Dan, without question you have the "Gift" to impart knowledge! No question about it - your presentation was a "10" all of the way! Having worked, and taught, a lot of Aircraft Avionics, I really love to watch and listen to someone who can make a difficult system very easy to understand. You are one of the best I've ever seen or heard.Many thanks for helping me understand (at least on a cursory level) the CAN buss - just learning how all of "this" fits together. :) At 79 years of age, I'm just now learning how to work (somewhat) on my vehicle ('07 Lacrosse, 3.6 Ltr.) I'm gaining some ground, and I'm sure your tutorials will be a great assist. Can't thank you enough.

I don't know what to say really, just that I'm very honored. Respect that you are trying to learn about the can-bus system at 79! Another reminder that we are never finished learning in this industry. An honor having you here Sir, thanks for watching my video's it's appreciated Micheal👍💪

I have always sent vehicles with canbus issues to the auto electrician down the road. After watching this video and having the mysteries uncovered I feel confident in diagnosing the next one myself. This also reaffirms that information is key to success. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks, you just did. I am a tech in my 60s and still enjoy learning, thank you for this information.

Hello Dan. I must say this is the best demonstration I have yet to see regarding Can diagnosis! only a select few people I have found In my search of education have been able to break down what at first seems to be overwhelming complicated syestems/scenarios into it's most simplest form Making learning fun and injoyable. You sir are the real deal! Few and far between! We are all blessed to have you sharing with us. Thank you Wil.

Dan got called in on a 2012 VW Touraug the other day for a parking brake fault. The guys had done rear brakes and rotors, the parking brake is drum setup with electric actuators , they had not touched this during the brake job. Apparently before the brake joe they should have gone in and recorded the Coding number and mm clearance stored in the module, was not able to restore function. Trip to the dealer , tough system

Great direction with the cluster codes. I like the simple process you take. Pick a system, and stick to, which is better than jumping back & forth between systems. You truly break down the back probing too. Impressive. Good to show how to do testing properly. Another thing I've noticed is the clarity in your schematics. In the network engineering world we call "echo" signal reflection and the twists are to prevent cross talk with other pairs (which would be the same as interference from another inductive load). In the old day of thin net we use to use terminators at the end of the run for the exact same reason.

Oops, I had a question Dan and forgot to mention it in my previous post. If the ABS module was unplugged and it didn’t make any difference, do you typically plug it back in and move to the next module? Or do you leave it unplugged and move to the next module? The reason I’m asking is when there is a possibility of more than one module fault on the bus. Thank you!
@Diagnosedan
@Diagnosedan 6 жыл бұрын
stuzman, i would have plugged it back. The chance that you have 2 modules failing at the same time is not likely.

Thank you very much for this video. I’ve been facing U012587 issue on my 2021 toyota Sienna and no one is able so far to figure out the problem. 😢 Decided to watch some tutorials and try figuring out the problem (so maybe I could fix myself) and your videos with very detailed explanations (and examples ) are AMAZING! 👍👍👏👏🤩🤩

I was an auto tech for over 40 years, retired in 2014, and spent many times at the manufactures training center. Could never fully understand C-Can or Bus until now. I just wish that you, or someone like you, had been my instructor for all those 40 years. EXCELLENT VIDEO.

They say that a good teacher is able to make a complicated subject seem simple. The drawing illustrating the effect of parallel resistors was incandescent. It was like walking into the room labeled canbus, closing the door, wallowing in total darkness. Then along comes Dan. With a pair of LED’s. Download this video, and put it on all your gadgets, so u don’t lose it. I am

DiagnoseDan sir I'm an electrician and yesterday customer bring me a car Hyundai Elantra 2016 and the problem is abs and pcm BCM not communicating the indicator lights are on and rpm isn't working gear is not shifting properly he said he had an accident and after that the problem starts I check with multimeter the wiring is good from OBD2 to ECU I checked the ohms are 61.1 it seems also good I removed the abs circuit and tried to diagnose again but still same I opened the whole wiring from front side where the car damaged I got some wires cuted and grounds were broken I fixed it and then I tried to scan it again but still same the only module is communicating is airbag and it's showing the crash record code only I removed some 5 volt sensors like AC pressure sensor and coolant temperature sensor I thought maybe 5 volts are shorted but still no communication what should I do next ?

Dan, the E39 is known for ABS module problems.. It also causes the Spittronic gearbox to force the car into LIMP mode. (My own e39 also has the same problem.) But you explained it in more detail, than most Auto /Mechanics "knowing" precisely what is going on, behind the scenes, so to speak.

Excelent video! Thank you! I Subscribed, allowed me to add (of course you know that but just for the subscribers) that also the twisted wires in a CAN line perform the function of creating a electromagnetic field all along and around the cables that does not allowed any (or very little) outside electrical and electomagnetic interference (noise) to the main signals. I also have a question Dan, can you please tell me in which of the CAN cables(CAN Low or CAN High) does the Middle CAN signal travels on? Thank you for the answer.

I was always wondering in you could have a Can-Bus issue & still read 60 ohms on the Can-Bus line. I always check pins 6 & 14 on the OBD11 port. Apparently that only tells you about a open or shorted line. Well you confirmed it for me. Good lesson as always Dan
