@@parochial2356 Not only the shooting and editing, that was nothing compared to the preparation of the battery pack, and even longer I imagine was the time taken to learn all this stuff. I reckon the manufacturers must take 4 weeks to train technicians with all this knowledge that Dan gives in the video.

This is a great video for someone who's willing to give it a try. Where I live a Toyota Prius with a dead battery can be had for cheap. Sometimes it's just one or two cells that are weak, or there might be corroded contacts. For someone doing doing their own repairs parts are readily available and cheap.

For training on a Prius, the instructor separated our group into two groups. Before Lunch, one group made safe and removed the battery pack from the vehicle. The other group made safe and removed the Inverter Assembly from the same vehicle. The instructor removed the battery covers and removed one of the cells. Then he removed the Inverter cover. He then explained what went on inside. Then we put the covers back on, reinstalled the Inverter and Battery pack. We then verified the vehicle started, ran, and no codes were present. After lunch, the groups reversed their positions on the second vehicle, removing the battery pack and inverter assembly. Again battery covers and inverter cover were removed, parts identified, reassembled, reinstalled, vehicle started, and no codes. Time in the shop on two vehicles including lunch hour, 6 hours. Time in class room, 1 hour. MY KIND OF TRAINING!

Nice series Dan. I have always wondered about the battery systems on the highbred vehicles. I understand they cost something like $20,000 to replace and that their life span is only around 8-10 years. It seems the wrecking yards will fill up fast with these expensive vehicles as their expensive batteries go bad. Frankly, I just don't see the economy in it. Not to mention all the small sensors and such that can fail. I'm just not behind it yet. To buy an expensive vehicle only to toss it in the dump 8-10 years later seems like a terrible idea. My last car was a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria which I had for 20 years. It was still immaculate and running great when I sold it recently. It cost a fraction of what an Outlander costs and will run another 20 years if taken care of. I still feel internal combustion is the most economic idea to come along. The electrics just aren't there yet.

I agree. really unselfish sharing of knowledge that is very rare , usually you get guys that get really good at thier trade and hold back the information so they have the technical edge or a sure income type of repeat job , its an ego and self preservation / job security trait that can be understood e.g say you do a niche job not known to many then you go on youtube for fame and spill all the information letting everyone in on the job you have taken months and years to learn and make a viable business, then over night everyone is fixing thier own stuff and make yourself obsolete

Excellent series Dan, very informative. Noticed you were doing your disassembly on a conductive diamond plate bench. For safety’s sake, you need to work on a non- conductive surface. While the voltage is low, shorting a battery or even a single cell on that surface might be “exciting” and also possibly component destructive. Keep up the great work.
