The one thing I feel like Asmon gets wrong often is understanding what the "casual" gamer wants, because he isn't one. I'm an extremely casual gamer nowadays, usually only playing a couple times per week. This doesn't mean I want all these systems in place to make the game easier and more accessible. I don't care if I progress much slower than I did when I had more free time, I still want a sense of progression. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but it's just how I personally feel.

You get the sense of progression with your gear/aspects/skills and then the paragon board. Being overleveled for content is really bad. Like if you lock regions to certain levels then parts of the map would be dead as soon as you get ahead of them.

i think the point he was making about the level scaling was that people want to feel rewarded for the effort they put in and the level scaling system hampers that. at lv 2 you you might struggle against a lv 10 mob but after putting in effort you would get stronger and would absolutely destroy a lv 10 mob, that gives you a sense of accomplishment that you aren't going to have if the enemies are always at your level.

So Diablo 3 has level scaling too but it doesn't feel as bad as D4 because the gear that drops properly scales with your level, item requirement and item level are basically tied together. I don't agree with asmons take here at all.. Yes you wouldn't naturally go back to early stages if the challenge isn't there but it does show how far you've come in terms of power. The same happens in the harder zones too.. If you've made really good effeciencies in character building and affix choices in terms of gear, you'd make the harder zones look easy.. With level scaling though you wouldn't feel this as the mobs will just stay at your strength.. For those who find it difficult they can't even go away and level up a bit to progress further so there is no sense of skill. No sense of progression. I still like the game but this is a noticeable issue.

He makes some good point about the world leveling up as you do. Take Final Fantasy for exemple, you sometime find a boss that is just too hard for you to beat. What do you do ? You grind out power so you can eventually beat that road block. Then, you keep progressing until the next road block. In other words, you have a genuine feeling of progression both storywise and powerwise. In Diablo IV, there are NO road block other than Capstone Dungeons to change world tier. Everything is always scaling up to your level, which removes the feeling of becoming stronger and stronger. At this point, it's just bigger numbers on the screen without the feeling stronger behind them.

This is actually incorrect. Each zone’s enemies start 5-10 levels higher than the previous zone & only scale up to your level if you’re over-leveled for it. The problem is that it’s too easy to over-level… but fast XP is what most players asked for.

No rushing to finish the story, I wanted to enjoy the world and the side quests were actually really well done and fleshed out the world. Found myself being engaged with what I was doing. I hate that so many are probably never going to get that experience and I get why, they are tied to a grindy way to get necessary renown. But I really hate that so many people will never get to actually enjoy these quests and what they brought to building out the world. It's almost a no win situation, though. They could make the side quests absolutely phenomenal and most people would still just skip dialogue and rush through because many arpg players will simply always see these things as means to an end and evaluate them along those lines.

@@nine9_abyssactman definitely emphasized challenge and accomplishment from overcoming challenges in a created world where some places are open but close to impossible due to being weak at the moment. That’s why elden ring is a relevant example despite being a different game overall. And that you shouldn’t have to wait 40+ hours to feel the challenge of higher level enemies and incentive to improve build and gear. And if they wanted to stick with level scaling they have now, then why have an open world in the first place? Level scaling would do much better in a more linear world where all the content is packed into a relatively set path. It’s more about Blizzard having mechanics if the game contradict themselves rather than the mechanics being trash alone imo.

For me, the level scaling doesn't really take away choice. It takes away immersion. A world that conforms to your character's level seems like a false experience - even if the difficulty isn't really affected.
@doctorbleh4110

I think what act man is saying about taking away choice is more a matter of difficulty. If the game is too hard then you do more side dungeons to level up to make it easier. If it is too easy do less or no side dungeons and just push the main story so the game levels back up to match and challenge you. If the game always scales with you, and you cannot change the difficulty or at least not increase it, then the game will remain too easy. You no longer have a choice too make it harder.

Level scaling is actually more immersive for me, the horde of goblins will always be dangerous to a single person no matter how powerful if they surround them or ambush them. No matter how strong you are, you can always die to things. You can obviously take on more goblins than you did at level five, because your gear/skills/abilities still make you more powerful. In other ARPGs, if the monsters you encounter at some point of your playthrough are too strong for your character, you can always backtrack and farm levels and gear. Right. And Blizzard is at least smart enough to recognize how terrible that is, so their solution is to balance the scaling so that it's always easy. It's extremely difficult to get it "just right" and not screw over a fair number of players, so most games with scaling end up making it piss easy (or something like Oblivion, where it can be stupid-easy or ball-bustingly difficult depending on if you level up "correctly").

