Our upstairs AC unit was making a loud buzzing noise and there were no cold blowing from our registers. Stopped power to the unit assessed the problem squirrel cage was hard to hand turn…pulled out to find motor bearings were burnt. Meanwhile an electrical storm rolled through our area last month during that event we decided to turn off the down stairs unit. Soon after the storm cleared went turned on the unit with no success. I did everything possible to get it going again. We called the HVAC tech and was quoted $1500 for a new motor…..ahhhhh what? After a few weeks of you tube videos I always came back to yours. My upstairs unit motor bearings were burnt so replaced the motor and capacitors for $179 and 3 hours of my time. Now to trouble shoot the downstairs unit repeated all the hacks on resetting to no avail. Back to your video……had the jumper by pass the board and VOILÀ….AC functional now I need to shop around for a new circuit board. Thank you so much. DIY Dude

OUTSTANDING VIDEO! I'm no slouch, but I know nothing about HVAC. Friday night of Memorial Day weekend My 80 yo mother here to visit and the AC quit. It was 85 degrees in her room. I watched your video, I was able to diagnose the issue easily (it was the mother board) and was able to jump the mother board to keep the fan running and cool the house since everything else was working. Jay--9 months ago you really helped me with a problem with my blower and the control board on my Rheem Corsaire AC/furnace unit--you can see our whole dialogue below in the comments. However, the problem re-surfaced again this year in the same unit--namely i checked the air return below the filter and blower and sure enough it was completely full of cold water--luckily this time it hadn't shorted out the control board or fan but i figured i must have a condensate drain issue. There is another AC unit right next to it and i can see the condensate line draining water all day--but not on this unit. Both have similarly plumbed drain lines but unfortunately i cannot access the drain pan to inspect it. So here's what i did: 1. Cut the drain line close to the pan, attempted to vacuum the pan and then rejoined it with very tight plastic tubing over the outside of the PVC so i can see whether anything is coming out of the pan. 2. Vacuumed out and snaked (with a wire puller) the condensate line at the termination, but found no blockages or crud--the line is only about ten feet long in total 3. Installed a T before the P trap (there is a P trap in the line with an uncapped vent after the trap, but the trap was also clean) in order to make sure i could "prime" it as well as occasionally pour bleach into the trap. Now here's the odd thing: If i put the cap on the T before the trap, which is what i understand you're supposed to do, the condensate stops coming out of the drain and the drain pan overflows down the side of the blower, but if i take the cap off the T, the condensate starts running freely all the way out the drain, although i also lose cool air out that vent which i'm guessing means i have a positive pressure system. So what in the world is going on ? I've left the cap off the T and the condensate line is running fine now and there's no water in the return air compartment below the filter. Thoughts ?

Hey Mark! Sorry to hear about the AC troubles! From what you described, it sounds like the drain line gets pulled into a vacuum when the system is running. Having a T with a vent is actually a common procedure. If there is no T, sometimes I will simply drill a little hole on the top of the first elbow as it comes out from the drain pan. So I would just leave it the way you set it up. Sounds good to me :) and it's okay that there is air coming out of it. In fact, if there is no air coming out of it, then that will be a quick indicator for you that the drain line is plugged coming out of the coil.

I read so much stuff that said never to have an open vent before the P trap in a positive pressure system--but ultimately that's what works so i guess i need to have my physicist buddy explain why to me ! I also suppose i don't really need to prime the P trap either--i originally thought i had a negative pressure system and the P trap dried out and allowed air to be sucked into the drain--again, thanks and keep up the great videos

I love your videos, and wanted to add something that happened to me, I'm not an HVAC tech. My motor would not start, even after I heard the relay click on, so one would assume the start capacitor. This theory was also reinforced when I had to hand start the fan (not recommended if you don't know about this stuff), but it still had trouble starting and I realized the motor bushings were out of oil, and it couldn't overcome the initial friction to start, as it was hard to turn and the motor was very hot if you did get it to run. Anyway I saved 175 bucks on a new motor by taking it apart and re-oiling the felt pads on the two bushings in the blower motor. It would not be hard for some people to do if you are mechanically inclined. Some motors may have oil ports, if they do I would use them.

