Diagnosing Ticking Lifter 2015 GM V8 Engine Knock Sound

This l83 had a lifter tick so I show the steps I took to diagnose the noise. This was an engine knock sound that I had to isolate. Check if the rocker arm functions correctly while cranking it over with the starter for more than 3 times in a row. The lifter could also be spun, you can determine this by looking at the side of the lifter. To see the side of the lifter you need to pull the VLOM and clean out the oil tower of the suspected lifter with cleaner and shop air. Once cleaned you can look down the oil tower and if you see a hole in the lifter it is not spun. If however you see only shiny metal or a flat surface then the lifter has spun due to a bad plastic lifter guide. When this happens you will need to replace the camshaft and all lifters. This would be a good time to do a full AFM/DOD delete where you remove all AFM components and replace them with non AFM components.

@@CrazedPerformanceRepair yea I did leak down of cylinder it’s good , rockers seem to be moving like they suppose too, I Need to put dial indicator on rockers they both look alright Visually. But my compression test was little weird first time I test it only got 90 psi then retest and got 150psi then went compared other cylinders with no miss fires codes and got same 150psi. Dealer wants sell me whole new engine!

@@davidcallahan5157 be sure to crank it over with the starter relay jumped while watching the rockers. the rockers might work fine for the first four or five times and then suddenly stop working on one or two of them.

I have same issue. But I also only have 50% oil pressure I’m supposed to have could this be because of my bad lifter I’ve replaced oil pump/ and oring. screen in vlom deleted oil pressure relief valve in pan. Still only 20ib on startup 30 at rpm and when it warmed up drops to 0 at idle

Great video. I have a very similar sound on my 2011 Silverado. For whatever reason though it gets quieter when the engine is at operating temp. You can still hear it, but it's more of a light click at that point and I'm positive it's not an exhaust leak. I look forward to seeing your next video on this for the results.

Awesome video sir, question: Can you use dial indicator on AFM lifters to see if total lift vs another non ticking AFM cylinder is equal? Or because the AFM lifter needs oil pressure you'd have to run it first for 5 mins then do one's dial indicator test? Thanks!

The AFM cam profile is slightly different so comparing it to non AFM isn't practical. Besides that the AFM portion of the lifter only sees oil pressure when the system is activated. Otherwise, it acts the same as a standard lifter.

Would you be able to turn the lifter 1/4 turn to quiet the noise down? Or use Lucas oil stabilizer? My 4.3l Silverado has the same sound, but on the passenger side

No, lifter can't be turned. Lucas might help some but it's a band aid over a invected wound.

I have a 2015 with a similar noise. The dealer said it is most likely a pitted cam lobe and recommended replacing all 8 lifters, the VLOM and camshaft to the tune of just over $6000!! My PT warranty was out this past Dec but I only have 60k on my Sierra SLT 6.2L. The dealer initially told me I was SOL but I called GM and they said there is a grace period of 12mo/12k miles after the OEM warranty to which they offer cost assistance with such a larger repair. So after many phone calls with GM ( who, by the way, have been great to deal with compared to the dealers) they are going to go 60/40% on the job. So with the warranty pricing it dropped to just over $4200 and I may be into it for around $1300. My question is had GM fixed the issue that causes the lifters to fail by enlarging the oil holes or something? I typically hold on to my trucks for 10 yrs or so and would hate to have to got thru this again. I switched to GMC from Ford (2008 f150) as I was sick of all the "It's a FORD thing" and hate to see that I'm right back there with "a GM thing" I guess if I got a RAM it would get the "Dodge/MOPAR thing" problems so I just can't win.

I replaced the cam and lifters on a 17 chevy 1500 silverado the old cam was eat up on # 8 this is a 5.3L LT engine after getting it back together with without delete stock now the ticking moved to drivers side and is loader then before it has a code for knock sensor. Brand new lifters bad ?

My problem with GM is these trucks actually aren't bad. They have some serious potential. You got to delete the AFM put a solid cam and lifters in it. Get rid of the VLOM assembly get it tuned. Call it a day but you also got to get a new torque converter. Maybe a few other things beef up that 6L80 if you could do those things you know up the pressure and get rid of the slipping cuz those things slip like Insanity. It's ridiculous. It's just why they wear out. GM is aggravating me because all those things don't really need to be there and the truck could be so much better but those are planned failures and they just suck at hiding it. You know GM is blatant about their plan. Failures. Ford is better at hiding that stuff you know. Also, they're better at hiding things behind things so you need a special tool or it takes way longer to get at. They're better at doing that and they're better at hiding their planned obsolescence GM sucks at it. Horribly not to mention those 14 through 18 trucks have serious potential. Like I said, if you delete that AFM system and beef up the tranny you could probably run them $250,000 mi easy. I could see those motors going $300,000 mi if they didn't have failure points. I mean honestly, if they just put better lifters in them they probably wouldn't break at all in the AFM would be fine, you know?

I have a 2014 silverado 1500 with 5.3l im at 125k miles and it has that same noise but my truck sarted burning oil and smoking from tail pide would that be cauby lifters?

