One of my biggest gripes, that is often overlooked in discussions about Adventure and later, is the animal spawning rules. In beta, you'd have neutral animals come and go, and any grassy part of the map would feel alive during the day at least some of the time. Since Adventure, animals stayed instead of despawning, but also barely any new ones ever spawn in during the game, instead they are spawned with world generation. This has made leather armor harder to come by than iron, and porkchops a really unsustainable form of food. But most importantly, the world feels empty and sterile, and also static. You'll always encounter the same animals that you've fenced in probably, and then never see any other ones around your base.

Very good point! I dont think a lot of people realise this either but I greatly understand wym when you say it makes the world feel static. Its a shame too.

Yea passive mobs basically spawn in a chunk until a cap is met, then spawning is no longer allowed. I can only assume this change was added since animal breeding was gonna become a thing. And since they probably wanted you to start breeding animals early, they wanted a more natural feeling where you could “exterminate” local populations of animals if you didn’t control yourself.

one thing about the adventure update is that minecraft really got its 'look' in this update - if you took a screenshot of 1.7.3 most people would recognize it as old/beta minecraft, while any screenshot past the adventure update would probably just be recognized solely as 'minecraft' - it could be from any version post-adventure update

I love strongholds because they feel old, but the portal being unbreakable and floating and whatnot feels really ancient, like this old, now-dead, civilization found the portal and built the structure around it, and the fact that there’s sometimes already eyes in there makes me think they tried to activate it and failed? If you know Elder Scrolls lore it really reminds me of the Dwemer trying to activate the Heart of Lorkhan and causing the sudden and unexplainable disappearance of their entire race.

IIRC the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft introduced the village before the villagers were implemented, so you found the structures but there were no friendly mobs in sight. It really added an uncanny feeling which I still remember today, walking into a completely undisturbed yet abandoned place and just wondering, "where did everybody go?"

I'd say beta was more survival in a way that you couldn't just run from mobs? Like nowadays there is nothing dagerous in minecraft unless you seek it. In beta you have to watch out every time you meet a mob because you can't simply outrun it
@desdera7583

sorry but i strongly disagree you can outrun them (was able to outrun spiders downhill without hitting them to slow them down, and they jump) you can easily abuse AI (literally no pathfinding, not sure when they changed it) you can just avoid them during nights xD they don't see that far and you can "sneak" between groups newer versions make it easier in many ways sure, but can't see it was ever about survival besides famous first night, either way you end up shaping the world you created, be it beta or release

I would argue it is alot more survival based since 1.19, especially the nether and massive caves,in earlier versions (I.e beta) it is very easy to basically make it that mobs don't spawn due to smaller caves and the nether was had hardly anything.After you beat the ender dragon you don't need to go back..
@LB_
@LB_ 9 ай бұрын
8:55 it's because you can't sprint in earlier versions. We got sprinting and hunger at the same time, which completely shattered any difficulty there was in the game when trying to survive against the monsters in the game. Not only could you just run away from any encounter, you could also carry stacks of food instead of having to carefully budget your inventory space. The old food system and lack of sprinting placed much more emphasis on trying to actually survive difficult encounters since you couldn't just run away and you had very limited healing potential.

I've always felt that the adventure update made the first changes to the game that gave a true foundation to alter the game from a solely sandbox experience into one with story. As you mentioned with the addition of villages it added life into an otherwise lifeless world which has only been further increased which each update since, drastically changing the way I personally feel when I play the game. I'm aware this is widely known but I think it is often missed when discussing the difference in feel between beta and the later versions.

