What I find so compelling about Vintage Story, after years and years of Minecraft, is that one of the long term goals in Minecraft is to automate away all of the tasks so that you need not do them - while in Vintage Story, they've made the tasks engaging enough so that the act of doing them is rewarding in itself. And afterwards, the things you get out of it (a weapon after lots of forging, or a cellar full of food after a long growing season) are rewards *on top of* the enjoyment of engaging with the systems in the first place.

this is the power of strong identity, strong focus. minecraft CANNOT BE ANYTHING. it do everything half, Minecraft is victim of its success. you trying to please so many type of players but end up leaving everyone unsatisfied. no one can define minecraft. i can do it in older versions but today minecraft is definition of bloat. and no, the umbrella term of "survival sandbox" is meaningless (this is coming from a minecraft fan)

After picking this game up a couple of years ago, it has quickly become one of my favorites. One of my favorite things about the game is the small details the devs decided to include. Like how moss is more common on the north side of trees, the smoke particles from campfires being carried in the wind, the way the clouds during the rain raise up into taller storm clouds which you can see off in the distance and know that it is raining over in that region (because rain is localized instead of global like Minecraft). So many small details that add to the immersion and make the world feel more lively. In the upcoming update they are adding particalized insects which is yet another small thing that adds so much. I do hope you continue to play this game because there is a lot more you haven't seen.

Ever since I bought Vintage Story, I haven't played Minecraft. It doesn't scratch every itch that Minecraft does - redstone and command block engineers wouldn't be happy with the game at the moment and even builders would miss some features - but if you're looking for a blocky game about surviving, it doesn't get better than this. Although the best thing about VS, in my opinion, is the developers' relationship with their community - the modding support and the consistently high quality updates based on player feedback.

I'm happy you restarted because there's nothing less fun for a viewer than transitions and long journeys from spawn after death, breaks the story apart frequently so picking a better spawn wasn't the cheap option, I think it was the better option. Because now for the viewer Every journey from spawn won't be a battle and for us that's also good long term as you're less likely to burnout on a game save that's not spawning you on difficult terrain after every death. So for us this is really a win-win.

Vintage Story is such a great game, glad you're having fun with it. :) You can see the "rift activity" (current rate of "portal" spawning) in the character menu (C by default). Tip: you get better food preservation by storing your containers away from sunlight, so moving your clay vessel inside should give you a bit more time on your foodstuffs. Eventually you will want to think about making a proper cellar (a specific room type, doesn't have to actually be underground), especially once your crops start to come in.

This game is absolutely wonderful, glad to see more people enjoying it and giving it some exposure. It originally was inspired by the Minecraft mod TerrafirmaCraft, it ran quite similar in its style but of course, Minecraft being what it is, is limited in it's modability and such. Thus having a whole separate engine specifically built for this and with modding in mind has created this wonderful game. There's really a lot to it, the metal progression currently reaches steel, there's some mechanics in place for mechanism like wind mills and some smithing automation/assistance. A couple useful tips for playing, well, 2 buttons really, is C for character and current world data, shows your temperature and what the local region is about. Second button is H, hover over any item and press it and it'll tell you what it's for and how to get it. Obviously you've already seem the guides in there too. Rest I'm happy to just leave you to figure out, seems you got the right idea on most of it.

Woah, I didn't expect a Vintage Story video coming from the channel. Really good, keep going, this game is awesome! I'll let here a good list of tips that I learned while playing that you may find useful: • This game is NOT not nice to you like Minecraft. What I mean with this is, it is hard, sometimes brutally hard. So don't waste your time wandering around, being unproductive. Be fast. Otherwise, the winter will end you! Don't mind if you need to run, RUN! ; • The wild animais are more dangerous than the surface monsters. But the deep underground monsters... ; • There is a good alternative to firewood, the peat. It is found the same way as clay; • The character window (when pressing C) has some useful information about temperature, weather, time, rift activity, etc. For instance, in that place that it was raining nonstop, the rain is probably "almost always"; • These "portals" that were popping out in the end of the video are called temporal rifts. That's where the drifters come from at night. When the rift activity is "calm", it's safe to stay out at night; • There are areas of the world that are temporally unstable, mainly in the underground. If you stay in these areas, your temporal gear will constantly drain; • Always create a way-point when you find some ore nuggets in the surface. There's more ore underground! ; • I think you missed a fruit tree in 55:45. You weren't looking at it, but is was that tree with a different, lighter foliage; • When planting crops, always consider if the crop will survive the temperature variation of the region. Each crop has its max resistance both to heat and cold. You can make a greenhouse to plant when it's colder, but it's generally not sufficient during winter; • Yes, you can make backpacks. They need leather, which is, let's say, not lengthy at all to obtain :) ; • The first great progression happens when you make your first metal tools. The second when you make an anvil and a saw, and the third when you acquire leather.

