So cool, Dan! Love the in-depth explanation on the whiteboard of knowledge :) A couple questions:1) Since MOSFET driver is controlled by positive voltage on the gate, how do you know 100% that the ECU chip was damaged by the shorted MOSFET?2) How did you take care of the "immobilizer issue"? Please show us!3) I must admit that is a beautiful clean BMW...how does it look brand new?

+Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics Hi Ivan! Well Most CPU's work with a maximum 3.3V if you consider that the Mosfet was shorted and the history of the car said that it had a shorted primary coil winding then we can assume that +12V power coming from the coil circuit went trough the signal ECU wire and then through the shorted Mosfet getting at the end to the CPU circuit and burning it. The shorted primary coil circuit and the shorted Mosfet both became a bridge or road for the +12V to get directly to that CPU. Cheers Ivan!

I just had a Subaru in my shop that was towed in from the dealer due to dying on the highway and not restarting. Dealer quoted him an engine at NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!! I scope the coil drivers, cams and crank. The cams and crank look good. The coil drivers are all over the place. Just needed an ECM. *Superman theme plays in background*

Late to the party here but it really amazes me how many shops attempt to do this type of work either without a scope, or they have a tool with a built-in scope and have no idea how to use it. A dead ignition coil driver should be a trivial thing for any diagnostic technician, and your video demonstrated the process very well. It also demonstrated how such a simple diagnosis was out of reach for the other shop, yet they attempted the repair anyway. which basically means they read the misfire code and replaced the coil and plug for that cylinder. If you don't know how it works or how to test it, don't replace it!
@briankotze576 жыл бұрын
When u diagnose it seems so easy and obvious that it seems that other shops just dont know what they are doing. But the main thing is the scope. Without a scope on modern cars you are a bit lost. I think most tech's think you just plug in a scantool and the car will fix itself.
@Diagnosedan6 жыл бұрын
brian kotze very true! scantools only point you into a certain direction! The diagnosing starts after reading the codes! And a scope makes you see what's happening!
@NewLevelAuto6 жыл бұрын
Wish I could hit that heart button too
@stanleytolle4166 жыл бұрын
Could use an old fashion tac. or rpm meter. That would tell you that you are getting signal to the coil or not. Testing the CPU should have shown a bad coil driver. The first shop at this point was dumb founded of course. They most likely tested the wire to the coil and it was good too. I guess that's politics today. You can't trust what anybody tells you, even when you pay to have the truth told to you.

Dan ,that was the best PCM and mosfet video I've seen to date.I learned about power supply and laptop repair in the last year.And i bought a hot air station to remove and replace cpu's and mosfets and capacitors.I do it for fun only,when you see someone do this work in front of you ,it looks easy. IT NOT,it takes some practice but more importantly it takes the ability to find and read schematics.Honda ,BMW Toyota don't put those out on the internet for people to see.Also you need to be able to micro-solder.THIS type of repair takes someone with OCD to master it...haha you made it sound to easy.I see IVAN wants to learn,he's good at fixing without parts,he can use his thermal viewer to spot the bad mosfet ,but he's going to need a whole new level of tools.haaha.Great video Dan !

Dealer just tried to replace ECU without thinking further (and said I’d have to pay for it if it was fried again!). I asked them to replace alternator voltage regulator. This is a very good video and I am impressed with Dan's knowledge. I'm a retired Electronics Technician and I"ll bet the smaller IC chip just under the pencil at 16:33 is the driver chip that drives the power Moss FET transistors. and most likely it is also bad. The actual processor chip is probably good. Most of the time the processor needs a little help when it comes to driving power transistors so there is often another IC chip between the processor and the output transistors. The thing is, where can one find an actual schematic of the complete computer board? Most of the time you can't and without it, you are only guessing. All said a great job on this video!

Awesome work sir. I have question about three wire BMW coil. We have power supply to primary coil through fuse and PCM provides ground to turn primary coil on. Why do we need ground wire on secondary coil. Isn't spark plug grounded through engine block? I hope this question make sense. Thank you again for this outstanding diagnoses and tutorial. Cheers my friend.
@Diagnosedan6 жыл бұрын
KY Home Garage KY Home Garage It makes a lot of sense and this is actually a great question! That wire goes to ground thru a resistor. The PCM monitors the voltage drop across the resistor. This way it can monitor if the secondary has fired. So the short answer is that it's used for misfire diagnosis.
@kyhomegarage34306 жыл бұрын

This video made me change all my ignition coils to new ones last year. Don't want problems with computer or coil drivers. (Also E36, and same engine)

Brilliant video. Love your teaching and explanations making what could be classed as complicated, understandable. Great to see what happens inside the 'black boxes'.

Excellent job on solving and teaching the steps to take to achieve the RIGHT diagnosis, I bet either the coil was zapped out or the sparkplug had such a overextended gap so the coil was being made to overwork itself hence frying the driver for #6 ignition coil.

Thanks for the explanation. My truck was having an issue of no ignition spark causing it to not start at all, after replacing all ignition parts the ECU was the only thing left. I sent it to a company that repairs them and they said it had a bad ignition coil driver. So they replaced it. I hope that solves my problem!