Hope this comment is not too long but I just wanted to share my experience as an old school Minecraft player. I came over from an even older "building/ sandbox" game called Blockland. My friend, his older brother and I used to play Blockland constantly in back in 2008. Then I remember about a year later his older brother was telling us about this new game called Minecraft (he was into game development and I imagine he learned about Minecraft on some forum because he was an incredibly early adopter, pre indev). I remember watching him play and actually disliking it originally because It didn't have weapons or vehicles or anything haha. But once my friends basically quit Blockland to play Minecraft instead I felt the need to try it out. I got in around Alpha 1.1.0 and instantly fell in love. The atmosphere was what made it for me, the game just had this mysterious allure. What I notice a lot of people say is that some look back on pre beta 1.8 with blind nostalgia and that is why its so beloved, but I can give my anecdote to the contrary: I remember hating when the changed the grass color to a more olive green in late Alpha! I remember hating the biome additions/ getting rid of winter mode! I remember hating when they added short grass! I remember when beta 1.8 came out.. I hated every addition! The change in terrain generation, the even more muted colors, hunger, endermen (etc). And when the game was finally officially released.. I just felt like it was not the same game I once loved. It lost its charm and mystery to me. It became too much of an RPG and I was disappointed in the direction development went. I thought it was stupid that this game even had an "ending" not to mention that it felt like a forced joke. Making the entire end of the game be a spin off pun of Slenderman seemed so silly. I remember rumors about the "red dragon" Notch wanted to add, the non-zombie pigmen, overworld strongholds, abandoned villages, heaven dimension. The silly looking villagers, Slenderman pun based (Ending, Dragon, mob) and the RPG mechanics all seemed so awful in their place. I kept playing release for a while but after the old school pure survival servers started dying off in favor of mini games, I quit and I didn't play from 2012-2019 I now have been running a server on the latest versions for the last year, where me and my girlfriend play and I really think the game is now in a better spot than it was in the 1.0 - 1.11 period. The nether update, Ocean update (and others) all work great with the turn the game took back in beta 1.8. If the game is going to have RPG mechanics and bosses, the additions over the last 10 years all make sense and help add that vision. I enjoy the modern game a lot, it's still the best building/sandbox game I have ever played, but nothing will ever come close to the good old days of classic - beta 1.7.3!

An interesting anecdote about Endermen is that they could've been a nod to creepypastas in general, especially surrounding the game. At the time, due to some model stitching errors, white dots would sometimes appear in caves, starting the urban legend that an entity with white eyes would stalk you while you were in caves. Considering their pitch black skin tone and glowing eyes, I personally feel like this is what endermen were supposed to represent, especially since they were revealed as just a 'creepy mob'. Plus, I don't think the name 'Enderman' was chosen solely because it's a Slenderman pun, Notch only ever referred to it as a 'Subtle Reference'. Anyway, Endermen are probably my favorite of the hostile mobs despite playing beta 1.7.3 a lot more recently, so I guess I felt the need to defend it, lol. Really interesting comment, btw.

It's way too easy to get sidetracked in modern Minecraft, sidetracked by filler material - which *is* nice to have, but beta is about bare necessities and I guess that's why people say it's more about survival. I get a lot of stuff done while playing beta, whereas in the latest snapshots there's always the thought of "Oh, I haven't got bamboo, I should head out and get some. Oh I haven't got a conduit, I should head out and look for treasure! Oh I haven't got camels yet ..." But at long last, I made sure that I worked off my imaginary list and a lot of the items are only sitting in the chests! It's great that Minecraft flourishes as it does, there have been games before that kept players entertained for more than a decade, but a sandbox game like this has so many options and then some. As long as the community keeps on playing they'll make sure to try to keep them coming for more. Figuratively speaking, of course you can bring your flashy action figures and your model spaceships into the sandbox, but it's quite safe that you'll be too involved playing with those before you actually start building that sand castle that you wanted to and "always dreamed of". Modern life, at least for me, is too fast and cluttered, so at times I prefer a more stripped down version of escapism that is called old Minecraft. Like you already mentioned, that eerie, mystic feeling of being alone is great and it's way more palpable in beta.

Your little commentary about Villagers, and how just finding Abandoned Villages would have added more to the atmosphere, reminds me of Halo, oddly enough. In the original trilogy, the Forerunners were a mysterious, long lost race who only had left behind their giant constructs and terminals, and the sense of unknown about them added this layer of unease while wandering the Ark and Alpha Halo. But now we've straight up fought Forerunners, we've seen what they look like, and it diminishes the feeling of a civilization long lost.

Completely agree with panes and new chests feeling like something from a mod. They always felt alien and not quite fitting the rest of Minecraft in my eye. Anvils too to some extent. I remember back in Beta we would all just use an iron block for an anvil. In fact, there was a bukkit server mod that let you combine equipment for repairing and that was done by right-clicking on an iron block with each item. What about grass and torches? non full blocks have almost always been a part of the game. The thing that you don’t like is that these new additions are a step away from the nostalgic feeling of Minecraft that you like. Ask your self what additions to beta you would like, and if you can’t answer that question then it’s probably because you simply like the feel/vibe/nostalgia of these old versions. Instead of the game taking a fundamentally wrong turn.

to me everything after 1.7 was a turning point. it became more about polishing rather than going for is this good for the game. what kept happening and is still happening is this feature creep that adds more and more lag, forgotten features or useless mobs you will forget about a month after the update comes out. it has this weird clash of styles with the old and new. adventure is not the problem, its the corperation that needs new updates every year because of some kind of idea that it will kill the game.

