I enjoy your videos. In my shop we took an old bulb socket with an 1157 bulb installed. Use the pigtails from the socket inserted in any airbag circuit. It is about the same resistance. Has worked on every one we've tested to date. Peace.

My first experience with a clock spring was when I was parting out our POS '00 GMC Jimmy. I got a little ham-fisted ripping the steering column apart, and TWAAAANG! Ribbon everywhere. Had no idea what it was until I went on the net, HAHAHA! Good thing it wasn't going back together ... Thank God that vehicle will not haunt another soul again -it's parts are all over the world now. :D

man this is really handy, chrysler's diagnostic flow chart for these codes involves using the factory scan tool plus a special tool that comes in a briefcase with a bunch of different connectors and an airbag simulator thing, this is a real time saver, half of the time you couldn't even find the right connector on the special tool, and it was always was a broken clock spring

Yep 99.99999% clock spring & am amazed at how long they last. I only put in OEM especially when it comes to air bags & components...will not install anything else for the customer's safety. Nice video as usual!

I agree, I push OEM but I have some customers that just won't send the money. The only aftermarket I can get usually are Dorman and they last abut 3-6 months if that long.

The term squib is also the name of the igniter for stage fireworks at a rock concert. Sometimes they just refer to the entire device that the pyrotechnics shoot out of as a squib.

Great vid, Eric. If a person doesn't have a Verus, do you think connecting an LED instead of the resistor would work? I'd imagine that as you spin the wheel, you'd possibly see some changes in brightness. Just a thought.

Important question: *Why* can’t we hook up an ohm meter to the back of the clock spring and check the air bag resistance? Is this because the meter’s test voltage might trigger the inflator charge? 😬

They don't share a common connection. The clock spring is basically a ribbon cable, constant flexing over time just breaks the wires.

Last time it was just some resistance in the air bag connectors. Can you just clean up the clock spring or do you have to replace them?

Replace, they are wound wire bands in an internal sprung unit, as the name implies. The wire can break or partially break at any point in that long roll. No real way to clean or fix them unless it's just a dirty connector.

Perhaps a dumb question but...if it's a bad clock spring, wouldn't squib 1 AND squib 2 be affected as you turn the wheel? Why is only one circuit impacted?

Clock spring has wires for squib 1, squib 2, steering wheel buttons, etc. In this case only the wire for squib 1 got broken.

Hello, I have B1B06 code in my JEEP WK. I change clockspring yesterday for original part from MOPAR. After montage part and switching on the starter, airbag light still shine. I check the codes and i have B1B03. Driver airbag squib 1 have constant resistance 1.5ohm and driver airbag squib 2 have constant resistance 3.1ohm. Squib 1 have too low resistance. Plis help me, what can I do?

Unhook the Negative Battery Term and pull the SRS fuse ( Airbag )

Good idea, but wasn't Eric checking the circuit with power on? Or did he disconnect before taking the airbag out, then reconnect to test the circuit? Or is it safety third at SMA - LOL!

Yo Eric cool bypass test! So why can't you use an ohmmeter to check the resistance of an airbag circuit? Isn't that what the SRS module is doing anyways to get the scan data values?

It most certainly is but I am victim of listening to old automotive myths like never use an ohm meter on an air bag, never use a test light on a computer, always shut the engine off before changing oil and things like that. It is a classic case of speaking before thinking. Could you imagine what would have happened in the comments if I used an ohm meter to check the bag!?

A tip, a 3.3 ohm is a very common value in the electronics world and that would work too. Back when Radio Shack existed, you could pick up a pack there.

Can any one help? I have an 03 Dodge Dakota SXT truck and the Air bag light is on. I bought a code reader that reads air bag codes and ABS codes (ABS - SRS) I checked the SRS and got no error codes I checked the truck and no error codes I got " P done" when I cycled the ignition 3 times. I checked the ABS and I got some strange codes. There was no letter before the code just the numbers and letters. the codes I read were and I will enter them as they appear on the scanner -> 0001 DODGE, 0002 DODGE, 0003 DODGE, 0004 DODGE, 0005 DODGE, 0006 DODGE, 0007 DODGE, 0008 DODGE, 0009 DODGE, 000A DODGE, 000B DODGE, 000C DODGE, 000D DODGE, 000E DODGE, AND 000F DODGE.

After replacing the clockspring, I would leave Eric's test resistors permanently installed and not plug the airbag back in. That's how I have my own personal vehicle rigged up, no lie :)