My Central A/C went out here in Michigan's Summer 2019 heat. After discovering that my blower motor was humming, I followed your instruction and found the problem to be the Control Board. Guess what....this is the furnace's 4th control board in 16 years. It gets shorted out because of moisture dripping from the frozen evaporator coils above. Finally figuring out the problem. Half of the home's unused rooms all have their ducts closed. Add that to a neglected filter in the middle of a heat spell and the system will freeze. Got the replacement board from Amazon today and will swap it out...hopefully for the last time ever! Thanks for you awesome tips.

Thank you! You helped me to fix my A/C fan problem. The inside fan would not come on at all and the A/C unit outside did not come on either. When I turn the control to fan only the fan or blower did not come on. After 4 hours of troubleshooting in a hot attic, I found the control board the problem. After looking closer I found a 5 amp fuse on the board blown. Replace it and guess what. Cold air is now blowing. Might want to add that in your next video. Could possibly save someone 4 hours in the hot sauna. Still could not have done it without your help. I saved at least. 2 bills. Thanks again!

Thank you for the furnace videos. Based on your information like feeling for a hot motor, I saved labor cost (est $200) on the furnace motor replacement by replacing the motor myself. This task was my first getting into furnace motor using area. I had by pass certified Hvac Mechanic requirements by looking for local motor supply house as well known ones would not sell to me. I know the motors are available on line but I wanted talk someone locally. Anyway thanks again.

Your videos are great. I have not found a solution yet to my thermostat problem. I have hot wired the RH and W1 to bypass the Honeywell HZ322 damper control panel and Nest thermostats. I can get 24V + at the Nest thermostat and I tried hot wiring the RH and W at the thermostat but it does not call for heat. So any advise?

So thankful for your channel. We have an American Standard air conditioning unit electric with natural gas heat. We have had to replace the squirrel cage at least 5 times. The last one taken off was only on about 5-6 months old. The blades were all rusty and loose when taken out. Now the new one is making the same noise...every time its the squirrel cage. So frustrated with this unit!

Thanks, you’ve helped me with two furnaces in two different houses. Both had blower motor issues. I was able to confirm this latest one with the “Hotwire” technique. I made a simple jumper wire with blade connectors and just plugged it in, switched the unit on with the door switch repressed and heard buuuuuuuuzzzzzzz. No spinning but it did get hot! Bingo bad blower motor. Now to replace it 😢 Thanks again!

I wish you were doing a general test as testing for resistance across the common and your different speeds. Checking the start and run windings, thing like that. You’ve basically explained how to trouble shoot your furnace and your furnace alone. A lot do t have a board. Just relays, transformers and so on. I wish mine was like yours. Make my life 1,000 times easier.

Thanks for your videos. I was able to quickly troubleshoot my blower not working. The squirrel cage moved freely so I pulled the capacitor to test it only to realize that my meter doesn't go down to micro ferrets. I reinstalled the capacitor, re-energized the unit, and turned the thermostat up to 90. The exhaust blower started, the burner ignited as it should and when I heard the unit click to start the blower I just reached in and gave the squirrel cage a little assistance in turning and wala, pushing hot air once again. Amazon will have my new capacitor here tomorrow for $10.00. Now I just need to be a human termostat when my wife wants hot air. Well only for one night. :)

For me, it was the fan switch on the thermostat (on the wall). Flipped it to ON. Things worked. Flipped it back to AUTO and fans still ran as they should, and cut off when they should. YAY! I have heat again. My brother helped me through the troubleshooting. He's a tech for the USPS in Des Moines.

Did they continue to work? I put my fan on, it works, turn it on auto and it stays on and gets to temp then shuts off.. but when turning back on the furnace will light but the fan doesn’t auto turn back on…

Thank you! In this case it is unnecessary. If the motor is getting power yet it does not come on, it's for sure a bad motor. No need for further investigation. In the field this method simply works better and faster for me so I rarely ohm out furnace blower motors.

You're welcome! Sorry to hear about the blower troubles! Either your capacitor is dead or that blower motor is on its way out.. If you have a multimeter, it would be nice to check the capacitor otherwise just start by replacing it. Hopefully you won't need to replace the motor.

