Update: This fix held true until my battery was getting old. It showed the exact same symptoms of cranking but not starting. After diagnosing, I found out that the fuel pump would get enough voltage to prime, but while the starter was cranking, the fuel pump had insufficient voltage due to the consumption of the starter. You can easily test your battery for this issue by taking it down to your local auto parts store for a free battery load test or you can pick up the handheld load tester I have linked in the description of this video. I hope this was helpful to you and don't forget to subscribe! Cheers!

It appears that the fuel pump relay is the common cause of this issue. I have yet to take the time after this video to test that theory but since this video, the problem has gotten worse to the point that the fuel pump no longer primes after the first time. I suspect the relay at this point.

At this point (plug out) also check condition of plug. If spark yes, plug dry- no fuel to cylinder. Sometimes, when engine sit a while they lose the prime. 1.Key on, 2.listen for pump to run and stop, 3.key off. Repeat 2-3× before cranking over. Crank over. Fire yes-good. Fire no- check plug for raw fuel again. That's when I start dumping tools on the floor and making trips to the store.

If you press the start button and you only hear one click or a series of clicks without trying to start, 95% of the time, it's just your battery needs recharging or replacement. If your battery checks out, you need to test your starter solenoid then test your starter. Make sure you get your battery load tested which Autozone or Oreilly auto do it for free. Or you can pick up your own load tester here: amzn.to/3uyJSIX This is the exact same one I've used for years and I LOVE it. If you get your own, you can test it without leaving your house or removing your battery from the bike. It can also test car batteries and will even test your starting system, charging system, and even shows you overall battery health. Highly recommended for everyone honestly. I hope this helps!

@TheMotorcycleBoss3 жыл бұрын
@@sunnietahmas4960 glad I could help you find your issue! Keep in mind that sometimes if your battery gets that low, a recharge maybe only a temporary solution. Even if it shows 12.6v, the voltage may drop too low to run your fuel pump or other devices while starting and it will show it's face later on in the form of you possibly getting stuck. That's why a load test is always recommended whenever your battery needs a recharge. It will tell you the true Cold-Cranking Amps of your battery and it will tell you the life of your battery. You don't want the CCA's to be less than what the battery is rated for. But glad you found your issue.

Good Vid, MB, thanks... but one thing is still unclear.....So, as I like to hear the fuel pump charge the lines ... I flip the start switch to on, flip the key, watch the display and listen..... " Weeeeeee " 2 seconds, then the ECU turns off the diagnostics lights. then I press start,.... Wuhh Wuhh. Bruummmm..... So why did the guy in the forum figure that the Fuel pump was shutting off? To me that sounds like a fuel line pressure switch issue...... Once you hit the Start switch at the end of the charge cycle, you would have full pressure to start the bike , but then you should be working off vacuum, not injector pressure when the bike started and when the injectors open , you are pulling rather than pushing fuel ...??? The fuel pressure switch should stop the pump until you rev the engine ....
@Yamahog3 жыл бұрын
I missed a point here When the fuel line pressure drops below a specified value, due to idling, revving or riding. the fuel pump will engage and keep the injector inlet pressure up..... not shut off when it reaches set-point for line pressure......
@TheMotorcycleBoss3 жыл бұрын
@@Yamahog from what I can tell, since the injectors require power to send fuel, the power commander is the middle man between the ECU signal and the injectors. When the ECU sends the signal for the injectors to fire, the Power commander intercepts the signal in order to modify it. However; if the fuel pump is no longer priming, the power commander loses power as well and can't relay the signal to the injectors. (That's my understanding anyway) However; I feel like this isn't entirely the issue I have. Apparently the fuel pump relay tends to go out on these bikes pretty frequently and I think it finally took a dump. I have more tests to run to figure it out but I'll see about updating this video in the comments or description once the issue is discovered.

@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
I understand where you are coming from. The power commander wasn't the issue. It's the bike itself. Since the power commander only receives power through the fuel injectors, this would've been an issue regardless of there being a power commander to my knowledge. It's just the way the bike's ECU is programmed and you would most likely need to flash the ECU in order to permanently fix this "issue". All in all it isn't a problem. Just a weird quirk of the bike design. Typically you are supposed to allow the fuel pump to prime completely before starting it but with this bike, I guess Yamaha wants you to start it as it primes.

naturally no info in removing the tank, nobody has that simple video on youtube. good video though. Manual says remove neck covers first but the tank is in the way of the 1/4 turn fastners that hold the neck covers on.

I haven't had the need to fully remove the gas tank on this bike yet. But all I had to do after undoing the tank bolts under the seat was to remove the 2 hoses in the back. It's more of a pain than some other bikes but it isn't too hard.

no of that was necessary. Fuel Spark Air Compression. That's all. 1 ) Check spark with screwdriver, 2) Check Fuel flow , 3) Check compression with your thumb 4) Check engine is getting Air.
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
Checking spark and compression was easily done with starter fluid. Which also isolates fuel. Air was an obvious one to see, hear, and check. And timing wasn't the issue since it would run perfectly when it started. I already did all of these checks beforehand. It just came down to the specific characteristics of the electrical system of the bike and the power commander having a time limit. Everything you mentioned checked out already but the time limit was the only unkown issue. Only other logical issue to check at that point would be a wonky MAF sensor, ECU, or TPS.

Never blow air INTO the chamber as you might be blowing debris inside the intake. VACUUM...

Not as big of a deal as you are making it out to be. Engines can be quite dirty without issue. Not to say you should disregard any cleanliness at all. However; blowing out the spark plug area before removal is standard practice to prevent any debris from falling inside the cylinders upon removal of the spark plug. It would actually be a bad idea NOT to blow it out before removing.

I have this same issue. Only my bike will not stay on after 1 minute or so.
@TheMotorcycleBoss3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you have to watch your fuel pressure. Could be a fuel pump or fuel filter issue.
@mr.jeffreyparker81243 жыл бұрын
Wow, first you should have started with PC. Me, I hate those, not worth the hassle. In the end, this was misleading because you didn't identify you had a PC. Maybe next time.
@TheMotorcycleBoss3 жыл бұрын
Lol. I ended up finding out the PC was only a small part of the issue. The real underlying issue was simply battery related. The battery had enough voltage to prime the fuel pump but when I would engage the starter, the voltage would drop just enough to no longer allow the fuel pump to work while having enough energy for a solid crank. I suspected this issue after the trick I learned in this video started not working a few days later. I performed a load test on the battery and it failed being at 68% remaining life. Swapped out the battery and now I haven't had a starting issue since. So technically we were both wrong here. Maybe you'll get it right next time...