I really don't see how leveling scaling has "so many more benefits", I think it has 1. You can play with your friends for those that want to. However since the majority of players play solo, these changes are forced on them when they could have simply scaled party members down to the party leader's level. It diminishes the gameplay for 85% of the player base so 15% can level together sometimes.

Scaling works better in games if there's a maximum and minimum for a region. For example, a starting area might have enemies ranging from level 1-15, while a more advanced area would have enemies level 25-40. If you're level 20 the starting area will feel easy while the advanced area will feel hard. The other solution is giving players less vertical progression and more horizontal progression. For example, a 1st level character might have 100 Health and does 10 damage per attack with only 2-3 combat abilities, while a 20th level character has 200 Health and does 20 damage but has 8-10 combat abilities. Not only does this let you team up easier with people of higher or lower level, it means that starting enemies can still be dangerous even at higher levels, especially in large numbers.

GW2 does scaling best IMO. You scale level back down instead of the monsters going up, but it's not a 1:1 ratio, so the power you gain by leveling up is still reflected at lower levels, just to a lesser degree. That way you maintain static levels, scaling, and a sense of progression universally.

I like how Grim Dawn does it. It does area scalling based on when you entered teh area, some areas scale with the player but above the player level and the enemies are varied enough that you cant just faceroll them. enemies with resistance to your damage will tank a lot and enemies that do a type of damage that you have less resistance will melt you. The game has a lot of fodder mobs which is fine based on the story but there are a lot of enemies makes you feel engaged and have fun. Gutworm being a good example of that. There is a cave called smugglers basin in Act 1 that is a hollow square with a circular arena inside of it. Gutworm normally spawn 3-5 levels above the player and he hits like a truck. He can bleed you, he can area stun, he can throw net to root you and he has a lot of hp. It is a really fun fight in normal difficulty and even better on veteran, elite and ultimate.

Asmon doesn't see the scaling as an issue because he views power and growth differently. People accustomed to ARPGs by default equate power to BIGGER NUMBER (and that is the point of ARPGs) However there is a good subset of players who equate power to a more qualitative experience. This gives you a sense of direction and accomplishment as you progress and are able to kill harder enemies, and can also go back and kill enemies more easily to remind yourself of how much more powerful your character has become. there are 3 main points that would vastly improve the game for me if fixed: - Class Balance --> I love the fantasy of Sorcerers since forever, played them in D1/D2/D3 Lost Ark etc. But I switched to Druid because after the leveling is "worked" through and you found some aspects it does like 5 times the damage while surviving 10 times more... Didn't know that it is NOT normal to get 1-shot by random ranged mobs until I played other chars after my sorc. - Itemization --> Most items are crap no matter uniques or not. If I fill 100 inventories of stuff at level 100, if I'm lucky I can use them all as gold-food to try and roll 1 affix on my amulet because it already costs 7 million per try. And IF there really are uniques that you want, or you need an Amulet.. there is no way to really target farm it. If I want that Tempest Roar to build a storm wolf I can do nothing but just... running around and hope for a drop. No Horadric Cube like in D2 or D3 sadly. - Endgame... After I finally build my char and my paragon board at level 100 ... there is nothing worth doing with it. I could try to get NM lvl 100 done for.... the same loot I get at NM 50. I could "kill" my character for tens of millions of gold in respec costs to build a Char that can beat lilith and get... a mount out of it. Afterwards spend all that again to play normally. Even in D3 at paragon 1000 or 2000 I was still interested in farming that kind of item in ancestral or with the stats that I want.

That Level scaling take is the biggest L take you've ever had. You do NOT feel stronger as you level up, you feel stronger as you get more gear. If you could stay the minimum level required for your build to work, you would be stronger than a level 100 character, since the mobs scale to your level. This is only false with the Capstone dungeons, Lilith and Nightmare Dungeons, which means it's ALL of the early-midgame that scales, so you only feel like you're getting "stronger", when you have finished the campaign, done all of your renown, and the only content you have left to do is Nightmare Dungeons.