That's the first year of Direct injection. If you have direct injection it could be lifters and could have something to do with the vacuum pump. Noise is likely lifter but pump might be oil consumption. You will have to do testing. The pump could even be causing the noise. Get out the stethoscope.

How long can an engine in this state continue to run before it fails catastrophically? This issue appears to happen to these GM engine models regardless of how perfect the oil maintenance was. Imho defective design by GM

I don't think it had any if I recall correctly. Had a history misfire on cylinder 3 though under misfire counter.

The Range device will help prevent from some AFM failures but not this particular type of failure.

@@JamesValentineBaja1000 nope, plenty of tuners are able to disable this function on the vehicle but very few will be able to right to the ECM to disable it permanently. The best read/write tuner on the market is the MPVI2 by HPtuners, it’s a simple drop down option on their software, plus you can enable the flex fuel sensor if you wanted to put a kit on it to run e85. You can change everything from fueling, spark advance, redline, and even transmission shift points with the HPtuner but those are the two things most people buy it for.

All vehicle makes have there issues. The gm trucks are ok but it is best to shut off the AFM as soon as its out of warranty if you have one.

It's trivial to disable AFM. There are at least 3 cheap and easy ways of doing that. The other potential issues you mention are rare. Just avoid the first few years of the 8-speed transmission.

@@mph5896 You do realize that GM sells over 1 million trucks, SUV's, and sports cars each year that are equipped with either the 4.3 5.3 or 6.2, right? Even if there was a miniscule 1% failure rate, that's at least 10,000 vehicles with an issue. That causes it to look like these engines are failing constantly because there are so many vehicles sold each year with these engines. A guy once claimed that Toyota Tundras are rock solid reliable and rarely have problems because there were half as many complaints for transmission issues compared with Ford, GM, or FCA. The problem with their logic was that Toyota only sells a little over 100k Tundras each year. While GM or Ford might have twice as many complaints for transmission issues, they both sell nearly 10 times as many trucks. In other words, at face value, it looked like Ford and GM were having tons more transmission issues, but their issue rate was actually far far less than the rate of issues with the Tundra's transmission. My point is, perception doesn't always match reality.

It would be interesting to see how much ferrous (camshaft/cam follower) metal the engine is making during the last oil change cycle. Maybe try opening the oil filter and use a very strong magnet on the pleats and report your findings? J

Mine to 2016 I got no misfire no check. Engine light runs great but there's metal in my catch can The last two times I emptied it. There's a little bit of metal flakes in the bottom so I'm assuming that's a lifter s******* out. It's just a matter of time I guess

Might just be a belt. Pull belt off to test it, start it and if its gone then replace the belt.

It's a 2014 LT, but it doesn't matter it can happen to any of them. The future videos to come will matter some that it's a LT though.

Definitely not though, that engine won't be equipped with AFM. You might have a broken exhaust manifold bolt creating a gasket leak though

Maybe all the metals getting caught in my catch can that's why it's not in my oil pan still not good but there's no misfire yet. I'm sure one day I'm just going to get a miss and a tick then I'll have to get it fixed. It's under warranty until 120,000 miles or 5 years. I add an extended warranty which actually worked out because the transmission just went like 3 months ago and they replaced it completely free of charge along with oil lines, cooler lines and trans cooler lines. So maybe the motor will go and they'll either replace both banks or lifters and a camshaft or one bank. Or they'll give me a whole new motor and maybe I just run it. You know delete that freaking system and I plan on beefing up this transmission already cuz since it's brand new

Unfortunately there really isn't a way to prevent it due to its design. You can clean it out every so often though if you have a induction cleaner kit and the chemical. You can use the sprayer portion of a kit like this amzn.to/2JGUtPU The sprayer is in the bottom left corner of the box in the main picture.

It now has gone into lawsuit. All lifter fails are now covered at the dealership. Lifter 7 collapsed in my 2015 Suburban costing $4,500.

​@@CoasterBucketMedia Unfortunately I don't think this lawsuit will go anywhere. They are suing gm for the wrong thing. The lawsuit claims lifter is at fault. It's actually due to lack of oil pressure during activation at the lifter in 95% of the cases. The lifter is actually the symptom not the problem. So if GM has half a brain this is a easy lawsuit to defend against. Besides like he said, it's not a safety issue. HOWEVER, GM is rather stupid and I highly doubt they actually realize the actual issue. Now if the people filing, had filed against the things causing the failure related to oil pressure its another story. they might get somewhere. Not sure it would be a big win but may gain some ground. Wish that guy shared the case number in that video.

@@CrazedPerformanceRepair my ex drives a 2015 Silverado and had the same issue same lifter. I think it all relates to a frame ground issue. If the voltage drops then things don’t operate properly. I had a gremlin in the Suburban that the dealer couldn’t figure out. I upgraded my frame ground and all my issues went away. Glitchy steering, voltage drops, door locks up and down in gear, Radio shut off etc… All issue’s were remedied after adding a 4g ground wire to the frame.

Welcome to most modern vehicles. The new coyote for example has a timing belt inside the engine that sits under the oil level inside the oil pan to drive the oil pump. We shall see if the compound holds up but I wouldn't trust it lol. These engineers should be forced to have 10years of mechanic experience before being aloud to design cars.