Vintage Story is one of those games that scratches an itch I didn't know I had when it comes to similar survival games, let alone Minecraft. It's got to be one of the best games I've played in this genre. Here's a few tips, from one Seraph to another; -As you might have noticed, the Help menu is your best friend. Always make sure to reference it whenever you get stuck on something or need some further elaboration. -The teal gear right in the middle of your HUD is your Temporal Stability. Think of it like a sanity meter, since this game does have some slight lovecraft themes as you've noticed with the drifters and the rifts. It mainly depletes when you're either standing in said rift or spent a long time underground or in certain chunks, and the lower it is the more dangerous monsters will spawn, the world becomes all wobbly and hard to navigate, and you even lose health if it's low enough. -Food Storage is a must when it comes to surviving winter. You have the right idea with making crocks, but you can go much further with it; making a cellar can help a lot with preserving food along with experimenting with different recipes, and making sealed crocks can bump up that preservation time even further if you have animal fat or bees wax (and yes, there's bees in this game and they can be a pain in the ass to get). -Metal working is just as in depth as the other mechanics in Vintage Story. If you want to get into it, there's both the help menu as well as plenty of videos on the subject. To help you get started, you'll want to find copper bits and collect about 20 to 40 of them (Be sure to mark where you find said bits, as the actual ore is often a few blocks below the ground if you need more copper). Then sculpt some pickaxe and hammer molds as well as a crucible. You'll also need some coal or charcoal to get your fire pit up to temperature. From there, make some tongs, throw the ingredients into the pit and you'll be on your way. -The Crouch key is going to be your main method of interacting with stuff as you've noticed. It extends to much more than just interacting with some things; You can make stockpiles of various things to help with storage, such as ingots or fire logs, clay molding, and so much more. The game does a really good job in explaining what keys you need to press and/or hold in order to interact with something so be sure to pay attention to them. -If you're up to it, you can look into the countless mods that have been made for the game. I recommend some quality of life mods such as Primitive Survival, Player Corpse, and Death Waypoints. -You can set a new spawn if you end up making a base far away from your original spawn. You'll need a Temporal Gear which you can get from Drifters, albeit rarely depending on the tier they are. Keep in mind that, unless you mess with a certain setting in the world configurations, the amount of spawns you get at your new spawn location is limited, around 20 or so. Once that runs out, you'll be sent back to your original spawning location the next time you die, so be sure to refresh it when your spawns run low. -Be sure to rotate your crops. Each crop you plant has different nutrient needs and whatever soil you use to farm can deplete on whatever nutrients the plant requires. If you want to make the most out of farming, variety is the key (that and higher quality soils such as Terra Preta. Be sure to keep an eye out for that when exploring). I could write a billion more tips, but the joy of vintage story is figuring things out to yourself. All of these are to help you hit the ground running, but go at your own pace. Glad to hear that you enjoy the game : D

I absolutely love Vintage Story. I love that it’s hard, there’s a lot to do, but it doesn’t make it feel grindy or redundant.

No spoilers, just one quick tip: Never sleep. Spend your nights doing what needs to be done indoors, and that includes reading the in-game wiki, which is quite extensive.

Really enjoyed this! Very fun to see someone figure out the first steps of this game. Restarting after you've got your bearings a bit is actually something that I'd recommend because otherwise you might have "wasted" too much time to survive winter, which requires a decent bit of preparation.