In a nutshell, my blower works when set to the ON position, but does not work when set to AUTO. No part of my system has been changed since I purchased the house a year ago and all systems (heat and cooling) have worked flawlessly until two days ago.

So thanks for helping me figuring out that my fan wasn't bad nor my capacitor wasn't the issue. But in my opinion the cutting of wires was not a good idea. By passing the controll board or putting the line with the splitter into the cool will NOT give you A/C!

when you are actually physically showing what you're talking about it makes way more sense then just looking at a power point slide. this is an easier way to learn something in a few minutes then listening to lectures for hours

With your thermostat calling for either heat or cool (for cool, the outside unit should be running), thd G wire should then turn on the blower motor at the furnace. If it's not, check the motor for voltage. To check for power (voltage), start by checking where your fan wires go into the control board. The black wire is normally high stage, which goes to cooling; heat is normally low stage, which goes to heating. Depending on which AC season your testing for, you will pull that wire off. Next, find where your common wire is coming from the motor (usually labeled circ. or circulator) and pull that wire off the control board as well. Place one lead on each spade that you've pulled a wire from. There should be a 120v present. If you have 0 volts when the fan should be on, then the problem is a defective control board. If you do have 120v present, and the fan isn't coming on, then the blower motor is bad. To test without a meter, find the wire for line voltage coming into the control board usually coming from the door switch) disconnect it, and depending on which AC season your testing for, pull off the high or low stage wire and bypass the control board by connecting the two wires together. If the blower comes on, the control board is bad. If it doesn't come on, the blower motor is bad. To temporarily get by with cooling or heating until the board is installed, you can connect the two wires disconnected wires to a spade splitter (bending the split) and connect the other end into the line voltage on the control board. This will send power directly to the motor through the power switch, bypassing the control board.

Love your vids, thank you. I have typical issue. Furnace comes on, blower motor hums and heats up...doesnt spin SOME times. Start manually...it will get going. I started with cheapest, capacitor. About same results, worked for a day maybe. If a motor is bad, wouldnt it not work at all? Obviously its getting power, new capacitor should be giving kick...would a failing motor work "some" or with a manually bump? Blower fan spins free, no binding also.

Yeah I just bought a house and did not check the filter, which was really nasty. Once the fan stopped blowing completely (but the furnace was still getting hot) I finally looked up your tutorials. I switched out the filter but the motor was scalding hot. The fan still spins fairly smoothly. I have it turned off now, and when everything cools down in a couple hours I will try to turn it on and see what happens, but I will probably need a technician.

What if it DOES send power, but the motor is old?! "I realized the motor bushings were out of oil, and it couldn't overcome the initial friction to start, as it was hard to turn and the motor was very hot if you did get it to run. Anyway I saved 175 bucks on a new motor by taking it apart and re-oiling the felt pads on the two bushings in the blower motor. It would not be hard for some people to do if you are mechanically inclined. Some motors may have oil ports, if they do I would use them."

I have just de-iced my hvac and not getting air coming from my wall intakes. When I take the front panel off, and run the AC, I was getting good circulation through my air ducts. When I put that cover back on, I get very little and strong suction on the panel. Before this I found the old filter either sucked up from the bottom or stuck in there. I pulled it out and ran again to see if air came through the ducts (just purchased this home). I did de-ice the coils as I thought that this old gross filter probably caused the build up and the blower (above all the coils) would produce good air flow again. Wasn’t the case. Now what I notice is when I try to run the fan with heat/cool off, it doesn’t turn on. I deiced with heat gun and wondering if there are internal components that may still be compromising air to flow from the bottom intake to the top

Jay--very helpful video--my blower motor wasn't coming on and when i opened up the air handler compartment i found water up all the way to the filter ! Apparently drain was either clogged or p-trap was dry and wouldn't let it drain. Since water had been running down the side of the blower motor i wanted to make sure it wasn't shorted out etc so i followed your procedure. However, what i discovered was the there was not 120V coming out of the control board. Just to further confirm i followed your hotwire procedure and the blower motor immediately came on (relief !)--but when it came on water started running down the side of it again even though the drain pan was dry--so maybe water in the squirrel cage ? In any event things got weirder when i shut the power off (i have to unplug--there's no switch) and hooked the leads back into the control board--when i plugged the power cord back in the 15A buss fuse next to the plug in outlet immediately blew. I thought maybe the water had shorted the motor so i waited until the motor was dry and re-ran the hotwire test and the blower came on just fine (again relief !)--but when i unplugged, put the leads back in the control board and plugged in again my new 15A buss fuse blew immediately again. So now i don't know what's causing that--can a bad control board cause a short like that? And if so, why hadn't it shorted out the fuse in the first place? (ie the fuse was ok before i started all of the above). or is it possible there's a new issue ? Thanks in advance for any help

