You are a saint. Thank you for sharing this and saving many people many hours of frustration. :) I may be one of them lol. My bike wouldn't start this morning, had to drive the truck to work. I didn't get far into testing but first thing I checked is the battery and it's good. I suspect this is the issue because of how it happened, I was turning over then stopped. In hindsight, my ignition has been acting kind of finicky, sometimes working and sometimes not and cutting out. I'm looking forward to trying this today when I get home!

I realize now that the starter button used to have a metal on metal feel..and one day trying to figure it out I realized that the starter button felt gummy and that was unusual... Then I saw this video and just kind of connected the dots and sure enough it was a bug smashed between the metal surfaces

@jimzastawniak14072 жыл бұрын
I've suggested this fix dozens of times to guys with the same problem. Plus in the preceding video I noticed you wired the start cable up in reverse, while it works on the aftermarket unit, I don't think it will work correctly on the OEM start relay, but I never tried it to find out. The OEM part is also $102, I've seen those Amazon parts actually melt.

This, This video here. TL:DR - weeks of frustration last year solved in an hour's work this year. All last year I had intermittent issues where my 2003 V-Star 1100 would start, I'd get where I was going, run into the store and and sometimes, the bike wouldn't start when I'd come out. My wife had to come boost me a few times so I replaced the battery, the fuel pump because it wasn't reliably kicking in, I brought it to a shop that told me it was because my battery cables weren't tight enough (blah blah blah). I thought it was the relay, so I put the bike into storage for the winter and spent the winter doing my research looking for a replacement. My wife was either compassionate or fed up and picked up a Haynes manual for me for Christmas, and by the time I found Page 8.14, Section 18 (Handlebar Switch Check) and its semi related information to check for corrosion on the connectors I had already come across your video series (specifically the relay video). Putting two and two together, I re-watched _this_ video and decided this would be where I started this year before ordering the relay. I took the bike out of storage a few hours ago and I took the switch off the handlebars to take a closer look. Lo and behold, not only was there some corrosion on the kill switch contacts, there was also remnants of a spider nest in there. In about an hour of work, I had the disassembly, cleaning and reassembly done, and now the fuel pump kicks in each time I tested it. I don't subscribe to many channels, but it's the least I can do for you, and thank you.

That's hilarious! I ran against the same deal, well just about, and went to handlebar switch first also, then solenoid, knowing that i could jump, start and run.. I didn't go through all your teardown or tests, knowing it ran. though difference being my pump runs and my kill switch kills the motor when switched up. This will be interesting, knowing it worked till i goofed with the throttle.. nice to see you found yours, ty for vid.. i put my bike away for 4 years till now.. lol stay tuned.. :-)

I was given a goodpiece of advice back in the 1980’s when I started riding. The advice was: do not ever use the killswitch on the right side switchblock. Only use the ignition seitch to turn on and odd the bike. The kiilswitch is for emergency shutdown ONLY. It cannot handle the voltage that the ignition switch can. You will eventually be stuck unable to start your bike.
@broughtonparkade5381 Жыл бұрын
Leve it in the on position and use the key. The contacts will weld together if you don’t
@broughtonparkade5381 Жыл бұрын
See, the problem comes when you use it to shutdown the bike, turn off the key and leave the run switch in the off position. Next ride, you hop on, turn on the key and then use that run switch- it was not designed to turn the bike on- it can’t take the voltage. It needs to be in the on position before you turn the key.

@@Dubsack OK, I touched both terminals with a needle nose pliers to make a circuit and the bike started so I knew the problem was not the starter, battery, or fuse block. I removed and disassembled the ignition/killswitch assembly on my right-side handlebar. (Have your camera phone ready to take a picture of the inside of the switch.) My actual problem was the little cone shaped spring in back of the red starter button got oxidized and tarnished. I hit both sides of the spring and the contact it rests on with some fine sandpaper. You have a little spring under the 3-point brass contacts. Then between the red piece and the white piece there is another spring the same size as the contacts spring and a ball bearing. The ball bearing sits on top of the spring and the spring lays in the little slot in the red piece. Hope this helps.
