Yup, always recommend the motor be replaced when the run cap has failed or has been running below its rated tolerances. Notate the customer's replacement refusal on the invoice so when the motor fails in 2 months your @ss is covered.

Tomon8tor I've been burnt from this before. Change both no call backs. Try to be a nice guy and replace cap and 2 weeks later they are calling back a no heat and they think your an idiot scammer

@@RockoRocko-rz7kx yup it's often difficult to convince the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" customer though and they think you're trying to scam them for a new motor.

I replaced both the blower motor and capacitor, when I turn the furnace back on, the fan immediately starts or starts humming. The furnace then kicks on heats for about 30 seconds to a minute and then the furnace shuts down but fan continues to run or hum. I feel the motor and it is getting hot so I shut off power right away. Any suggestions? I triple checked the wiring when I replaced the motor and the only extra wire I had that wasn't on the old motor was the brown and white wire that maybe needs to run back to the cap? I have the single brown running back to the cap. Limit switch? Great videos, glad I found your page. Thanks

Sounds like the cap is not properly wired. Most replacement motors have a brown and a brown with white stripe wire that goes to the cap. GFM

I have a Goodman GMP furnace. The fan motor in my furnace was damaged by a power surge. The reason I know that is that I was home in the room next to the furnace closet when the power surge occurred. The fan motor never ran right after the power surge. The motor would start and run for a while but would get hot and kick off on the overload. I tested the cap and it was OK. I replaced the motor and the capacitor and I installed a GE whole house surge protector in my electrical panel.

capacitors that say "protected" will go open circuit if it overheats or shorts internally. So protected more or less means it has an internal current/thermal fuse that opens in a fault condition.

Can't you replace the capacitor, and then check the motor to see if it is over amping as compared to its rating plate? If the amperage is high then replace it, but if it's still runs within spec, I would continue to use it. Another question, Is that a start capacitor or a run capacitor? From the way you talk, it must be a run capacitor as you say it will run, but over heats. Generally it's heat that kills the windings as the varnish in windings burns and deteriorates, It's basically the lack of proper insulation of the windings between one another that causes over amping.. I had a tool that could check the quality of the winding insulation. Another test is the sniff test. Do the windings smell burned? I say start it up with a new capacitor, see if the motor runs properly and check to see if it's over amping. If it over amps change it, or perhaps as someone else said, it could be time for a new furnace. Since this is a junker. I'm going to assume it was junked out due to the motor problem and who know what other issues? My old furnace was a belt drive. In some respects I think that may be a better way to go, although it was kind of noisy compared to the new one which sounds more like a jet engine.

Well if you leave off replacing the motor and it fails within 2 months that customer will want it fixed for free. But the motor might last for years. Best thing to do is sell them on a new box :-)

Many customers want it fixed as cheaply as possible and can't afford a new furnace. The only time I installed a used blower motor was when one customer told me that he had just lost his job and couldn't afford a new motor or furnace. I did have an exact replacement fan unit that came out of an identical used furnace and it worked great. The customer was very happy and I told him no warranty on the part and wrote it on the repair order.
