For those DIY'rs that don't have an expensive comp and are worried about not enough fluid being added, you can measure what's been dumped. I've done this with CVT's and normal automatics that require VERY specific amounts or damage may be done. Use a measuring cup and record exactly how many cups have been dumped out of the trans and record it. Clean the cup and refill it with the precise amount of fluid to go back in. I've never had any problems using this method.

@s.benedetto2147 Жыл бұрын
If I'm doing the first ever drain and fill on my QX60, what's wrong with draining the CVT fluid, accurately measuring the volume drained and replacing it with the exact same amount?
@HhhGggg-rz7bu2 ай бұрын
The method Dial2Fast uses is from the factory service manual. If you don't follow this procedure, you won't know if the transmission had the right fluid level prior. CVT fluid volume is very sensitive to temperature. If the temperature of the fluid you drain is not the same as that which you refill, the volume will expand or contract according to the temperature differential. This will lead to an incorrect fluid level at operating temperature.
@sc225 Жыл бұрын
IS that possible just insert an oil extrator tube from top an suck up the fluid and replace the same volume new fluid in and call it done. Since you can really can empty all old fluids an not need torun the engine to temp...etc
@dial2fast Жыл бұрын
The method you mentioned will not guarantee you have the proper fluid level. CVT fluid volume changes quite a bit with temperature. This is the reason Nissan took away the dipstick because they don't want people to check level with it. The method I showed in this video is per the Nissan service manual. You are the car owner, so you can decide how you want to do this service but just keep in mind replacing a CVT transmission cost $4000-$8000.

@slin149025 күн бұрын
I'm a DIY'er and I have a $400 scan tool. Depends on what level and how many uses you have. I service 3 cars and the tool is worth it. There are values you need to see, reset, calibrate or aid in troubleshooting. These engines are much more electronic. On some vehicles, you need it just to do a brake job. The cost I avoided more than compensates for the tool. I predict that if it doesn't for you, it just hasn't yet or else you won't be DIY for long into the future.

Great video. I just purchased a 2012 Quest. I am intending to service the cvt asap and have the fluids , filter, and pan gasket. This vehicle does have the dipstick. So if I’ve got the temp in the right range , using that dipstick should be good , I think . Do you agree? I just called the local Nissan dealer and they said they don’t change that filter in the pan, but “flush 3 times “ and charge me 350 for that. The vehicle is in spectacular shape and has 185,000 miles and so far the cvt works great and I intend to stick to that 30k interval.

What the dealer told you is correct. The Nissan dealer does not change the filter as part of the service. They only do a drain and fill. But if you want to do the filter change, then that's up to you. Since you have a dipstick, you can see how dark the tran fluid is. If it's really dark or smell burnt, then you can do the drain and fill couple of times and drive some miles between fluid change.
