I’m digging the nostalgic tv theme tune!

Bill Nye was Science Teacher in Southern California. He sort of invented his zany teaching style to make science less boring to middle school students. He had a great run, but I am NOT sure if ) lmg le is still on TV. The Bill Nye comidien guy, appeared to be an imitation, a fake. I am watching on my cell phone so the image is really small and I can't tell.

He was never meant to be a comedian, he was however amazing at getting 8 to 14 year olds engaged in scientific curiosity. His scientific authority was never the point, generating interest at a time when nobody, i mean nobody, in North America was pushing against the hate for geeks in school. The 90s were not fun for academic minded kids, their torture is well documented in pop culture, but he gave them some refuge. The editing similarities can be traced to the kids who watched this, raising kids who watched icarly, to the explosion of social media without much history research. I liked Bill Nye as a kid because he made science fun in a real world way. For many kids, science is a daunting concept, particularly with all the data that is involved in scientific research. Personally, I loved chemistry and physics in school. Didn't really care much for biology, though. For some reason that particular subject just didn't click (for lack of a better term).

Mr. Wizard, the screen name of Don Herbert, hosted a low budget science show for kids in the 1950s when I was a child. The show was almost entirely filmed in studio, a typical home setting in which several child actors visited and did the experiments under his direction. The show was gone by the time I was in Junior High (Middle) school, but it was rebooted on the Nickelodeon cable network in the 1990s, when my son was at the age to enjoy it. Mr. Herbert was still youthful looking, with the same low key personality, but the home style segments were interspersed with more stock films such as spacecraft launches, etc. And of course, all in color. The Professor Proton character, played by the late great Bob Newhart, would have been on the air in the time portrayed, when Sheldon was a child, and was based on the second era of Mr. Wizard. When the Big Bang Theory was being produced, for some reason Don Herbert could not be a guest star (I think he may have been deceased by them), so they cast Bob Newhart as the older, retired Professor Proton with the adult Sheldon.

tltatt Good to know. I thought I heard an obituary in the last year or two. I hope he has a happy, healthy, and long retirement. I don’t know what happened to Don Herbert (Mr. Wizard), but he was much older, and died in 2007 (born in 1917). For this and possibly for legal reasons, the TBBT producers made up a show and character “a bit like” Mr. Wizard.

Just finished the video. hahaha, looked like you had a good bit of fun watching it! This show is EASILY one of my childhood faves!! My class in 3rd grade watched him weekly, pretty much. Wanna know what the coolest bit was?! I lived like an hour away from Seattle.. that's where this show was filmed each week!! Though, I wasn't able to go to the show ever.. I don't care though. haha, still very happy that I watched it. I learned so many cool and interesting things over the years.

Bill Nye "The Science Guy" actually started on a local TV show here in Seattle. Lots of inside Seattle area jokes that most likely wouldn't make any sense to anyone not from here. Bill was in two recurring sets, The science guy, where is experiments were always at least amusing and "Speed Walker". a crime fighter that got everywhere by speed walking. If you'd like to check it out the show was titled "Almost Live" and you may see some other cast members you recognize.

The format was a lesson about the basics of a science topic, a hands-on experiment, and then an example of how it can be used in a career. That is a reasonably good way to present science to kids, despite the 90s cheesiness of the show. I loved Bill as a kid.

10:22 An anvil is primarily used in the blacksmithing trade. It's usually made of cast steel and before welding was a thing, an anvil was used in the forging of swords, armor, even horseshoes. As for size, they're as large as is practical. The higher their inertia, the more efficiently energy from a striking tool (like a hammer) is transferred to the work piece (like a shield or breastplate).

Bill Nye was big for us american kids in the 90's, not because it was on tv, but because it was often shown in actual science class in school - and when you're stuck in a boring class learning about all these big words like photosynthesis, getting to sit back and watch bill nye was far more entertaining than reading from a textbook. Any time Bill Nye came on, we were thrilled - so a lot of us remember him fondly. I'm 36 now, and I'd still sit down and watch some Bill Nye if someone asked me if I wanted to. lol
