Is your furnace blower motor not working and there is no air coming out of your vents? Perhaps your blower motor has burnt out and you need a new one. Or maybe it is just simply not getting any power therefore not turning on. In this video I show you how you can check if your HVAC blower motor is bad or if it is the control board that is defective. Be safe when you perform these checks and make sure you have the power off when touching any uninsulated parts of a wire/connector. Also, there are many different kinds of furnaces and control boards so do not take my example as law. There can be variations to how the wires are hooked up.

Our upstairs AC unit was making a loud buzzing noise and there were no cold blowing from our registers. Stopped power to the unit assessed the problem squirrel cage was hard to hand turn…pulled out to find motor bearings were burnt. Meanwhile an electrical storm rolled through our area last month during that event we decided to turn off the down stairs unit. Soon after the storm cleared went turned on the unit with no success. I did everything possible to get it going again. We called the HVAC tech and was quoted $1500 for a new motor…..ahhhhh what? After a few weeks of you tube videos I always came back to yours. My upstairs unit motor bearings were burnt so replaced the motor and capacitors for $179 and 3 hours of my time. Now to trouble shoot the downstairs unit repeated all the hacks on resetting to no avail. Back to your video……had the jumper by pass the board and VOILÀ….AC functional now I need to shop around for a new circuit board. Thank you so much. DIY Dude

OUTSTANDING VIDEO! I'm no slouch, but I know nothing about HVAC. Friday night of Memorial Day weekend My 80 yo mother here to visit and the AC quit. It was 85 degrees in her room. I watched your video, I was able to diagnose the issue easily (it was the mother board) and was able to jump the mother board to keep the fan running and cool the house since everything else was working. One of the best how too videos I've ever watched. Simple, concise with great solutions. Thanks man! Gave you a thumbs up and subscribed.

What should be be the trouble shooting sequence if the blower doesn't work, even with the ON position on the thermostat. AND, compressor and condenser fan won't start.
@PROJECT.LUKE.ONE.75
@PROJECT.LUKE.ONE.75 4 жыл бұрын
With your thermostat calling for either heat or cool (for cool, the outside unit should be running), thd G wire should then turn on the blower motor at the furnace. If it's not, check the motor for voltage. To check for power (voltage), start by checking where your fan wires go into the control board. The black wire is normally high stage, which goes to cooling; heat is normally low stage, which goes to heating. Depending on which AC season your testing for, you will pull that wire off. Next, find where your common wire is coming from the motor (usually labeled circ. or circulator) and pull that wire off the control board as well. Place one lead on each spade that you've pulled a wire from. There should be a 120v present. If you have 0 volts when the fan should be on, then the problem is a defective control board. If you do have 120v present, and the fan isn't coming on, then the blower motor is bad. To test without a meter, find the wire for line voltage coming into the control board usually coming from the door switch) disconnect it, and depending on which AC season your testing for, pull off the high or low stage wire and bypass the control board by connecting the two wires together. If the blower comes on, the control board is bad. If it doesn't come on, the blower motor is bad. To temporarily get by with cooling or heating until the board is installed, you can connect the two wires disconnected wires to a spade splitter (bending the split) and connect the other end into the line voltage on the control board. This will send power directly to the motor through the power switch, bypassing the control board.

Couldn't a bad limit switch be keeping the blower motor from coming on? My blower won't come on with a/c or heat. Just replaced the capacitor and nothing. My flashing led light says limit switch fault, but shouldn't the blower motor still come on in a/c mode. The led reads normal operation with the a/c on. Also reads normal operation for the heat when first turned on. The burners fire up, but no blower motor. After about 3 mins the burners will turn off, and the led reads limit switch fault.

I really liked this comment, I will quote it, it's important: "I realized the motor bushings were out of oil, and it couldn't overcome the initial friction to start, as it was hard to turn and the motor was very hot if you did get it to run. Anyway I saved 175 bucks on a new motor by taking it apart and re-oiling the felt pads on the two bushings in the blower motor. It would not be hard for some people to do if you are mechanically inclined. Some motors may have oil ports, if they do I would use them."

I love your videos, and wanted to add something that happened to me, I'm not an HVAC tech. My motor would not start, even after I heard the relay click on, so one would assume the start capacitor. This theory was also reinforced when I had to hand start the fan (not recommended if you don't know about this stuff), but it still had trouble starting and I realized the motor bushings were out of oil, and it couldn't overcome the initial friction to start, as it was hard to turn and the motor was very hot if you did get it to run. Anyway I saved 175 bucks on a new motor by taking it apart and re-oiling the felt pads on the two bushings in the blower motor. it's quite possible the motor start capacitor is fully charged 1. you can get a real jolt 2, if you connect the capacitor at this state to your meter, the meter will be fried. You should try and discharge the capacitor before anything else. Touching an insulated handle screw driver to the bare metal contacts will do this BUT it is really bad for the capacitor to discharge this fast. you should use something like a 5k 5 watt resistor.

