Diarmaid MacCulloch discusses G.R. Elton’s 'England Under the Tudors'

Geoffrey Elton (1921 - 1994) was one of the great historians of the Tudor period. 'England Under the Tudors' is his major work and an outstanding history of a crucial and turbulent period in British and European history. Revised several times since its first publication in 1955 'England Under the Tudors' charts a historical period that witnessed monumental changes in religion, monarchy, and government - and one that continued to shape British history long after.

Diarmaid states it was a standard textbook in to the 60s and 70s - go further! My A-Level history teacher gave us each a copy of Elton in 1991 as we started our course. He’d been one of Elton’s undergraduates at Cambridge in the 1950s when Elton was a younger academic star and was obviously in awe of him! He said if we were only to read one book, it was this one!

MacCulloch is right, of course, to stress Thomas Cromwell as the hero of Elton's narrative. But Elton also writes thrillingly towards the end of the book about Raleigh, Drake and the origins of English colonialism.
