Dialysis Catheter Tips: Things to Know
Catheters are great. They give you immediate access to the patients blood. And you never miss!
Long term: catheters increase risks of infection to the patient. Catheters are also not always perfect. This video talks about clinical pearls I have learned about dialysis catheters.

Just listened to your video. I think any patient who has you as a nurse, is indeed well looked after. I have been on dialysis 4 years!

I have ESRD. Been on dialysis for a few months via a catheter. I just had vein mapping and I'm waiting for placement of a fistula. IMO it's safer and will allow me to bathe and swim. The risk of infection with the catheter is higher than for a fistula. I've had sepsis and I've had MRSA. Infections are awful and very hard to fight back from.

I am my husband’s caretaker watching this video makes me extremely nervous. I never had heard of a gpa. That has not been discussed with me as of yet. We have been at this dialysis for 2months now. I’m okay at it but I am not a nurse. We are doing this at home.

Will the catheter on the chest fall off and cause bleeding?
@dialysisnurselindsey
@dialysisnurselindsey 2 жыл бұрын
It is stitched in. It can be accidentally pulled out with tugging or pulling

If it gets pulled out, yes, it can cause bleeding

Tunnelled catheters are only stitched in (with stitches) the first few weeks after placement. Then these stitches are removed. However, tunnelled catheter have a small sleeve/cuff that is pulled subcutaneously. The surrounding tissue adheres to this cuff, making sure the catheter stays in place. In some patients however this adherence does not happen. Then, nurses can use an external locking device such as a Stat-Lock to help keep the catheter in place.

I'm 40 years old, and I've been on dialysis since 2008... I had one catheter done on my chest while my fistula was maturing, and then they started using fistula, and I had my catheter removed. It lasted 3 years and went back on getting a catheter on the other side of my chest, then another fistula was done on the upper arm, and it had worked perfectly; but now 10 years after still works, however the sking has becoming pink and my nephrologist suggested to replaced it with a graft and have another cather but my groin area. Personally, I'm not thrilled with the idea of it because I sweat too much in that area. In conclusion, after not having a catheter on either side on my chest, can it be redone there?

Great questions. And the answer isn’t always clear. Catheters can be replaced, but sometimes there is scar tissue or other blockage that won’t let the catheter thru. If that’s the case
