Excellent video. I am now 22 days post op anterior hip replacement. Same day return home from surgery center. Do not rush recovery. Hips heal without much pt. Walk as tolerated, elevate and ice. I slept in a recliner for the first week, then moved to my bed sleeping on my back. Narcotic pain meds for first three days and then Tylenol and Celebrex.. I am now walking without aids and no limp but careful not to push too fast. My age is 78 and this is my second hip replacement. The surgery is major and the body needs time to recover so be patient.

I gotta say though the hardest part is a week or two after the surgery. It was the most difficult and painful part of the process and it is very important to have someone there to help you because you can’t do it alone. I constantly moved around with Walker to prevent blood clots. Oh yeah, taking a shower is going to be a challenge and make sure to get the sock puller upper.😊

For me, it is just the first round... I need to do the other hip replacement and wandering how much time it will take to forget the pain and all the incoveniences (for example, it was driving me crazy when I walked with a walker not being able to carry anything from one room to another).

Can I ask how old your husband was at time of surgery. Dr wants to do hip replacement on me I'm terrified. I'm 62 and I have bone on bone. Osteoarthritis, torn acl and meniscus in both knees. I have so much pain in moving my n right leg. Hip injection has helped for a couple months. But...I just had foot surgery 6weeks ago and have been no weight bearing so had to depend on my right leg. I'm so frustrated with this foot surgery because I've lost my independence and I'm very depressed. So anything you might know please tell me. I'm not wanting the surgery but if my pain doesn't get better that's what will happen

Thanks for this. I am 4 weeks out from total knee replacement. Looks like either surgery is HARD. My doctor emphasized that full recovery is 12 months and it looks like a similar path for hip replacement. I can see I have made a lot of progress so far, but there is more to go. I remind myself “I can do hard things”.

I can’t express how grateful I am for you and this video! I’m 8 days post-op, left anterior hip replacement. All over KZbin I kept seeing these stories of super-fast recoveries from anterior hip replacement. I was expecting to be off the walker in less than a week. I wasn’t expecting the thigh pain, the stiffness, and all the rest. I am so grateful to see your slow, steady progress. ❤

I’m so glad my experience helped you. I was also so shocked at how difficult my first 10 days were! Even now, 2-3 years later, I don’t have complete strength and flexibility in that hip, but I’m pain free and can walk without a limp! I’m sure if I did more consistent PT longer, I would be stronger -although my surgeon said that hip may never be 100% like the other. I can live with that!!

A small tip for people who are having trouble getting in and out of bed and have a hard time using the leg lift strap- I sat at the end of my bed and scooted backwards, using my arms and non-surgical leg to propel myself in small scoots, backwards, into my bed. Then as I scooted back, the bed itself lifted up my surgical leg for me. It was a lifesaver when my caretakers were not present to help put the lifting strap on my foot❤ I figured out how to do it, out of necessity, after my labral repair surgery. And then 13 years later, I practiced doing it before my total hip replacement, to make sure that my shoulders and arms were strong and stable enough to help propel my body backwards onto the bed again. If you are currently pre-surgery, you may want to practice this technique, just in case.

I have a high bed. I haven't had hip surgery yet, neither is it scheduled. But my hip has taken a turn .... to pain. Dr said my xrays show that I'm there, but only when I can't live with pain. I have a step stool and hopefully before I get surgery, I will practice getting into the bed, or actually, I might use a spare bedroom with lower bed. But that was a good suggestion altho my main bed has a footboard. Thanks to all discussing their experiences. I am currently dieting as I really need to loose weight before this ever happens.
@deannad9105
@deannad9105 Жыл бұрын
@@cruisingal2 If you love your bed, consider removing the footboard before surgery♥️ If your hip gets worse and you cannot tolerate traditional exercise as well, I suggest water physical therapy (or classes if you are near any), especially in a heated pool. It helps keep you moving and active, while taking the strain off your joints. I did it when I broke my other leg, while waiting for my hip replacement surgery. It was so helpful. And good luck with your healing. I hope you find relief soon♥️

I had some complications and they kept me 4 days in the hospital. The next morning when I asked how to get my leg up to my bed as I live alone, no one even tried to answer that question. I invented a method that is unique as I could not do it the first night at home... it was really scary. There was no mercy for me living in a big city and having my suegry in a busy hospital. What a gift it was to find your video diary this evening. I head in for THA (L) in 5 hours. I cannot wait. It’s been a fairly rapid decline for my hip. I had a TKA (L) in March 2022. I was recovering from that really well. . . until I woke up in late-December with throbbing pain in the left hip, groin pain, just the works. A cortisone injection in January did nothing. Spent March through September in PT. The grating and grinding in the joint grew steadily more pronounced and painful over the course of the year. I’ve managed to stay fairly active with Pilates and occasional walks up until a week ago. Hoping that serves me well. Hoping, too, that this procedure gives me an opportunity to reclaim my life. These last three days pre-op with no NSAIDs have been tough. It is time. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. It is a lovely inspiration.

