The Bears have to sell to the candidates that they’re not the disfunctional clown-car organization that the rest of the league thinks they are.

Actually this time around they are very attractive. You got Caleb who’s going to be a top qb. That’s job security for a coach The roster is a playoff or close to it meaning no rebuild. You are 80 million below the salary so the HC can sign anyone and almost everyone he wants You will have three top 41 draft picks as well This is a great situation for a coach and the ownership has shown their unwillingness to fire people. The ownership’s problem isn’t meddling it’s hiring the right coach

There was an analysis done that showed college QBs who start for 3 years adapt and adjust quicker and better to the NFL. Bo Nix, Penix, Maye, etc all were 3-year starters in college. So, some of it is coaching, some of it is the players cumulative experience.
@tonyk73873 күн бұрын
I mean I agree with you that it's a factor. But drake maye wasn't a 3 year starter. He threw 10 total passes his first year. However, Caleb basically started 3 years in college. Tim Jenkins, who has his own podcast, as well as guest appearances on CHGO and 670 the score, broke it down well. It's quite likely that footwork and tying the feet to the pass concept has never been pushed on Caleb at any point of his career bc he's been so physically gifted biomechanically, throwing the ball with insane arm angles and on the run full speed. So he's gotten by just fine without coaches putting a premium on footwork. But now he's in the NFL and a timing based offense is all about footwork. So the fact that he's suddenly inaccurate when he was touted as very accurate in college is most likely bc of that. It's on the record that Shane Waldron didn't put importance on footwork in training camp which is insane when you are developing a rookie QB. From day 1 they set him and themselves back bc of that. Which is why hiring Ben Johnson would be huge bc his offense is very timing based and you best believe it would be at the top of the list if not the very first thing on the list of things that need to be addressed and hammered into Caleb's off-season work. I would love someone like Vrabel for the culture and toughness but do I have faith that Vrabel will know exactly what he needs to push Caleb on to get the best out of him? No I do not. Could Caleb already be preparing his own off-season plan that involves footwork and pass concepts being tied to said footwork? I sure hope so. He's mentioned it once or twice in his pressers. But Jesus man, can we plz just hire the perfect person to spearhead it with him so that we can unlock the player we all know he can be based off of what he's already shown in college and the league. I'm praying they hire Ben J.
@ehansbrough5933 күн бұрын
@tonyk7387 Fair point on Maye. Caleb started at best 2.5 years - he took over QB1 in the latter half of his freshman year. I watched Caleb all throughout his time at USC. You make some good points, esp about his eyes and foot work. I have a somewhat different take on why he is having some growing pains. A.) I think that Waldron's system is a terrible fit for Caleb's strengths. Caleb is a vertical passer - he excels at throwing the ball down field. He has always been more accurate throwing the ball 20+ yds. than 10 yds or fewer. This dink and dunk, bubble screens, etc. It's never been his strong suit and it's a terrible waste of his supreme arm talent (only Lamar and Joe Burrow are in his arm talent league). B.) Caleb is better at rolling out and throwing on the move and making off platform throws vs being a traditional PP. Given the Bears OL is not always stout, the OC needs to design plays for Caleb to roll out or move the pocket. C.) I also think the Bears should run more tempo to get Caleb in rhythm. He is absolutely lethal - no one could stop USC, when we played uptempo. D.) Caleb has a couple of rookie habits that he must break. He held onto the ball wayyy too long at USC, like 8 secs per play. That bad habit has carried over to the Pros He needs to learn to play on time/on schedule. At USC, he loved to run around and buy time until the WR that he wanted to throw to came open. He obviously needs to minimize that habit too. He has to learn to get through his progressions faster and be decisive, instead of waiting for things to develop. I prefer a defensive-minded Coach, like Vrabel or B. Flo. You can bring a QB savvy OC like a Josh McCown, etc. I am totally against hiring someone with zero HFC experience. You may get lucky, but most of the time you won't. Vrabel did an incredible job with the Titans, and he was one Elite QB away from contending for the Super Bowl. Caleb is that Dude. He just needs a better system that plays to his strengths and better coaching.
@tonyk7387Күн бұрын
@ehansbrough593 yeah I hear you man. I just worry that if we hire Vrabel that the OC he brings in won't be good enough. At least with B Flo I know someone like Josh McCown could be super helpful for a QB. At least with Ben J i know that the QB play will improve from many angles. Timing, reducing sacks, play calling etc. Not to mention he would almost certainly bring over the o line coach to be his OC. Which the bears desperately need.. a good o line coach. I'm so tired of Chris Morgan and not seeing any development of our players on the line. Can't believe they promoted him to run game coordinator lmao. Although I will say that with Vrabel, the entire team will play hard as fuck and it could end up working out anyways even if they don't have the best OC. It would just be more on Caleb to figure it out himself as far as footwork, etc. we shall see. I'll be happy with either Ben J or Vrabel. Flores would be interesting. If he brings MCcown then I'd like it more. But he wasn't good for Tua in the past so he would have to show he's learned from those mistakes.
@jimsnyder6310Күн бұрын
The analysis is not good. Playing games is just one variable. There is literally a million other confounding variables.
@ehansbrough59322 сағат бұрын
@jimsnyder6310 The analysis didn't suggest that playing games was the Only factor. It demonstrated that there is a strong correlation between the number of games started in CFB and how quickly QBs adjust to playing in the NFL. Of course, there are many other factors at play - quality and stability of the organization that you get drafted into, quality of the coaching staff, the talent around you - OL and playmakers, the scheme, and individual QB's factors (development, maturity, work habits, so on) etc etc

Bears need to draft 2 OL in the the first 3 picks and buy 2 more starters. Stop chasing WRs and RBs.
@jimsnyder6310Күн бұрын
Why are they drafting OL? They did that the past three years. Why don't they buy a FA lineman? Won't there be a learning process that comes with another rookie lineman? I think the draft is best used for the glamor positions. Linemen are not a clear choice from their college resumés. It has been proven over and over again.

I think one thing that speaks volumes is the multiple coaches around the league seeing they see the talent and a franchise QB in Caleb. No more we just drafted the wrong guy or he just isn’t a good QB. If Caleb ends up not being our franchise QB this is 1000% on the Bears. We ruin this QB and I’m done with this team until it’s either sold or there is some wild unheard of changes.

They think if a team is succeeding it is all due to a QB. It's the hero worship phenomenon that the NFL PR staff successfully campaigns every year. It's funny because of the fact that they are praising mediocre players just because they are on good teams. Truth is that the QB is not the essential piece in the modern offense. If he can throw 5 yards accurately, you can be successful in those offenses. Hero ball is a thing of the past (Mahomes is the last one).
@robindevily9182Күн бұрын
@ mahomes has an excellent offfense he’s always had a hall of fame recieving tight end at maximum and a fantastic offensive genius head coach and when the offense wasn’t the best they had a defense shutting teams out for an entire half Mahomes is all time great but he doesn’t do it alone at all Baker is better than Sam and fields is better then both but the point is that you need a good oc amf support Lamar - Roman Tua McDaniels Jalen Steichen Josh - daboll These men had questions about them then they got not only upgraded to their teams by Oc’s that believed in them and built around them with good support You can’t use a guy wrong put him I. A crazily organization with two fail coaches and a torn down team and tell me that a mvp history making qb is the problem he’s the one that just can’t do it. That’s the point organizations deserve more heat and if they got it more qbs would actually be given the chance to thrive more organizations ruin qbs than QBs organization Fields should be our guy and I’ll never forget what Chicago did to the first great qb talent they actually drafted
