Yeah but you know we got to get a new speaker maybe a couple mods definitely a delay pedal oh yeah and an Overdrive. And we are definitely going to have to try a hundred different kind of tubes

@@stringlocker Ha ha, true. I have one and it sounds killer and fun with nothing in front of it, but really wakes up with delay and a splash of fuzz or od. It's honestly a perfect pedal platform for practicing with a hand-wired legit tube circuit. How awesome is that. I've swapped tubes too and they all sound great. It's just pure, simple, fun.

At 8:16 is tone heaven for jazz players. A friend is gigging and recording exactly like this - paired with a Princeton amp. Sweet smoky sound. One is crunchy and compressed and the other is beautifully open. He has a decent pedalboard too. I was astonished these tone you shared. Thank you for the excellent recording!

The entire Derek and the Dominoes album was made with 2 small amps. Clapton had the Tweed Champ, and Duane Allman had the blackface Princeton Reverb. This is according to Tom Dowd. The tones on that album require no explanations or justifications. Now that volume of any kind is a Federeal offense, it's more important than ever to have an awesome amp that can deliver the tones at a level that will keep Karen from coming and screaming at you. The Tweed Champ is among the first choices. It's unbelievable how much harmonic complexity can come from such a simple circuit. It's the embodiment of the idea that less is more. I don't have a Champ, I have a 1956 5F2A Princeton, and it sounds like God shouting from the mountain top, only at volume levels that don't bring flashing blue and red lights into my driveway, at least not during the daytime. I did 3 mods to mine, all easily reversible. I removed the tone control and replaced it with a master volume. This gives me a volume control on both the 12AX7 and the 6V6. It lets me move the headroom and the edge of breakup any where I like at any volume. It helps to keep the anti loud nazis off my back and still be able to sound like a real amp. It's also extremely touch sensitive, and my right hand is my distortion control. No pedals needed. I also used a push pull pot for the master volume, Which is connected to the feedback loop. I can run it stock, or I can disconnect the loop, and get a more raw, almost Vox kind of response. The last thing I did was to add a 25/25 bypass cap across the cathode of the 2nd half of the 12AX7. This increases the gain dramatically when cranked, but when you back it off, the sweet clean thing comes right back. I have a nearly infinite range of tones avaliable, from clean to dirty, and there's not a bad sound to be had anywhere within that range. If you can't make this one sound good, you can't play. Period. These 3 changes have dramatically increased the versatility of this amp, and I routinely turn down offers from people trying to buy it from me. I tell them "You can't have this one, it's mine, but if you want to comission me to build you one, I can make you an exact duplicate of it from a re issue for what you're offering me for this one" I saved all of the original parts, and put them away safely, just in case somebody wants to trade me their house for it or some ridiculous collector insanity like that. But as far as I'm concerned, this one is a keeper. The next time it changes hands will be at my estate sale.

There will be a lot of color from the cab and speaker, but that might be exactly what you are looking for :) Maybe turn off the Cab and Power Amp sim in your modeller and you can find some really cool tones from there!

Then the company never would have survived the period of live music in the 60s before PAs were advanced enough to amplify little amps to stadium volumes. Those “crap” amps you don’t like were developed to be able to be heard in increasingly loud venues at a time when PAs were only good for amplifying vocals.