I wonder where the "needs new updates every year or it will kill the game" mindset comes from. Most other games aren't like that, and it feels like constantly having to add 'features' no one wants isn't the best use of a company's money. I didn't know, it would be interesting to have an inside look at Mojang's financials & corporate politics.

One particular thing emblematic about this specific update and old Minecraft as a whole that I kind of miss is how the new features would pretty clearly reflect whatever Notch and the rest of the team were interested in at the time. The Adventure update was developed and released around the latter half of 2011 and the mania for Skyrim among the "core" crowd of gamers and developers was fucking huge at the time. You can tell the dude was on a huge ARPG kick and was extremely hyped for Skyrim's release while developing the update. The great majority of features added in the Adventure Update really just reflected whatever features he liked from The Elder Scrolls and other ARPGs he was into in 2011 - Old medieval style villages with stone churches, libraries and forges, the ability to enchant your weapons, alchemy-inspired potion brewing, big and dangerous structures like mineshafts, fortresses and strongholds, and, perhaps most obvious of them all, the big dragon endboss you had to kill to roll credits. I kind of understand people not really vibing with how RPG-centric this update is. I don't really think an "ending" to this game was necessary either. But man, I don't know, I think this characteristic of old Minecraft development was really charming and made the game feel so uniquely "Indie" in a way that it hasn't felt in a very long time now. Updates reflected whatever the developers were interested in at the time, because it was just a small team of people adding things that they liked from whatever they were playing. It was neat!

I mean this in the best way possible, but this video made me cry. This is the version I first played on back when I was a little kid and idk if its your casual/calm cadence, nostalgia, the fact I'm watching this at 2am, or a combination of the three, but I feel like I got sucker punched back into 2011 and I'm watching Paulsoaresjr's survive and thrive series or some adventure map. This video gave me so much nostalgic comfort, thank you for reminding me of the good times. I'm definitely gonna be an active subscriber. Edit: also when you mentioned how people had issues with the size of Abandoned Mineshafts (around the 1:10:20 mark) their criticism had some merit (at least for the time) as there was a bug until 1.0 (i think it was patched out by then) where if you entered an abandoned mineshaft, any new chunks you entered while still in the mineshaft would generate more mineshaft chunks instead of ending the mineshaft and generating more cave. this meant that if you were unlucky enough, you would be stuck in a labyrinthine eldritch mineshaft that would never end and endlessly generate, trapping you inside unless you found where your first entered it. So yea I can understand why ppl had issue with it lol

I have always seem Minecraft, when I play it, as a more medieval fantasy RPG esque world, a world I can shape and explore, to make my own stories... and just adding NPCs or lore to a game like that(not that a sandbox can't have lore), just ruined a lot of that creativity for a younger me. This world was what I made of it, what me and my friends create shape this abandoned landscape. My biggest gripe with modern, less so with this version, is that the game is, to me, no longer Minecraft but a minigame hub like early roblox was. The same trite mundane tedium over and over again. This is why I love builders, they are the lifeblood of this game, they make it prettier than it already is. Bit of a rant. Awesome video!

sprinting made survival much easier compared to beta. I'm pretty sure thats why people say beta is more survival focused. Speaking in a more abstract sense though, adding a final boss and leveling is also a sign of a shift in focus for the game. Giving the player goals like that distracts us from focusing on how to survive and develop a base and instead on how to grind enough to beat the objective. Giving the player goals dramatically shifts how they play the game.

I started playing on Xbox with the castle tutorial world idk which version that was but I never really played in these very old versions. Out of the new versions I feel like 1.18 is the best one. The caves and cliffs world generation. It felt really fresh but at the same time I miss the old generation. It was also pretty soon after the nether update which is imo the best update. (Right above aquatic). Your gripes about the game after playing beta is interesting. It adds to the aspect. I’m also happy it’s not how new gen Minecraft vids are with are all fast past. With cuts every 2 seconds and also scripted as well.

