I gotta say though the hardest part is a week or two after the surgery. It was the most difficult and painful part of the process and it is very important to have someone there to help you because you can’t do it alone. I constantly moved around with Walker to prevent blood clots. Oh yeah, taking a shower is going to be a challenge and make sure to get the sock puller upper.😊

Thank you for sharing ❤ I’m a 72 year old woman who just found out I’ll eventually need a hip replacement due to arthritis. I’m scared out of my mind! Your video really helped. I’m doing my homework and watching as many recovery videos that I can. I’m single and probably will go into a medical rehab for as many days that I can and get a caregiver for when I get home, plus meals on wheels. Take care, you look great.

Don't be scared. I'm the one above who had so much trouble with my replacement, but I would definitely do it again on my other hip if I have to. I am also alone. There are so many services where I live, and I bet where you live also. Going to a rehab facility will be great. You'll get all your physical therapy, and you will be treated like a queen -- no laundry, cooking, cleaning, vacuuming! What could be better! Just try your best, and don't be scared. I'll be with you in spirit.

Can I ask how old your husband was at time of surgery. Dr wants to do hip replacement on me I'm terrified. I'm 62 and I have bone on bone. Osteoarthritis, torn acl and meniscus in both knees. I have so much pain in moving my n right leg. Hip injection has helped for a couple months. But...I just had foot surgery 6weeks ago and have been no weight bearing so had to depend on my right leg. I'm so frustrated with this foot surgery because I've lost my independence and I'm very depressed. So anything you might know please tell me. I'm not wanting the surgery but if my pain doesn't get better that's what will happen

Thanks for this. I am 4 weeks out from total knee replacement. Looks like either surgery is HARD. My doctor emphasized that full recovery is 12 months and it looks like a similar path for hip replacement. I can see I have made a lot of progress so far, but there is more to go. I remind myself “I can do hard things”.

A small tip for people who are having trouble getting in and out of bed and have a hard time using the leg lift strap- I sat at the end of my bed and scooted backwards, using my arms and non-surgical leg to propel myself in small scoots, backwards, into my bed. Then as I scooted back, the bed itself lifted up my surgical leg for me. It was a lifesaver when my caretakers were not present to help put the lifting strap on my foot❤ I figured out how to do it, out of necessity, after my labral repair surgery. And then 13 years later, I practiced doing it before my total hip replacement, to make sure that my shoulders and arms were strong and stable enough to help propel my body backwards onto the bed again. If you are currently pre-surgery, you may want to practice this technique, just in case.

I have a high bed. I haven't had hip surgery yet, neither is it scheduled. But my hip has taken a turn .... to pain. Dr said my xrays show that I'm there, but only when I can't live with pain. I have a step stool and hopefully before I get surgery, I will practice getting into the bed, or actually, I might use a spare bedroom with lower bed. But that was a good suggestion altho my main bed has a footboard. Thanks to all discussing their experiences. I am currently dieting as I really need to loose weight before this ever happens.
@deannad9105
@deannad9105 4 ай бұрын
@@cruisingal2 If you love your bed, consider removing the footboard before surgery♥️ If your hip gets worse and you cannot tolerate traditional exercise as well, I suggest water physical therapy (or classes if you are near any), especially in a heated pool. It helps keep you moving and active, while taking the strain off your joints. I did it when I broke my other leg, while waiting for my hip replacement surgery. It was so helpful. And good luck with your healing. I hope you find relief soon♥️

What a gift it was to find your video diary this evening. I head in for THA (L) in 5 hours. I cannot wait. It’s been a fairly rapid decline for my hip. I had a TKA (L) in March 2022. I was recovering from that really well. . . until I woke up in late-December with throbbing pain in the left hip, groin pain, just the works. A cortisone injection in January did nothing. Spent March through September in PT. The grating and grinding in the joint grew steadily more pronounced and painful over the course of the year. I’ve managed to stay fairly active with Pilates and occasional walks up until a week ago. Hoping that serves me well. Hoping, too, that this procedure gives me an opportunity to reclaim my life. These last three days pre-op with no NSAIDs have been tough. It is time. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. It is a lovely inspiration.

Had to pay since our nhs waiting list was 12-15months and I had been getting worse. Had been fearful of everything to do with the hospital stay. I think that the last time I was in hospital was when I was 6, so the unknown was scary. But it was painless. Had a sort of epidural but had screen between op and head! Gave me something to relax and enjoyed listening to sinead O'connor! If you are struggling, don't be scared and get it done. Am on to exercises now. Tired but on the mend on crutches.

Thank you for your story! I can relate. I'm 63 years old and went several years with terrible left hip pain and lower back pain. I've had five back surgeries and will need another one. I will be having my right hip replaced on May 23rd. Although I am sick of surgery and hospitals, my experience with the anterior hip replacement was great! I think it was because I was very active prior to the surgery, working out three times a week. Of course, as the pain increased, I modified my workouts, but I kept at it. Believe or not, I'm looking forward to get the right hip replaced. My left hip healed very quickly although the outside of my thigh is a little numb and I do have some pain on the left side in the mornings. I was told that it takes about two years for complete healing. My sister who is two years older had both hips and knees replaced in 2020 and 2021. After the first hip replacement, she wasn't healing and it was discovered that her femur broke, so she had a revision which has caused some issues. Falling was not the cause of the break. Apparently she has weak bones and it just happened. Again thank you for your story. It is important to let people know our experiences with this procedure. I think it can lessen fear!