I want to get back to "normal" as much as it can be for a 70 year old man ... which is bowling in my leagues twice a week and every other Saturday (I'm a 200+ average), working on our two race cars during the Spring and Summer months, and long weekends of camping with my wife and grandkids from time to time. Fingers crossed ... then three or four months down the road it will maybe be time to replace my right knee. This has happened 6 times in 3 days. I was trying to be conservative with the medication. I really did myself a disservice and am still trying to get control over the pain. Walking around the block the day after surgery, and back to work doing construction in 13 days. No PT or rehabilitation. It was amazing. Dealt with leg swelling for about a week. No problem. I think that the last time I was in hospital was when I was 6, so the unknown was scary. But it was painless. Had a sort of epidural but had screen between op and head! Having just found your video and watching your progress its beenn a great help in helping me to decide to go ahead with my surgery, although this will be my 2nd on same leg which was done when was about 47, 83 this year, I was not intending to have it done. I was born with a dislocated left hip partial socket not found out until i was 3 years old because I skipped along rather than walked, suffered dreadful pain throughout my years never was given any pain relief until I was about 44. MY mother would massage warm olive oil into it .When it was replaced It was called a Charly replacement had to be sent to a hospital in another town as the surgeon was the only one who could perform the op. I had to lie on my back for two weeks before being allowed out of bed, hence the clot on my lung andthe pain of that operation is etched in my mind but seeing your excellent step by step progress has given me the confidence to go ahead and get it done .I had a total kneee replacement in October 23 on other leg you won't believe my luck 😂 after it was completed and the knee was being routinely bent the kneecap exploded and the surgeon had to go back in and repair it so instead of 3 days in hospital I was 4 weeks ans in a brace 8 weeks so not the luckiest of candidates but coming along nicely now .My hip is ready to collapse and i'm on the list, but I was weighing up do I put up with it or give myself a chance of relief for how many years I've left, so knowing if I exercise like you I could achieve better quality of life so really appreciate you taking the time to do this to help others ,thanks again.

Thank you for your story! I can relate. I'm 63 years old and went several years with terrible left hip pain and lower back pain. I've had five back surgeries and will need another one. I will be having my right hip replaced on May 23rd. Although I am sick of surgery and hospitals, my experience with the anterior hip replacement was great! I think it was because I was very active prior to the surgery, working out three times a week. Of course, as the pain increased, I modified my workouts, but I kept at it. Believe or not, I'm looking forward to get the right hip replaced. My left hip healed very quickly although the outside of my thigh is a little numb and I do have some pain on the left side in the mornings. I was told that it takes about two years for complete healing. My sister who is two years older had both hips and knees replaced in 2020 and 2021. After the first hip replacement, she wasn't healing and it was discovered that her femur broke, so she had a revision which has caused some issues. Falling was not the cause of the break. Apparently she has weak bones and it just happened. Again thank you for your story. It is important to let people know our experiences with this procedure. I think it can lessen fear!

Ask a physical therapist if you can....and also maybe have your leg lengths checked... I've heard some people have found that one leg is slightly shorter and they need shoe orthotic inserts to help balance out.

Thank you for this inspiring video. My husband broke his hip (femur) Aug 12,’23 and had a rod and nail placed. Was doing pretty good with therapy but then in October he fell off an electric scooter onto the same hip cracking his acetabulum. 4 Trauma doctors decided against any surgery hoping that 12 weeks of non weight bearing would “heal” the socket/acetabulum. 10 weeks in he was hardly able to walk at all even with a walker, much less a cane. Fast forward to today - Feb., 9, ‘24 and we have obtained a second opinion from a new Orthopedist, and Total Hip Replacement has been requested by us, agreed upon by the doctor and scheduled for next week, Feb., 16. We PRAY this will be the answer to his EVER walking again. We have all the confidence in our doctor and Faith in God. Congratulations on your journey and continued healing. Thank you for your time.

I have had three hip replacement’s. My hips were not smooth in the joints and we’re making a popping sound when I would bend over and stand back up, and started to ache all the time. So it was double hip resurfacing which gives it a new socket and resurface of the femoral head . Had one done in June 2017 then got that left leg in shape by walking and knew I had to get it ready for the right to be done. Had the right done went great but then rolled over in bed to have my husband rub my leg dipped my knee inward (a no no that after it happened I read it on the hand out of what not to do.before two weeks)and felt a immediate pow from my hip to my foot…next day my husband said it’s swelling. 2am went to bathroom , and stepped with left then right and heard a clunk( had read about clunking on hip devices, then left step then right and it gave way and the device moved and broke my femur and like in slow motion landed on my butt didn’t hit anything on the way down in my mind as I was going down I thought it’s already failing? The device does not have time for bone to grow into it… if it has been a little over a week since surgery. Yell for my husband upstairs and said what happened and said I can’t stand on it… he got the walker in front of me and he said get your good leg ready and got me up lifting me up like a baby….1 1/2 hour drive and I didn’t have pain not from 2am to surgery 11 am next day… he did give me 2 pain pills because he wasn’t sure if I would go into shock, as soon as we got out on the main road I started singing the joy of the Lord is my strength :). We got there and they put in a full hip and I was good. I really didn’t have much pain with hip replacement . My one scar looks good but the one with double surgery is a little puckered but I don’t care I just know they don’t ache. Soon I’m getting a TKR right April 18th and then March 2025 the left and I hear those are more painful but I’m a bit of an anomaly at least one doctor told me that. The one thing my hip doctor told me to do is get out there and move walk to prevent blood clots. I will be bionic kat

