Good video Dan,. Good old fashion "VD" voltage drop. I do think Flexray is going to be used for all new vehicle's, and for autonomous applications via ADAS. Flexray speed is 20Mbit/sec through the gateway into the ADAS system and steer by wire systems all we have to do for the limp home mode for that situation is get the computer to turn on your four-way flashes cuz you're going to be coming to a fast stop. With the LIDAR system and ADAS it'll be able to pull you over fairly easily having 360° view of all surroundings.

I want to learn more! Nice repair. I would have covered the bare terminal with silicone sealer. This connection is in the path of corrosive elements, bad choice on BMW’s part. Solder and heat shrink is the only option for any permanent repair. Here in America, the majority of mechanics think it is proper to use crimp connectors and call it fixed.

Awesome video Dan! Thomas EXOVCDS positive voltage will always try to find a way to ground, when a big ground cable is bad the current can start to flow thru a smaller cable or circuit that was not designed to carry this current ( like blowing a fuse) the circuit can become overloaded and fail.

When we were torquing down the bolt on the back wishbone arm that black cord on the steering rack with the 3 wires got stuck behind the bolt and went un-noticed. When we were don’t the power steering wouldn’t work. Not sure how to fix it I got the wires from behind the bolt and had to solder them together and still no power to the steering rack. I’m not sure what to do… or what had happened

In essence, what you're saying is that, if you first replace the rack with a new one, the new $2000 rack will get fried before you've even had the chance to realize there's an additional problem.... now that's some "excellency" in engineering. Congrats to you bmw.... you've "done" it again... f*****ckin BMW! I'm pretty sure that the bad ground (high resistance, low current flow) Didn't cook the module. You would need excessive current flow which you dont get from high resistance. Great video tho keep em coming
@Diagnosedan7 жыл бұрын
Diagnostic Check, try to jumpstart a car using a speaker wire, it will work but it creates a lot of heat in the wire and the wire would eventually fail. There was no ground on the Eps but still there was enough current flow to raise the voltage in the flexray wires.(It did not even light the test light). And the electric motor was not working at this point. Now imagine the point where the Eps was still working but the ground was starting to get bad.
@diagnosticcheck98037 жыл бұрын
DiagnoseDan does starting a car with a speaker wire damage the starter motor in any way? I don't think it does due to there being a voltage drop/less current flowing. When has a bad ground/live EVER caused the component designed to be in the circuit to fail?
@kaistlouisss6 жыл бұрын
Diagnostic Check if the path to ground is through a pcb that can’t handle the excess current flow it will burn, no? The way I understand it the motor wasn’t burnt, the module on the motor was toast
@felixcat43465 жыл бұрын
Diagnostic Check, there is no arguing with a KZbin provider trying to make a dramatic or shocking point. He's making egregious claim like you can run enough current through speaker wires to turn a starter. It just not going to happen.

Hi, I have been enjoying your video. Since I have owned a BMW Z4 E89 and recently having tech issues on the EPS, I would like to obtain your views on replacement parts. BMW Dealer here says the car can be fixed by exchanging whole steering column. But cause of problems was faulty EPS motor. So I have done separating motor and sent to a professional for rebuild. The fixed motor was back on the steering column and car is fine now. Shall we relay on assembly parts exchange based fixing for long term reliability or finding the real cause of problems and replace individual parts for saving costs?

Hi there, very nice video, thanks a lot. I have mechanicly bad steering rack . Got another and swapped the EPS units thinking car would think it is the same EPS but did not work. Is it possible to get a replacement rack and stick original EPS to the motor or they go as a pair? I did just that and getting CD951B message - actual steering torque driver actuator/actual force rack , 49.0.2 - signal invalid. I suspect that EPS and torque sensor on the rack don't like each other.Reprogrammed, recoded using ISTA but with no avail

Hello, I have the exact same car, F20, and I had a warning the other day about EPS fault, I pulled to the side of the road, turned off the car, turned back on, since then there is no problem. Could this be a one time thing? The car is just out of oil change and general service. Is it a possibility that the service guy worked on a nearby area to the EPS and moved those cables out of their places, or something? Should I be worried? Wait for another fault ?
