hello there..,, can the abr test determine what is causing the refer oae results..??? such as a blockage from wax, fluid, congestion..??? or a permanent hearing loss from the cochlea..??? thank you pls reply..

Hello. Thank you for your interest. This is an answer for you from one of our Interacoustics Academy Trainers: " The ABR test allows the clinician to determine the hearing levels. If there is a sensorineural hearing loss from the cochlea, bone conduction ABR results can identify this. ABR results (both air conduction and bone conduction) in combination with middle ear function testing such as tympanometry can help determine information about the status of the middle ear. Additional OAE testing can also add information to the test battery to help the clinician draw conclusions. However, sometimes the cause of the OAE refer results can be temporary and if this has resolved by the point that ABR testing is performed, then it may not be possible to establish what the cause was."

yes thank you..., i would like to ask can an abnormal tympanogram like flat type b.?? cause a hearing loss..?? or a refer oae..??... pls reply., thank you...

Yes, a flat / type B tympanogram can cause a hearing loss and can lead to refer OAE results, but this is not always the case. Furthermore, if there is an abnormal tympanogram, without further diagnostic investigations, it is not possible to determine that this is the only or definitive cause of the refer OAE results - it is possible to have two or more causes. If you want to learn more about tympanometry please visit www.interacoustics.com/academy , where you will find a large selection of resources on all things audiology and balance :) .

My child is 4 months old His TEOAE says REFER for both ears How do i proceed now Does it mean he definetely had hearing loss?? If yes what will be the prognosis Please reply

Thank you for your question. When a baby's OAE results are REFER, it is essential that you take your child for a diagnostic hearing test such as ABR. The OAE is a screening test only and no conclusions can be made about your child's hearing at this stage. There are many reasons why the OAE results can be REFER. This does not necessarily mean there is a hearing loss, however it is a possibility and this is why it is important to get some more in depth testing in order to get you the answers you need. Please speak to your local audiology service for more advice on your next steps. It is understandable that you are concerned and we hope you can arrange an appointment soon.
