You can also try this: Jack up the car near the drivers door. This will usually raise the rear tire as well and you can then just swap the tires front to rear and rear to front. If you're not working under the car you don't really need a jack stand. I've been doing it like this for years using a 3 ton floor jack. Good video!
@dial2fast

Yes that is true. I have also rotated tires without jack stands, and is fine as long as you are not getting under the car. But I thought I'd show the 'safe' way so I don't get chewed out by the internet police...hehe

Good video. But tires should not be rotated Front-Left with Back-Right and Front-Right with Back-Left?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 2 жыл бұрын
For the home DIY mechanic, rotating the tires front to rear is perfectly fine. You will still maintain proper wear on all 4 tires by rotating it this way. If you have directional tires, then the tires can only be rotated front to rear. Of course if you have 4 jack stands and you want to jack up all 4 corners, then you can rotate them across (only for non-directional tires).

Very detailed video. Thank you. Why use the breaker bar when you could have used the impact gun (impact wrench) to loosen the lug nuts in the first place? That impact gun should have enough torque to loosen those nuts without needing the breaker bar. Am I missing something?

It's better to get them moving first on the ground because if they've been impacted on and over torqued, sometimes the impact wrench won't loosen it. Then you'd have to lower it again to break it loose.

4 yrs old I'm not sure if you'll respond but is there a difference jacking the car, putting the jack stands on the left and right of car and just changing the front tires then the back tires? I see you do the left side then the right side. Maybe this is because you are rotating tires I am just switching sets of tires for winter
@dial2fast
@dial2fast Жыл бұрын
I swapped the front and back for tire rotation because the front will get worn out faster than the rear. If you are just swapping out tires with winter ones, you can just do one corner at a time. There are lift points at the front and rear under the cross member to jack up the whole axle. Do what works for you and be safe.

Hi, I have a 2020 Odyssey Touring. I have a winter set of rims and tires (Odyssey LX rims) and I just recently switched to them. I have 2 issues: 1) There is no TPMS button to press beside the VSA button. 2) There is no selection for Tire Calibration on the infotainment screen - I selected Settings, Vehicle, then that's all there is,... there was no Tire calibration to select. Doesn't the 2020 Odyssey Touring have Indirect TPMS as well? I would have to get a warning - "TPMS problem" all the time now, please help
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 4 жыл бұрын
All Honda Odyssey have tires fitted with TPMS sensors inside the tire for it to work. There is no setting you can access via the LCD menu. Each sensor will have to be registered with the vehicle for the sensor to work. This requires a TPMS programming tool which mechanics have. You need to speak to your local dealer or tire shop to get the correct sensors installed and programmed.

@@dial2fast Thank you, the thing now is, I just learned a few things: 1) the 2020 Odyssey has a Direct TPMS snd all the while I thought I had the Indirect TPMS, Duh 2) I would need to get a separate set of TPMS on my winter rim set (unless I don't mind having no VSA temporarily or having the tpms warning light for 5 months) So for my winter set, would it be best to get the OEM tpms sensors or aftermarket? Or should I just leave it until spring to switch back to my Summer tire and rims which has the TPMS?

Why do you use a breaker bar instead of torque wrench to loosen the lug nuts? Is it necessary to purchase two different tools?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 3 жыл бұрын
DO NOT use a torque wrench to loosen the lug nuts. That can mess up the calibration of the torque wrench. Some people then ask why does it have a forward/reverse selector. That's because there are some bolts that tighten counterclockwise.

Should note it is important to only check tire pressure when tires are cold (like sitting overnight) I've seen it time and time again, customers drive to dealership to get oil change and rotation, tires are hot so they show over inflated so tech lets air out to 36 but then once tire cools it is under inflated..Customers are cluless or wouldn't even think about this.
@tntullahoma

Good tip. You simply tell the tech to inflate the hot tires to 39 PSI (+5 PSI for hot tires).

Aren't you supposed to rotate the tires front to back but also left to right in an X-pattern?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast Жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of tires you have. If you have directional tires, then you swap front to rear. For non-directional tires, you can do the x pattern. There is nothing wrong with just swapping front to back. Also most people have 2 jack stands at home. To do the x pattern, you will have to put the entire car on jackstands.

I know there are different types of rotation. I've seen front to back and back to front like this and I've seen front to back and back to opposite front (passenger front to passenger rear and passenger rear to driver front for example). Any reason you chose one over the other?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 3 жыл бұрын
Because for most home owners, this is the only way you can rotate tires assuming most people have 1 floor jack and 2 jack stands. Swapping the tires diagonally require you to jack all four corners up and putting it on jack stands or perhaps you have a lift at home. Also I have done it this way on the cars I owned and the tire wear is still even all around.
@jamesfederer5592
@jamesfederer5592 2 жыл бұрын
Back to opposite front will screw up the tire direction. It is only OK for tires without direction. Winter tires usually have direction mark on them.

Always well done and filmed concise vids. Thanks for posting them! Great advice with loosening those Honda rotor screws while you still can. I live in the Northeast U.S. those screws often have to be drilled out. From what I understand they are actually an asian industrial size and slightly different than a standard phillips head. Always best to buy your new tires in sets of four for balanced traction at all 4 corners and always reset your Honda TPMS after rotation/adjusting tire pressure 👍🏽

@@robregal8008 The directional tires I have owned before were marked with the word 'outside' on one side of the wall of the tire. Also it will have an arrow for the direction. Some of them do say 'rotation' on them. One time, I bought a set from Discount Tires, and they actually mounted one of the four wrong with the 'outside' facing inside, and I had to go back and have them remount the tire. Torquing the rear wheels while the fronts are still in the air is a very unsafe practice. The force of torquing moves the vehicle back and forth a bit; which is enough for the front jack stands to tip off dropping the front end. Having all 4 wheels at a suspended height or on the ground is safe for torquing.
