pirate their shit as this situation, imo, is a very good argument for pirating: A digital protest so to speak. All is fair in war and blizzards attitude towards their own fans has hit such extreme lows that something needs to happen...and that something is the publics responsibility! Boycott blizzard and let Bobby Asstick know how you feel about his troll-looking ass. And perhaps, if we succeed with blizzard, I am certain other corporations will take notice and that would be a good start for everyone.

When he says that gambling can ruin lives - the worst part is that even if you 'win' (say, spend less money than others to get the stuff you want), what do you actually get? Maybe some clout from certain communities? Gambling with a casino or a bookie can also ruin lives, but at least in that case there's a slim chance you'll buck the odds and actually come out ahead.