One of the biggest issues for me is renown and sidequests. As you brought up, because power is locked behind renown and you need to do side quests for it, it "forces" you to speed through them as quickly as possible. On top of that, because blizzard needs to add content to complete for renown, some of the side quests fucking suck (go kill x mobs for random quest drop). The side quests that *are* good do a great job fleshing out the world and telling interesting stories that i would have loved to do on my own time whenever i felt like going through some story. If instead of having 200+ side quests, you only had a quarter of that, but they were the quality of By Three They Come, you'd have a ton of great fucking content to play that would actually flesh out the world

It's especially bizarre when you know he has played and enjoyed Classic WoW, which has zero level scaling. Gating different areas by level is how you create a meaningful sense of place within the game. That fixed permanence is what tricks your brain into thinking you've discovered a real place. When everything scales to you, your character becomes the center of your engagement with the game. That's a very bad thing if the goal is to craft a living, breathing world.

The thing about level scaling is that a good game incorporates both static enemy levels and dynamic ones. Take Skyrim for example. Enemies around whiterun are always low level. Enemies in the end game like Alduin are locked at a high level that you can surpass. Bandits scale with you. This means the game progresses starting off as easy-ish to hard based on your difficulty, goes to medium that tracks you but you can always return to easy or try something a bit more difficult. Then once you’ve leveled up enough in the medium section, you can go to hard and still be challenged. The main quest ends, and now you are left with leveling enemies. More simply put, good game progression is this: Easy (locked) -> Medium (Dynamic leaning easy) -> Hard (locked) -> Medium (Dynamic leaning hard) Also, locked economies are good, dynamic ones are dumb. What I mean by this is games where you make more money but have to spend more for similar increases compared to earlier are dumb. It’s like if we took GTA online, but every time you unlock a new business to make more money… all the cars and stuff went up a couple hundred percent. It would make unlocking the business detrimental but also lock earlier money making opportunities out.

Enemies should have a cap up to which they can scale. Rats scale 1-2, skeletons 2-5, wolves 4-6, bears 7-10, necromancers1 10-15, demons 15-20 etc. Meaning you have flexibility for both casual and hardcore gamers, but even if you didnt minmax you would eventually overcome the challenge, and if you minmaxed, you wont get as easy of a challenge as you hoped, but you would still stomp rats if youre lvl 10

@devilsadvocate4796
@devilsadvocate4796 Жыл бұрын
For me, the issue with level scaling is the way it affects a player's sense of agency and challenge. By scaling the mobs, you create a scenario in which a seasoned player will feel the game is too easy in all scaled zones and those with less experience (and likely suboptimal builds) will feel it an endless slog. There is not a clear way to approach either player's complaints within the context of the scaled zones (ultimately, NM dungeons alleviate this to a degree for the game at large but require considerable time investment to get there). In a more traditional structure, the struggling players can go to easier zones to level up, and those breezing through the game can just keep pushing to the next challenge. In many cases, there is a difficulty spike between areas/zones to accommodate both approaches although this can feel tedious for those who want a more streamlined story experience -- which to be fair is a potential benefit of scaling if that is the desired experience. For those looking for a more conventional power progression, the campaign and early endgame of Diablo 4 just don't really provide that. You are somewhat stuck waiting for NM dungeon pushing to get that feeling which is what a number of people play ARPGs for. That all said, I have been enjoying my time in Diablo 4. I do think the complaints about scaling are reasonable though.

I loved leveling druid at wt2, it was difficult and forced me to try and understand the class. I do not like being pigeon holed into playing pulverize to push content until I get the storm helm unique or unique staff for melee storm druid. Items should enhance my experience not allow me to have an experience. I could see needing items for uber Lilith, but for general content I would like to be competitive without needing to have 80% BiS gear to push levels. It would be nice to have items that enhance leveling xp. Like 15% xp gains until lvl 70 gear. So leveling ults is less redundant. I'm a huge fan of class quests, I think it adds a significant level of immersion to a game. And if there were class quests that enhanced certain skills, that could be a way of making empowering skills and adding to the overall experience. IMO class specific quests is what made classic wow so good. It made you feel vested in a character, and the power upside obtained through the uniqueness of the upgrade and quest line in general made it that much more of an experience