I started minecraft right before the adventure update. My first world was a small dirt hut on a small dirt island. Imagine my surprise when the game updated. Had no clue what was going on. I enjoy both versions in different ways. Pre adventure is fantastic because of the simplicity and focus on building and mining. Post adventure is the one I played the most and generally enjoy. I do wish there was a mod that combined the 2. Not in a better than adventure way, a proper merge of the two. Would love to fight the enderdragon in the beta. I also like how the beta has non stackable foods. Although cooking the food is a bit annoying I believe a whole stack of food is kinda overpowered.

As someone who also grew up with 1.0, official release 1.7 felt a lot like the Adventure Update to golden age Minecrafters. I already didn't like swamps and jungles were too common for the aesthetic I wanted, but now they also added huge savannah biomes, dark oak trees that despite the cool planks had really predicable leaves that just look like a flattened sphere, more flattened terrain, less caves, and no more oceans to explore. The only upsides were the new commands for creative, the mega taiga, and the stained glass that can be used to make very cool windows, but for some reason they gave them a very bland shade. At the same time, I do recognize that beta had these mountains full of life that were lost in the Adventure Update. I found that planting spruce saplings on extreme hills biomes bordering a taiga gave a nice combination of both beta and 1.7+ in silver age 1.0-1.6.4.

This is a really good video. It kind of stung a bit hearing you say that you grew up with it, since I was well in my thirties before Minecraft was even a thing. Then it stung a bit more when you said that you grew up with the dragon, since that came even later, but fair enough. I really like this version. I appreciate the added content and the washed out colors don't bother me too much. I also like the really large biomes. When I first started playing seriously, I began with 1.8.9 because I wasn't confident with my graphics card. In 1.8.9 in my first world (which is the one I stayed with), I kept to my spawn point which was on a small Plains, but surrounding me were ridiculously huge Mountains biome, Covered Forest or Dark Forest - there was a name change at some point, plus a massive Jungle biome, and River Mountains biome. And no Ocean for thousands and thousands of blocks. In any direction I really couldn't navigate. I had no sheep nearby, and what I didn't know is that there was a weird bug that didn't play any sheep sounds at a small distance. So, I literally spent an in-game year without a bed. Every time I went looking for sheep I'd end up lost, particularly after running from a creeper, and since it was so difficult to navigate the terrain, it took me forever just to get anywhere. I remember one day I was chopping down a tree, and while my axe was hitting the wood, I thought I heard some distant sheep. But as soon as I stopped chopping, the sound was gone. It was then that I realized what was happening. Fortunately, the Phantom mob wasn't in the game yet. Eventually I carried this world over to 1.16.5. And I only did this because I really wanted some other lighting options other than torches and glowstone. But beyond that, you can literally see how much easier the game became. Within two minutes of spawn, there's a village or two, you have a bed within seconds. Usually iron ingots and food. Everything is on a silver platter before you even start. I think it ruins the fun of the game. I enjoyed watching you play this version. Thinking I'll have to try it myself.

i feel like the villager designs somewhat fit minecraft at the time. just these things that exist and made you go "what the fuck is that" when you first found them. really fits the other mobs introduced around that time like endermen or pigmen that arent based on any pre-existing fantasy creatures or just regular farm animals. that being said them doing nothing and lacking any sound design was a really weird choice and made the villages feel really unfinished

i'm very accustomed to modern minecraft since i took the route and decided to stay up to date with the latest, but i started playing around when 1.7 just came out, first versions being 1.2.5 and 1.5.2 and every time i try to revisit them and play them i'm just so used to all the quality of life changes i just end up getting bored or frustrated :( for the longest time i didn't understand why people preferred not having hunger and not being able to sprint, decided to try out Better Than Adventure last month and honestly? i kinda get it now! it was pretty fun playing but most of my enjoyment from the game comes from playing with friends and most of my friends play bedrock on console so that was a lost cause as well, kinda interesting how bedrock cross-play ended up dividing players more than bringing them together in a way haha this was honestly a pretty fun watch and was a gentle reminder what minecraft was to me when i first started playing and it's a feeling that's hard to replicate for me

9:11 I know I'm super late on this, but I thought I'd provide some insight. Given the fact that Beta Minecraft up until the Adventure update didn't have sprinting, the game, in general, felt more dangerous to most people. If you were in an encounter with an enemy, it was often very difficult to escape, especially if there were a lot of them and/or you were in an enclosed space such as a cave. The combat and movement was more "methodical", if that makes sense. You had to plan your moves a bit more and scope out the area. Nowadays you can just go "oh shit" and sprint away if you overestimate your capabilities. You can literally survive the entire first night without a shelter or bed just by sprinting around enemies and periodically eating. This was absolutely unheard of pre Beta 1.8.

