Diagnosing front END NOISE, Toyota Sienna BAD Linkage

These links have a hex provision for the top stud. You hold the stud still using the hex bit, and use a box-end wrench to turn the nut off. I'm sure you'd still need heat, but better than hoping the visegrips will hold something round. btw... this is a REALLY CLEAN car for that age; I have to deal with Minnesota rust and grime. I replaced mine with Autozone parts, and they went bad quickly. I had to go to a different parts chain to get a set that has GREASABLE ends. If I"m not mistaken, those same parts had a regular hex provision on the backsidethat you could hold with a wrench.

I cleaned the threads with a wire wheel in my dremel tool then liquid wrench and my cordless impact & bam!

This video help with diagnosing front end noise on my 2008 Toyota Sienna. I thought it was control arm bushing noise, but it was the sway bar linkage, exactly as shown by RB. A couple years ago, my wife hit a pothole and broke a strut. Looks like the linkage was damaged as well.

Still getting a creaking noise when turning at low speeds. Can't hear it at high speeds. I just replaced those links as they were buggered up. Also sway bar bushings. And just did the ball joints. Tie rod ends.

@@RBTheMechanic no but I recently replaced the bearings of the shock including the towers. It was making a crunchy sound. One mechanic put it upside down I think.

I have 2009 Toyota Sienna I love the car it got 117k miles runs great so here’s the thing $1000 dosent sound good for this repair it would be cheap parts and I would say good parts would be around $12-1300 and who’s doing the labor? Anyways if ur transmission is good and strong then I would go for the repairs

I was able to do this, but did not have a torch, I used my 4 1/2" angle grinder to cut the nut off instead just be careful of the sparks

I am having a clunking noise at low speeds on bumps. Nothing on the highway and the van still drives straight. I tried the wiggle test with the suspension components and cant find a definite cause. Struts and sway bay links are new last year. No play in the tire when the front end is lifted.

My 2006 Sienna makes a creaking sound when going over speed bumps slowly. The sound does not occur while turning either direction and it seems the weight of the vehicle causes this when the suspension is compressed. What could it be?

It’s struts links or bushing related u might have to check for plays

Hey bro i have 2011.toyota sienna and its making a loud pop everytime i turn the wheel all the way to the left i allready inspect the ball joint, drive shaft, control arm and the sway bar link and everything seems to be fine do you have any idea what it.was? I do notice though that the.sruts are squeeking when hits a bump on the road but im not sure if it has something to do with the poping noise when im making the left turn😔

I have that pop sound on my sienna it’s the strut mount bearing going bad the ball bearing inside are dryer up so u can put ur had on the strut mount have some one turn and and u will feel it

It can be control arms. Check the whole front end

Yesterday my mechanic replaced them in my sienna 2006 and now the noise is different, when I do the U turn or go all the way to the left side if fells like something cracks in there. Please give me and idea what could be because I spend money on arm control, motor/transmission mounting and just did links. When I drive 50mph the noises sound like the way you said it in the video.

The steering wheel wiggle and rattles when i drive over rough roads or potholes. Also, when i enter the driveway, which is slightly raised from the roadway, it makes a clink noise that seems to come from the left front side of the car, right next to the strut mounts. It gives you the impression that something is working in tension. Third and last, when driving in highway over 70mph, the steering wheel feels lighter and it is not very stable compared to when driving around 30-40 mph. I have checked sway bar bushes, links, ball joints, strut mounts and it seems to be pretty stiff, no play. Any idea what it might be?

Where did u buy the parts from they key to doing good job is to have good parts after market online parts are never good they advertised good but never are good also rebuilt axles are terrible idea

Ok well first recheck if every thing is tight ... if all good then since u did everything do the struts and strut mount as well it should resolve the issue

Not sure what type of noise ur explains to me. Might be ur bearing. If ur tries look bad change the tires first other wise it will just be confusing to diagnose bearing noise with bad tires

Andres Bautista yeah you can drive with broke or detached linkage or try to tape it up so it don’t get stuck hit the axle the linkage is about $120 good part and labor

If u replace it with new one and it has greasing fittings u can add some most likely it probably pre packed but give it a touch with greasing gun Just incase it’s empty

Hey RB, I have an 08 sienna that when I give it gas at 43mph or faster the car shakes or shimmy . I had the tire rotated and balanced twice and still there. What can it be? I have heard the even cv axles can cause that .. Is there a way to check that while on the car in drive way? I know a couple questions in one. Thanks

I’m not sure what your feeling I would have to test drive it can you make a video and posit it up I’ll see what it sound like or what ur feeling other than that try checking axle u can wiggle the av boot areas see if u feel anything un normal .. but honestly it prolly Show any signs a ways try to make a video it can be transmission hesitating check ur fluid level

@@RBTheMechanic even the passenger can feel the car shimmy or vibrate. Once you let off the gas the car is fine. ATF is full. does not make any noise . I will see about a video in a couple of days . Thanks

Not sure what the real cure was as I did both at the same time but the driver side rotor was worn real bad and a little warped . But now it drives like it used to.

Laura Robinson wow that’s loud but it sounds like the strut mount Usually this sound with be strut or the strut mount also can be caused by linkage and busing ... but this is really loud you might be able to see a moving part if u lift it up please have it checked can be dangerous

@@RBTheMechanic I finally got it fixed at Firestone and they said the it was the cv axle that was bent so had then change both out. 850 dollars later but van sounds way better. Thank you!