When my furnace calls for heat it goes through the proper cycles and when it’s time for the blower motor to kick on it does kick on however after about 15 minutes the motor gets so hot it shuts itself off. I replaced the capacitor thinking that was it but it’s still doing the same thing ,now if I let the furnace cool and turn the switch off for 10 seconds then back on it will work again for 15 minutes until the motor gets so hot it shuts down again. Do you think the motor is bad ? Is there some safety device kicking the blower motor off when it gets so hot? Thank You BTW: Great videos like and subscribe everybody !!!

This is incorrect actually.. if you do this you wont be sending a 24v signal to the outdoor unit. By disconnecting the line voltage from the circuit board, your 24V transformer is not getting any power, therefore the outdoor condenser contactor will not pull in. Only the blower will be powered.

Thank you for these videos. They are very well put together. My blower motor works 8 out of 10 times. My blower motor will come on if I turn the power off, rotate the motor slightly (1/16th of a turn). Then turn power back on. I can also make it come on by smacking the side of furnace near where the blower lies. I have tested the cap and it appears to be fine. The blower motor spins freely with no resistance at all. Could I assume that the motor has a dead spot and is need of replacement? Or should I get the blower motor rewound?

I would start by bypassing the thermostat at the furnace control board and see if the furnace starts up then. (jumper R to W) If the furnace turns on, then the problem lies in the thermostat or the wiring going to the thermostat.. Here is a video on how to bypass the thermostat at the board if you need it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ69lGpsqsuHhLs If it does not turn on, then it could be a few things... It would help if the furnace was blinking an error code. I would take the furnace doors off and tape shut the door switch. That will help locate the LED light.

Is there somewhere you have a link to buy the splitter you show connecting the two female wires to the male? It’s Sunday so I went to Ace, Lowe’s and Home Depot with no luck finding it. I was able to isolate the problem to the control board so yeah and thanks🎉😂!

You could simply snip the wires and wire nut them together too and then use a pigtail (third wire) to hook up to the male terminal.

Love your vids, thank you. I have typical issue. Furnace comes on, blower motor hums and heats up...doesnt spin SOME times. Start manually...it will get going. I started with cheapest, capacitor. About same results, worked for a day maybe. If a motor is bad, wouldnt it not work at all? Obviously its getting power, new capacitor should be giving kick...would a failing motor work "some" or with a manually bump? Blower fan spins free, no binding also.

Thanks, you’ve helped me with two furnaces in two different houses. Both had blower motor issues. I was able to confirm this latest one with the “Hotwire” technique. I made a simple jumper wire with blade connectors and just plugged it in, switched the unit on with the door switch repressed and heard buuuuuuuuzzzzzzz. No spinning but it did get hot! Bingo bad blower motor. Now to replace it 😢 Thanks again!

I have a blower motor just making a loud humming, not spinning. I checked the run cap and only got 3.4 mf when it was supposed to be 5 mf. I replaced the cap (new one tested at 4.9 mf) and it still won’t run. I even gave the squirrel cage a hard spin and then engaged the interlock switch and it won’t stay running. Motor is probably 35 years old plus. I suspect that I might have a bad motor? Maybe I lost a winding?

Great videos, thank You. My problem is the blower motor turning ON-OFF for short cycle, the outside unit keep running while the inside unit is going ON for 1 minutes then OFF for a few seconds and so. Is the blower motor going bad or the board? thanks again
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 5 жыл бұрын
You would need a meter to be able to confirm which it is.. If the motor is still getting power when it turns off like that, then you know the motor is bad or the capacitor for it is weak. (if you have a variable speed motor, that would be harder to check as you would need an adapter to check ECM motors) If the power drops off to the motor when it turns off, then either the board is bad or there is some safety switch that is getting tripped. Like a condensate overflow switch for example.

You just need to get power to the outdoor unit. The low voltage. You can try jumping R to Y on the thermostat strip on the control board or you can hook up the two thermostat wires coming from the air conditioner directly to the secondary side of the transformer. (24v side)

Jumped R and G on the control board. I hear 2 clicks approximately 2 seconds apart but the blower would not come on. The fan cage spins freely. Could it be the motor? Although the motor was replaced less than a year ago. Could it be the capacitor? Thanks,

If need be, could you keep the blower hot wired through out the night to get through the night? I absolutely froze my butt off last night because I think my capacitor is bad.

Yes you can hot wire it but if the capacitor is bad, even if the motor is hot wired it will not run. Hot wiring is only applicable if the board or fan relay is bad and does not send power to the fan motor.

