Check out the new Diamond Mounter merch!
cbilton.creato... A quick but full instructional guide to make a simple 4 claw collet.
Being able to hand make a good 4 claw is an essential skill for a jeweller.
It can be made as an earring, a pendant or ring setting so very versatile.
Not too difficult but as always working neatly and accurately are very important. I think the ability to make one the exact size required for a specific stone may be the tricky part for someone trying for the first time. This video guides you through the entire process to make one correctly.
The depth of the stone you are making a collet for will effect the width of metal needed for the bezel but the techniques I teach for positioning the claws and soldering them on accurately are universal and can be applied on any round or square collet. Ovals and emerald cuts differ slightly.
I have recently join Patreon!
This channel has potential to grow in to a great archive of jewellers knowledge with your help.
With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
With nearly 25 years of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in High Street jewellers workshops.
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street shop model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter KZbin channel and now after nearly 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too! This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.
If you may be interested in becoming a patron and supporting the channel to help it grow please click the link below to go to the Patreon website and find out about all the benefits that come with being a Diamond Mounter patron.

There is now a new entry level tier which costs just £1 a month.
Its named the supporter tier which allows you to support the channel with out any substantial financial obligation. I will thank you personally on the next Diamond Mounter video uploaded!
I hope you will consider becoming a patron.
Thank you,
C.Bilton
With this channel I will share with you methods and techniques I have learned over the previous 24 years as a professional jeweller.
I specialize in high end bespoke pieces made the old fashioned way by hand.
I wish to document everything I know, continue to learn and make accessible to everyone rare skills and techniques only usually taught in high security jewellers workshops.

i’ve been soldering with flame and whatnot for months now, and this is the next step for me. i got into metal jewelary working because when my grandpa died he left me with some precious faceted gemstones. learning how to set them and make a ring for my grandma out of them is going to be so special. thank you for your teaching. 💕

Keep up the great work, your way of explaining stuff, combined with your personality is great I never get bored watching your videos! As I am an apprentice it helps instead of as you mentioned in another video old men making scribbles on bits of paper! 😂👌👍🏽

Thank you so much! Did you use medium or hard solder? I have problems to solder the ring on to the bezel without the claws coming of. Very frustrating. :(

I’ve heard you mention “fraizing” cylinders in a couple of videos for cutting the groove for the claw - where can i get these?

any jewellery tool supply store will have them. Try Cooksons UK or HS Walsh and search for 'burrs'

Like your comment, “ give me a bloody file that works”. It’s hard to throw away a worn out file, surely there will be a use for it.😀

Great video! Curious if you are using 4 different solders for each prong or how you are preventing the previous solder from melting again? Thanks!

This was a charming and informative video, thank you very much! This is the first video I've watched on your channel, I'm assuming soldering is covered elsewhere?

Thank you for sharing! I'm an artist, but I would love to learn all the building blocks to making high jewellery, and I was wondering if you could suggest a place where I could be an apprentice or courses where I could learn properly? If not, no worries :)

Where can I find the silver you used as the bottom of the collet? Is that sheet metal cut like that or is it perhaps wire? What is a good thickness to use? Any help appreciated!!!

I was wondering the thickness as well. At least enough to cut into for frazing the claw spots I imagine. Going to try one this weekend!

It's good, but it's not really a full instructional video if it doesn't show how to solder, etc. Puts me off becoming a Patreon, because you'd get the confidence to make this but then fail because half the instructions are actually missing. No tools detailed either and minimal response to questions in the comments here. Is it any different on your Patreon? Hoping so.

Usually only people who can already do some basic jewellery making would attempt to make a collet. As an example I wouldn't advise attempting to change the brakes on your car if you dont already know how to use a spanner. The videos do include advice for using specific tools and techniques though.