The lack of challenge in the game is an extreme demerit, I personally leveled as a Barbarian , but I went Walking Arsenal; I went from 1-100 on that class and didn't feel a single shred of a challenge from any PvE content , even during 70+ nightmare dungeons, but I grinded it out and hoped for the best. I finally got to lilith and basically found out that if I wanted any chance of being able to beat her, I'd have to change my build entirely, and I think that's terrible game design. I've never played a game where I can spend hundreds of hours optimizing my particular build only to find out that it's useless against the pinnacle boss, and the only argument I've seen for this design is "it's traditional in ARPG's for some bosses to make you change builds" The difficulty of any mob in the game except Uber Lilith is like a 2, and Lilith is like a 100. Lilith is a fun fight too which makes it even more miserable that I spent hundreds of hours getting to 100 and I effectively felt as much challenge as I would in a vampire survivors run after I've got my items, just with none of the satisfaction.

That's 100% the real issue. People are getting too hung up on level scaling when it's really not the problem. The problem is not "feeling" more powerful as you progress which is the fault of gear/itemization rather than level scaling. Even if there wasn't level scaling, the game would still have some tiered leveling schematic where zone 1 would be 1-20, zone 2 would be 20-30, then 30-40, 40-45, and 45-50. The game would be artificially engineered, like any RPG for the most part, to "scale" to your level and force you to level to the zones that you're at which would effectively provide the same experience that we have now. The only difference is that you'd be able to go back to zone 1 as a lvl 50 and oneshot packs with your basic skill which I honestly find to be extremely unengaging, so I'm not sure why so many people are trying to champion this idea.

I think the causal player isn't looking up build guides or consulting the internet to see what works and what doesn't. So you have a lot of people playing suboptimal builds and the scaling feels worse.

I think this a hugely overlooked thing by streamers and people that know the game really well. If you try to make a build without a ton of game knowledge or a build guide you could end up making something pretty lackluster even if you have common sense, and then the scaling makes the game feel bad.

This isn't true anymore. Nowadays the majority, even of casual players, is meta-gaming. Everyone looks up "best diablo 4 builds" and plays the small list of meta builds. There is much less experimentation, especially from casual players.

Beating andy on normal can cause you to think D2 as a whole is easy (some chars do struggle with early andy though). It's a really complex game especially in single player or when doing speedruns or other fun game themes. It's difficult and tedious enough that many softcore online players get rushed because they are unable to advance alone. It is an extremely rewarding playthrough on hardcore mode The monsters are scaled by area and by player count so when you level up your character you can come back and feel very powerful in previous zones. This also gives players a choice to stay in a previous area looking for loot and leveling up to better prepare for the next area and naturally allowed for different gear to be dropped in different areas based on the surrounding monster level. This lends extra ripples to speedrunning tradeoffs of loot finding and overleveling vs finish time. Not a perfect system and probably would not work for D4 with the progression systems they have in place and their intended group play vision

Remember hogger back in vanilla and BC WoW? How he was an elite mob that required you to form a party at a recommended level to defeat, otherwise he would one shot you? Now imagine being at current max level with the best gear for your class with best enchants and best build for pve. You decide, for whatever reason, to go back and defeat hogger, to one shot him. But when you get to him, he isn't a level 20 elite (i don't remember what his level originally was, i stopped playing shortly after cata), he's an elite at your level. You cannot one shot him. But he can beat your ass. If enemies are going to scale with you, in an rpg, then why would you leave your starting area?

You outscalled the world difficulty because you were playing with a broken class, that's pretty simple to understand if you think about it. You should try it with druid at that time... or try high level nightmare dungeons with a mage class.

my only issues are the lack of build variety within the majority of the classes.. Sorc only feels good when your primary skills are ice, necro only feels great if using bone spear and good if using shadow, etc.. and lack of ability to target farm build defining uniques, even if it would take time having a way to progress to get the gear piece you NEED for a build to work.. Idc if it was gated by a hard boss and some arbitrary drop rate %.. Before anyone comes at me about RNG I have a maxed OSRS account, at least on RS you have a trgt location you can go for items or mobs you can trgt farm.. even if you can't do the content you could farm elsewhere and trade for it. I'd much rather have a trgt farming location or boss with arbitrary RNG % to get the item I need. (also not talking about the 1/5m uber uniques)