It feels like after adventure, you were in more control of the fantasy of the world, while in before you just had to live with in the fantasy. There was monsters and stuff, and they were generally stronger or just as strong as you, but then you could just outrun them all. All the magic stuff they added is cool, and i can enjoy, but it gives you way more power over the fantasy around you that the game loses much of its challenge and atmosphere

I grew up playing a lot of the beta versions. When release came out I wasn’t sure how I felt about it at the time. Minecraft was always just Minecraft for me. Coming back to Minecraft and even going back to the Beta versions, the biggest difference for me was that release gave people a goal to reach the last boss. For most games that makes sense, but for Minecraft it felt like it was a game intended for players to find their own endgame, to make their own goals. Which further enhanced the sandbox for me. I love both versions a lot, but both are fairly different games. Your channel is the reason I’ve been getting back into the beta versions and I’m having a blast! Thanks so much for your content man! Keep it up!

I actually like the drive the hunger bar gives towards building a sustainable food source, it gives you the push in a direction of building farms or domesticating animals. Although i agree that a village design that would be more abandoned and like discovering some lost town/civilization would have been more interesting and lend itself to the game's other structures. Like if you could play Minecraft today without any prior knowledge of the game and you wonder through all the beautiful landscapes feeling alone. Then bit by bit discover the evil monster that rise with the sunset, abandoned mineshafts, dilapidated ghost town villages, Temples with protected treasures, hellish fortresses and finally an entire stronghold long empty built around an indestructible portal. It would all be so intriguing like solving a puzzle once piece at a time of an ancient and lost world.

I remember being so absolutely hyped about the adventure update, talking about it and looking at screenshots of it every day with my friend. I'm pretty sure an early version of the update leaked onto the internet prior to its intended release, and that was probably the most exciting day of my Minecraft career. I certainly wasn't disappointed back then! Now, though, I realize that the 1.8 update made the game worse in a lot of ways and is probably the least fun version you can play, without the interesting world generation and simplicity of Beta and without all the new features that would be added in the coming years that'd make modern minecraft more fun.

The fog change came in 1.18.1. If I recall correctly, it was done to try and optimize the amount of actually-visible terrain at lower render distances (because in the old fog, far away chunks ate up processing/rendering effort despite barely being visible)... but as you noted, it came at the expense of making the fog itself less appealing.

I think this update was when I really got into MC and loved it. I like the survival aspect and having more to think about than JUST gathering block (which was about all you did in early beta - mine stone and build castles lol, but with far less blocks than now). It's nothing like the adventures you can do now, with ruins and chest loot, but it at least gave you a reason to leave spawn. Whether that be to find food, or new biomes, ect.

I agree with most of what you say but I think the potions/enchantment table don't fit as well is because they're added mainly just to serve the player. It feels like a cliche way of giving players more fighting power to take on the final boss. Those things could have been implemented in a much more natural way. Probably by excluding leveling and also making potion/enchant effects more varied and interesting rather than strictly beneficial.

I feel like beta 1.7 is a full game, which is ironic cause it's beta, the full game is 1.0. But the difference is that you really feel the lack of features in 1.0. There's the lack of needed revampments of features, the boring world generation, and other stuff. Maybe there's a "complete" feeling version before modern and past 1.0 but it is a more gradual change. As of now I feel like the only two version I really care about is beta 1.7 and modern 1.19. Caves and cliffs was an awesome update that revamped the generation and the deep dark is awesome. But beta is so nice with the generation and is kinda it's own feeling from modern minecraft. The game is kinda done, it already has a great balance. Post beta only gets better with updates, like you get more biomes so world generation isn't as boring anymore.

Personally, i like BTB content because they remind me of my childhood, they give me nostalgia, but i don't really like playing beta anymore. I always thought that Minecraft was rather a building game than a survival game, i really enjoy building automatic farms in the modern version and having all the new blocks. Aaaand even tho having all those block palletts i always build a beta-styled town in all my modern worlds. I like to mix everything together as much as i can.
