@@arga1966 I had a Lexus that had a strange problem before. After I turned and removed the key, the engine would continue to run. The engine continued to run for another 2 or 3 minutes and then turned itself off. You would probably think that the key cylinder was bad and needed replacing. That was my first thought as well. But the problem continued after the key cylinder was replaced. Turned out that it was the car's ECU that was faulty. The replacement part was around $2800. Fortunately, the car was still under factory warranty at the time, so I didn't have to pay. It's still running great today, after almost 230,000 miles.

@DiagnoseDan I had a similar issue with a Skoda Octavia of the same age. Came into our shop with an oil leak, that once fixed by my colleague, the engine was steam cleaned off by him with it running. He drove it back in the shop saying the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree with warning lights. After switching off, it would not restart. There was no comms either with a scan tool. I half expected the fault to be under the bonnet from the steam cleaning, but (long story short) testing with scope found the bus shorted to ground, which I located to the gateway. I removed it and water ran out of it! Turns out, a poorly fitted replacement windscreen meant the steam cleaner pushed water through a gap in the windscreen sealant and down the bulkhead sound insulation straight into the top of the GW module! So we had to buy the customer a new GW module and inform them their windscreen needed resealing. Bad luck for us, but a lesson learned.

@persimonsen8792
@persimonsen8792 11 ай бұрын
It could, but the gateway is not 12V. It's probably 3V3 or 5V. So a 50C voltage regulator is probably all it needs.

@@Diagnosedan You nailed it right away, anyway! (that's why I'm here- to learn) I was just trying to think how the complaint came to be: what changed? accident; what happened in that accident? alternator was replaced. (you checked for water damage in the central gateway*; water damage messes up the electrical components; voltage spikes, from, perhaps, a compromised alternator, could also damage the electrical components) * I have an MB W211 car and I follow various issues with these cars and have discovered that water incursion, from poorly sealed windshields, result in failed/failing central gateways: fortunately I haven't had this issue.

I’m sure you aren’t the only person in the world with such a confident and thorough knowledge of the black magic of modern CANBUS systems, but you are the only one I know of and it’s very reassuring that it isn’t actually magic or “weird”. It’s all stuff that can be symptomatic and for the right person possessing the proper knowledge and experience, it’s just following the chain down to the problem, like any other problem on a car.

Love this!! My 15 Sportwagen TDI went in for a random check engine light and it ended up having a short in the wiring harness, needing a new ECM, and some other items were replaced under an aftermarket warranty and the TDI warranty. I wonder if the issue was the wiring harness/engine loom all along. Luckily, I didn’t have to cover all the parts and labor.

My brother's 2009 TTs has a similar issue. It would turn over but not start 9/10. On the 1 occasion that it did catch, it would stall soon after. Couldn't get it to connect to a scan tool that had worked fine in the past. One VAG specialist he took it to charged him £300 for the privilege of telling him it 'might' be the ECU. Bosch in Germany told my brother, take it to any Bosch dealer who would send it to them (no public service) and they would send it back repaired for €450. No Bosch dealers would take it in for us INCLUDING Audi main dealer. After a month of not being able to drive it he had it towed to Audi and said sort it out. £1800 later and he had a brand new ECU and a working car once again. No one seems to want to repair parts these days just fit new ones. To me, that is NOT good enough.

Just started watching, paused at 1:04 The situation you've described happend a couple of years ago to my grandfather's car. This was a Ford Mondeo, one time during a storm, a tree fell on top of the car. It went into the dealer's shop, they "fixed" it, then it started to do weird things, been back to the shops like 6 times and they couldnt replicate or find the problem. It ended with the car starting itself and driving down a hill without anyone inside, landing on top of some metal poles, totaled, luckily nobody was hurt. (My grandfather had seen his car starting itself(lights turning on) and driving off through the kitchen window when he was eating breakfast) Turns out it was the windshield, the tree that fell onto the car busted among other things the windshield, they replaced the windshield but apparently theres some circuitry or sensors inside or connected onto the windshield and they were supposed to calibrate or reset a module or computer, which they forgot or didnt know, these systems were brand new at that time. I don't know the exact details but that's what my grandfather told me happend and what caused it to happen. Anyway, going to watch the video now, I wonder if it's a similar problem. Edit: Well, it wasn't the same, stil interesting though. Thank you Dan! Informative and entertaining.

Very good job Dan. Keep up the good work! I enjoy your videos very much but maybe would make sense to warn people to don't try ECU swapping for testing on the newer generation cars because problems can appear. For example on BMW where the BDC is the gateway too if you swap it for testing with a module from another car it will trigger component protection on headunit.

As a mk6 owner I can say that the car doesn't crank itself. It has an automated start procedure. You just give the key an impulse and it does auto start. It's more like cars with push start buttons. It also has auto restart, if you kill the engine a simple push of the clutch will restart it, no need to turn the key. I think that defective gateway played tricks to the start procedure.

I had a similar issue a year ago with an Audi a7. Car went to a few shops and no one still able to fix it. I got a pathways now because of you’re video to see If it’s same issue. But I was the same issue. But if I had the hazardz turned on and driver door open. It would communicate but still no start

I think you should investigate what wakes up the network. When you put the hazards on the networks wake up. On some cars we would put the hazards on while programming to make sure the network doesn't go to sleep.

You fixed it again, Dan! I really appreciate your professional standards. Once again, you have proved that an oscilloscope is a great tool to have in a car repair shop. The coding of the gateway will be a challenge if nobody saved it before but it is not impossible. Great job and thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Many vehicle manufacturers today have a database with the vehicle options and configurations today, but they may request that it's programmed by a dealer. It's a grey zone of repairability there. To me a gateway module makes sense primarily to protect the vehicle from issues that could impact the CAN bus traffic from the OBD port. Some cars are exposing their main CAN bus on the OBD port and that could cause some headaches if you plug in the wrong accessory on the OBD port.

@@ehsnilsSome VAG vehicles have a sticker in the trunk with the complete options. Some have it in the owner's manual.

@@repairingmasterYes, you’re right, but that are options from the factory. If one adds afterwards for example a towing hitch the module for commanding the trailer lights has to be programmed into the gateway as an other audio system that will be replacing the old one. That’s the VAG way.

@@DrDre-ir4gu Correct. I once had a challenge with a new beetle that reported troubles with the sliding roof mechanism but was lacking one. Turned out that the entire piece was replaced with one piece rooftop after a vehicle rollover during a crash.