I am seeing my journey all over again and realizing now how much progress we both made so quickly. Thank you for taking us on such an amazing journey and recap of how things were and I can very much appreciate the progress that we have both made. Thank you Sherri. I appreciate you sharing your journey with all of us. Finally I get to see a realistic account of what it’s like to recover from hip surgery. In June I’m having my first hip replacement and the second one will be after I recover. You put my mind at ease and gave me a realistic look at what to expect. I kept looking at videos of people who was walking after 2 days without pain or stiffness. Congratulations on your healing. I enjoyed watching your cat and your husband is so supportive. Beautiful home. Thank you again.

Dear Sherri, Ohmygosh I am so happy to have found you - a very positive take on the anterior surgery in a sea of hip replacement videos. Though my doctor has put me on the waiting list for a replacement (here in Norway the wait is long🇳🇴), I am still on the fence. I am 69 years of age and I can hardly walk without pain, I’m still able to conduct 3 yoga classes each week (haha, I just omit pigeon pose and a few balancing asanas on the effected side) with little trouble. My fear is not being able to get back to teaching for fear of reduced mobility in a replacement ball socket. I will subscribe to your very lovely channel to see what more you have to impart on this subject that affects so many. So many thanks to you for this rare insight!🙏🏽

Hi Danielle. Glad my video gives you hope. I would think you could go back to yoga (possibly modified) after a full recovery period of your new joint and tissues/muscles, but your doctor can tell you best! The internet does seem to be all over the place on what moves you may need to modify, but in my opinion, it's worth being out of pain and not limping all the time!! I hope your surgery date is sooner than later. I do pilates now and some very gentle yoga. Please do LMK how it goes for you!!

Glad it helped, thanks for watching! My doctors always said to wait as long as I could until it majorly affected my quality of life -- because 1) medical advances were happening all the time and you want to get the best option available when you do it and 2) if they only last 20 years or so, you want to wait it out!

Thanks, Sherri for sharing your journy of your THA. I just had one about a week ago. I was told that the surgery went well. Because I had medication around the incision and didn't have a spinal I didn't feel so bad. Getting in and out of the car was quite a fete!!! Because I am obese I've been having a very hard time getting in the bed because at the age of 75, and with little upper body strength, I have to have help. I hate it because I am unable to help myself. When I get inbed, I'm stuck and can't move. My leg is so heavy. I lay in bed and cry most of the night because I'm so uncomfortable. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can make it better physically so that I'm able to get some sleep? I'm about to scream. Now what good would that do? Thank you, and continued success.
@SherrisWorld
@SherrisWorld 10 ай бұрын
@@1948bibi In so sorry to hear about your stressful nights. Not sleeping well is the WORST. Has your doctor given you meds to help you sleep at night without pain? I could not move my leg either… it was so heavy and weak, but with the use of a strap, I could carefully move it to the edge of the bed where I could then grab my walker. And can a friend get a portapotty to put next to the bed so you don’t have far to walk? Do the heel slides and whatever exercises they told you to do. You will get stronger faster with the right therapy. Hang in there. The first few weeks, it was a roller coaster of pain and frustrations, but it will get better!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Due to my Rheumatoid Arthritis since age 20, I’m 51 now, I had 4 joint replacement surgeries from ages 45-49. In order: R knee 11/2019,L hip 3/2021, L knee 11/2022, and R hip 3/2023. The knees were probably the hardest to get through. Pain was brutal and PT those first few weeks were 😓. Hips, easy recovery. By 8 weeks I was back to yoga and by 12 weeks back to Pilates.

thank you for the video diary. It is so helpful to see and hear your journey. I'm beginning to realize that it was wise to have both hips replaced before they put me in a wheelchair. Yoga hurt but I pushed because the alternative was doing nothing and I would not do that. I did yoga right up until my 1st surgery 6 months ago. I waited 2 months and did the second. I'm back to yoga and weightlifting and slowly getting back my flexibility. Hopefully at the one year mark in March 2023 I will have forgotten all about my hips and will be rollerblading in the park.