Nice - no shame in restarting to get a better spawn!. Might i suggest a gate to keep the drifters out of your yard? Also, look into a cellar in the guide for reducing the spoilage timer. At its most basic, a hole in the ground with dirt over the top of a storage vessel will do. Pressing 'H' while you hover over items in your inventory will show what they go into. Oh, and you can have multiple inventories open at the same time. So open your guide and then your crafting grid to see them side by sideish. Make sure you mark nuggets of copper on the map when you find them for later reference (also, check the keybinds for the minimap if you want to see it).

I can suggest two mods to you (and Vintage Story supports the Mod community amazingly well). The Mod, "Carry On" lets you build a reed chest and put it on your back. You have to take it off and place it on the ground to put anything into it or take anything out; it slows your sprint speed; and (IIRC) ticks up your hunger rate. However, it gives you a bunch of extra slots to stuff things into while out foraging, and it's not at all a game-breaker. Secondly, if you like even better terrain generation, try "Plains and Valleys." That "smooths out" the world generation and makes it far more realistic. Avoid the "Rivers" mod, though. It's not a bad "first cut," but it's not great -- especially with "Plains and Valleys" and of the two, the latter is a far better choice. I was surprised you made it through the first night, but then the odds caught up with you on the second day. For first-time players, multiple deaths in rapid succession *is* the Vintage Story experience. 😆 That said, staying close to your initial spawn point can be problematic. If you spawn in a forest, you need to get away *in a hurry* because bears and wolves also spawn in them. (Basically, if you see sticks, horsetails and blueberries, you're *in the wrong place* ....) Also, you need soil fertility that's at least medium, and rainfall that's at least "Common" (although "Very Common" is better, but "All The Time" is a bit much).

I've been playing Vintage Story (VS) since v1.5.5 in 2018, when the game still looked a lot like Minecraft, but they were already incorporating the Lore which made it similar, but different in those early stages. With each update, it looks less and less like vanilla Minecraft to me. And there is still so much more planned and look forward to! I feel the Lore really makes this game stand out from Minecraft. Minecraft really doesn't seem to have a definitive story and every player might come away with their own ideas of why there are undead, creepers, the various villages, the Illagers, the Warden, access to The Nether or The End. Killing the various mobs and bosses changes very little. It's more Sandbox than Story. Vintage Story currently takes you from the Stone Age to the Steel Age, but the technology is currently Medieval with touches of future tech in the Lore and some in-world items/areas. The title of the game gives you a hint. There is definitely something going on with the Rifts and Temporal Storms, but we currently have no idea what happened to the previous civilization(s), but the Lore gives us glimpses into the past. The more we read, the more we learn, and for some it makes us hunger for more information, since none of the ruins we find on the surface really support the idea that Rifts and Temporal Storms were normal in the past. I think the VS developers used their own experiences, looked around at other games, and asked other gamers what they liked/disliked about certain games. Being a small company, they were able to react to feedback, and now we have a game that has several toggles and sliders for various computer hardware capabilities, quality of game visuals and sounds, and accessibility tweaks. I think the developers really listened to the players and, to a point, tried to satisfy everyone; the combat players, the builders, the survival players, and those who just want to explore and find secrets. VS has several different Modes of play besides Survival and Creative. VS has a separate Customization screen, so players can tailor their world to their own play style. Good at combat, bad at mining? We've got drop down menus to make combat more difficult and mining easier. You don't want to deal with snow or rain, but still want lots of water? We can do that! You still want to play Survival, but don't want to deal with the Temporal stuff. We can turn it off while keeping the Lore available. Oh, you don't want anything to do with the Temporal stuff or the Lore? Let's go back and change your Mode and then come back to the Customization screen. You've played the vanilla game, and now you want to check out the mods? There is a tab on the Home Page that will lead you right to it. You can make sure you only look at mods for the current game version. You can look at mods that have the Technology, Magic, or Food tag to name a few. You can even follow mods so you'll know when they update. You can click on a creator's name and find out what other mods they've made, or look for their name in the drop-down menu. And you can find out if a mod is client side only or for servers. And if you're looking for a server, but don't know where to start, the VS Home Page has a link for that, too. All you need to know is one website and everything Vintage Story is on it. Super simple. We just got the 1.20-pre1 update to preview and test the newest features before it's released as a 1.20.x stable. Time to learn the basics!!