My unit is a gas / electric outside unit, the blower motor quit, everything else seems to be ok. Problem, all video's show an indoor furnace and a fan with a capacitor. My blower fan doesn't have a capacitor and i'm sure that it doesn't matter to a pro, but i have found these type units on every help section video and not one package unit like mine that shows how to see if it's the fan motor, which i pulled out trying to locate the capacitor and it doesn't seem to have any looseness, wobble, dirty, rusty or otherwise. The unit is only 5 years old. But no one so far has shown this type unit being tested to see if it's the blower or the circuit board. Looks like i'll end uip calling an over priced hvac person to test it and tell me what's bad.

Hi. My blower works. It's just intermittent. Sometimes I have to reset the furnace switch once to get it to act right. Sometimes, like this morning I have to reset the furnace 4x. Would this video still apply? If not what would cause this? I can her the furnace turning on, but the second sound (the blower) is what doesn't always come on

First of all, thank you for your channel. I have learned a lot from your channel. Is the common you mentioned in the video is EAC terminal? you said using ECA terminal or CIR terminal connect with Cool terminal to check it by multimeter. if we get 120V it means motor is bad. if we don’t get 120V it means Control board is bad right?

Thank you! You helped me to fix my A/C fan problem. The inside fan would not come on at all and the A/C unit outside did not come on either. When I turn the control to fan only the fan or blower did not come on. After 4 hours of troubleshooting in a hot attic, I found the control board the problem. After looking closer I found a 5 amp fuse on the board blown. Replace it and guess what. Cold air is now blowing. Might want to add that in your next video. Could possibly save someone 4 hours in the hot sauna. Still could not have done it without your help. I saved at least. 2 bills. Thanks again!

My blower motor isn't working when in heat mode. It works fine with cooling mode. I am getting 120 at the plug for the motor for both heat and cooling wires i.e red and black. I actually cut a extension cord and feed the motor to each separately just to test it. On the cooling wire motor ran fine on the heat wire just hummed. I'm thinking bad motor.

My Central A/C went out here in Michigan's Summer 2019 heat. After discovering that my blower motor was humming, I followed your instruction and found the problem to be the Control Board. Guess what....this is the furnace's 4th control board in 16 years. It gets shorted out because of moisture dripping from the frozen evaporator coils above. Finally figuring out the problem. Half of the home's unused rooms all have their ducts closed. Add that to a neglected filter in the middle of a heat spell and the system will freeze. Got the replacement board from Amazon today and will swap it out...hopefully for the last time ever! Thanks for you awesome tips.

@@WordofAdviceTV I realized the motor bushings were out of oil, and it couldn't overcome the initial friction to start, as it was hard to turn and the motor was very hot if you did get it to run. Anyway I saved 175 bucks on a new motor by taking it apart and re-oiling the felt pads on the two bushings in the blower motor. It would not be hard for some people to do if you are mechanically inclined. Some motors may have oil ports, if they do I would use them.

Nice video. My blower motor isn't coming on.. I cant seem to figure out why my brand new install Goodman MVC96 furnace blower fan shuts off as soon as I switch the thermostat to cool mode but the a/c condenser does start up fine. Because of no blower fan circulation the TXV and service port start freezing up immediately so I cant even get to confirming sub cooling . I have the 2 condenser wires hooked to Y & C on the furnace control board but when i set the thermostat to cool it shut off the blower fan. Blower fan also wont run in the ON or Auto position when set to cool but does work fine in heat and fan only mode.??? Any suggestions would be great. thanks

I find myself in this situation. The air conditioning in my home usually works great. The AC unit outside has the fans spinning and everything but I noticed it would take longer and longer for the cool air to come on and circulate through the house until one day it didn’t come on anymore at all. Now I fear it may be the blower fan as I do hear a small hum when I turn on just the fan but nothing else. I tried turning power off and on again but no luck. I’m thinking the fan motor might have burned out but Im not sure I’m brave enough to mess with all of that voltage. I might have to call someone to take a look

My Goodman 075-3 overheats and blower motor is weak and needs manual assistance to start but then runs constant. I have “open limit switch” code ( main limit open, aux limit open). I replaced the main limit switch and the capacitor and still does exactly the same thing. Whats the auxiliary limit do? The schematic shows the same wires coming from the flame roll out sensors to the auxiliary. I followed it to the outside the blower cage and can’t reach it or I would check it for resistance. Should I disassemble or check something else first? Thanks.

So thankful for your channel. We have an American Standard air conditioning unit electric with natural gas heat. We have had to replace the squirrel cage at least 5 times. The last one taken off was only on about 5-6 months old. The blades were all rusty and loose when taken out. Now the new one is making the same noise...every time its the squirrel cage. So frustrated with this unit!

Nice logical approach in your video. The problem with the furnace blower at my cottage is a bit different in that it works fine when I arrive, but after that it gives a blower fault. When I watch the restart sequence it *almost* gets there, but the fan doesn't get up to full speed and shuts off. After being left alone for another week, it again works perfectly the first time. Turning it off over night is insufficient. Could it be that the capacitor will only work when it has become fully discharged? How would you attack this problem?