I think an idea TheActMan was trying to paint with the Scaling topic and that people didn't seem to get is not about what happens after you out-level an area, it's about before that. We do know that, technically we do have some level restrictions before we can progress thru the story even though most of those requirements are minimal (level 10). But before we get there, the WHOLE rest of the game is synced right to our level. Remember how before every major story point in a RPG, like FF1-10, there was a boss fight that was relatively difficult depending on how much you grinded before you get there? The fight will challenge you depending on your power at that point, so you either have to tackle it with big brain strategies to make up for your lack of stats or sheer power from grinding beforehand. In D4 you don't have that choice. Either you are too low level to accept the quest or you are now trapped in the scaling world where everything is synced to your current power making boars and balrogs feel like the same creatures in terms of power.

i agree about the leveling. RPGs are supposed to be hard at start, where you struggle with basic enemies and you become strong over time where enemes that used to sweep the floor with you are now killable or even easy. Character progression has to be felt. If everything scales it ruins the progression because you never FEEL stronger. And it can lead to ridiculous outcomes look at Oblivion - if Bandits scale with the player you will encounter thugs clad in full daedric armor. they could just sell that and live like kings for the rest of their lives but nah they just keep on riskign their lives mugging people.

The scaling discussion makes me think of my time in 76 around the One Appalachia update (the universal scaling update similar to One Tamriel for ESO) It was meant to circumvent the issue of getting lower level gear in some public events (i.e. Uranium Fever) since like most games, you can't upgrade gear level despite there being leveled unique and sometimes character bound quest rewards (why Bethesda?) Also to make endgame leveling less of a slog. For the most part, it was a good change, but like most of 76 updates, there were caveats. One was no longer being able to farm low level legendaries with the recurring non-public event Leader of the Pack. Trading good low level rolls was a big thing to make things easier/funner when grinding a new character. The other thing was the issue of the average mob taking too long to kill and for a while after the update, mid-tier level characters were getting their ass handed to them by groups of damn dogs of all things that chased you to the ends of the earth due to how agro mechanics in 76 worked just as they did in your typical BGS game compared to other MMOs or shared world games. Again... why not just give us the option?

Regarding level scaling topic: Easy fix, just like helltide, make some zones scale playerlevel+X , where X will define how hard the zone is, so closer to towns it will be X=0 as in same level as player, and further away it scales up depending on the zone theme. This can be implemented from the start to make these zones feel "dangerous". Each difficulty tier the max range is increased, tier 1 X would be like 5, tier 4 X would be like 50 etc EZ, hire me blizz

I am somewhere in the middle between casual and hardcore players, I play 1-3 hours a day. And I must say that I didn't mind level scaling during the campaign, but I seriously started to hate it after I finished it. I did the capstone for world tier 4 around level 62, between levels 62 -75 I got most of the gear that I am still wearing now at level 90 and with each level I get my character feels progressively weaker.

Ye everyone has learned that the subscription model is the way to go, because people totally forget that they've signed up to subscriptions, and they keep siphoning money away from you every month. I agree with this. Before, games were great, you pay once, some were expensive but it was worth it, you play it a few times, they release a better one, then you move on. Now adays, people accept the mentality of paying a sub for everything is better cause it means they will make the game better, but so far, almost all good games turn bad cause they always find ways to insert more micro transactions for every little thing.

Your Power isnt about the level you are, its about the gear you have on with all the stats, the aspects , skills and paragon board. Better stats you have on your gear, farther into your skill tree providing more tools, passive tools. Farther into your paragon board, the stronger you will feel. The reason why there are so many useless stats, its to make the difficulty to getting best gear for your build. More affix there are the harder it is and longer you have to grind.They want to extend the grind, explains why its so expensive to reroll stats from the occultist which is to keep the grind going.

@Dantes230 I was in top 10 worldwide with DH in D3 in 2014 :) It was just in terms of dps but my greater rift was at 72. I stopped afterwards cause of cheaters who were looting with bots while sleeping and boredom. In short, I’m not new to the game :) I play with rouge. There are quite many glitches and tbh honest many times shadowstep did not get me out of being stunned. Sometimes I don’t even see the cursor anymore😂 Gotta make that bigger and different color. I stopped at level 67 tier 4 dungeon level 30 about 2 weeks ago. I’m almost 35 now. I guess I dont have the same motivation for D4 as I had for D3 a decade ago🤷🏻‍♂️ Still too poor also to imprint proper and extract necessary skills on items😅 And the paragon board is waaay exaggrated imo. Anyways, thanks for your replies guys, cheers🙂