Hey Mark! Thank you for taking the time to tell the whole story and not just the last part :) Yes, it is possible that the control board is bad. Also, do you know for sure that you are plugging those wires back into the right spot? Which wire did you use to do the hot-wire and which terminal/s did you pull it off of and now putting it back on to? About the blower motor housing. I bet there was just some water on the bottom of the housing. In that case you can let it just dry out with time or take out the blower assembly and tip it over to drain it out. It's possible that the water leak took out the control board or damaged something else.

The wires i took off and jumped together were the black wire coming from the door switch--it went into the "Line" terminal on the control board & the blue wire on the "Cool" terminal going from the board to the motor--i'm pretty sure i plugged them back into the right terminals but i'll check to see if i accidentally switched them around. What worries me is that all that water (50 gallons +) collected in the air return compartment (fortunately this unit is outside the house here in AZ) but no condensate went into the secondary drain line to trip the float switch--it was dry as a bone--made me wonder if my drain pan is cracked but unfortunately on this Rheem unit there is no way to access the drain pan without cutting the coil casing. What a crappy design ! Is it possible that if i had a dry P-trap there would be so much air being sucked back into the drain pan that it would also prevent drainage to the secondary line, given their proximity to each other ? i went ahead and ordered a new control board--hopefully that's where the short is, although i didn't see any sign that water touched it. Will let you know in a week or so.

@@WordofAdviceTV OK Jay--now i feel like a bonehead--you hit the nail on the head with the short--i didn't switch the wires around but instead i plugged the black wire from the door switch into an open "neutral" terminal creating the aforementioned fireworks--yeesh. At least the fuse protected the blower motor--i hotwired again and it works fine--but i still can't activate the fan at the thermostat. Going back, since i originally didn't measure any voltage at the output terminals of the board i am replacing the board and crossing my fingers. Thanks again for your help--you ever done any dumb thing like that ?

Yikes, so a direct short is what it was. Glad to hear you figured it out though! There is a good chance that it is indeed the board that is bad. And yes, of course I had my share of blunders like that too :) one time I put in a hi-limit that I had to break a little tab off of to make it into 24v limit instead of a 120v... And I forgot to break that little tab. I fried the thermostat, the limit, the control board, and the transformer all in one go. Only did that mistake once.

Your videos are great and helped me narrow down my problem. But I still don't have my answer. My blower motor does not turn on. (The inducer motor does run) I believe the root of my problem was a dirty filter, which I believe has caused my unknown issue. I did install a new filter. I replaced the limit switch (not the issue). The capacitor was tested and is good. I did jump the blower motor by using a jumper wire between the G & R terminals. When I do this the fan spins for about 1/2 second, but that is all. (This tells me that my control board is good I think). My blower motor spins freely when I spin with my fingers and the backside of the motor is not hot at all after sending signal to heat furnace for a few minutes. Now I'm stumped. What else should I check? Everything seems pretty clean and my unit looks just like the one you use in many of your videos. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My wife tested positive for COVID and it's hard to get a professional to come to our house. Thank you!

it's quite possible the motor start capacitor is fully charged 1. you can get a real jolt 2, if you connect the capacitor at this state to your meter, the meter will be fried. You should try and discharge the capacitor before anything else. Touching an insulated handle screw driver to the bare metal contacts will do this BUT it is really bad for the capacitor to discharge this fast. you should use something like a 5k 5 watt resistor.

Super clear and easy to understand, you cover all possibilities which is AMAZING...one question i have is, is it ok to bypass the control board for long time? i have a issue where my outside fan kick in and the blower motor for inside stops (vice versa as well)...so im thinking to try and bypass the control board.