As luck would have it I’m having my Left hip total replacement on 9/12/23 I had PT, 3 series of injections started to work. I had a CT scan and it showed that my hip is deteriorating from the inside out and she said it’s would be very bad for the hip to fracture and that would be a very bad day! Thanks for sharing. I just pass my 4 1/2 months. I also had a interior procedure. I was in great shape as a personal trainer going into this and doing the exercises although they weren’t easy I did them religiously like you did. The one thing my surgeon said because it was an interior cut not to bring my knee to my chest. I was just curious if your surgeon had any similar advice. I see that you did that often. Would love to get a response. I live in Los Angeles and I am 69 thank you.

Thank you for this inspiring video. My husband broke his hip (femur) Aug 12,’23 and had a rod and nail placed. Was doing pretty good with therapy but then in October he fell off an electric scooter onto the same hip cracking his acetabulum. 4 Trauma doctors decided against any surgery hoping that 12 weeks of non weight bearing would “heal” the socket/acetabulum. 10 weeks in he was hardly able to walk at all even with a walker, much less a cane. Fast forward to today - Feb., 9, ‘24 and we have obtained a second opinion from a new Orthopedist, and Total Hip Replacement has been requested by us, agreed upon by the doctor and scheduled for next week, Feb., 16. We PRAY this will be the answer to his EVER walking again. We have all the confidence in our doctor and Faith in God. Congratulations on your journey and continued healing. Thank you for your time.

I have had three hip replacement’s. My hips were not smooth in the joints and we’re making a popping sound when I would bend over and stand back up, and started to ache all the time. So it was double hip resurfacing which gives it a new socket and resurface of the femoral head . Had one done in June 2017 then got that left leg in shape by walking and knew I had to get it ready for the right to be done. Had the right done went great but then rolled over in bed to have my husband rub my leg dipped my knee inward (a no no that after it happened I read it on the hand out of what not to do.before two weeks)and felt a immediate pow from my hip to my foot…next day my husband said it’s swelling. 2am went to bathroom , and stepped with left then right and heard a clunk( had read about clunking on hip devices, then left step then right and it gave way and the device moved and broke my femur and like in slow motion landed on my butt didn’t hit anything on the way down in my mind as I was going down I thought it’s already failing? The device does not have time for bone to grow into it… if it has been a little over a week since surgery. Yell for my husband upstairs and said what happened and said I can’t stand on it… he got the walker in front of me and he said get your good leg ready and got me up lifting me up like a baby….1 1/2 hour drive and I didn’t have pain not from 2am to surgery 11 am next day… he did give me 2 pain pills because he wasn’t sure if I would go into shock, as soon as we got out on the main road I started singing the joy of the Lord is my strength :). We got there and they put in a full hip and I was good. I really didn’t have much pain with hip replacement . My one scar looks good but the one with double surgery is a little puckered but I don’t care I just know they don’t ache. Soon I’m getting a TKR right April 18th and then March 2025 the left and I hear those are more painful but I’m a bit of an anomaly at least one doctor told me that. The one thing my hip doctor told me to do is get out there and move walk to prevent blood clots. I will be bionic kat

Dear Sherri, Ohmygosh I am so happy to have found you - a very positive take on the anterior surgery in a sea of hip replacement videos. Though my doctor has put me on the waiting list for a replacement (here in Norway the wait is long🇳🇴), I am still on the fence. I am 69 years of age and I can hardly walk without pain, I’m still able to conduct 3 yoga classes each week (haha, I just omit pigeon pose and a few balancing asanas on the effected side) with little trouble. My fear is not being able to get back to teaching for fear of reduced mobility in a replacement ball socket. I will subscribe to your very lovely channel to see what more you have to impart on this subject that affects so many. So many thanks to you for this rare insight!🙏🏽

To move the heels up and down on the bed, put a plastic bag underneath your feet, and they will slide up and down very easily also works nicely under your fanny to turn on the bed just a little tip that I learned. It also works great. If you put a plastic bag on the car seat, sit down on it and then turn and swing your legs up and the plastic bag just helps you slip around.

Having just found your video and watching your progress its beenn a great help in helping me to decide to go ahead with my surgery, although this will be my 2nd on same leg which was done when was about 47, 83 this year, I was not intending to have it done. I was born with a dislocated left hip partial socket not found out until i was 3 years old because I skipped along rather than walked, suffered dreadful pain throughout my years never was given any pain relief until I was about 44. MY mother would massage warm olive oil into it .When it was replaced It was called a Charly replacement had to be sent to a hospital in another town as the surgeon was the only one who could perform the op. I had to lie on my back for two weeks before being allowed out of bed, hence the clot on my lung andthe pain of that operation is etched in my mind but seeing your excellent step by step progress has given me the confidence to go ahead and get it done .I had a total kneee replacement in October 23 on other leg you won't believe my luck 😂 after it was completed and the knee was being routinely bent the kneecap exploded and the surgeon had to go back in and repair it so instead of 3 days in hospital I was 4 weeks ans in a brace 8 weeks so not the luckiest of candidates but coming along nicely now .My hip is ready to collapse and i'm on the list, but I was weighing up do I put up with it or give myself a chance of relief for how many years I've left, so knowing if I exercise like you I could achieve better quality of life so really appreciate you taking the time to do this to help others ,thanks again.

As a 'senior', fitness means mobility and smart recreational activities. My physiotherapists suggest that I embrace a 'ski snob' attitude, where participation is in the best ski conditions, best light, a couple hours a session. I have had to give up fitness running. The impact is not recommended for bionic hipsters!

Just don’t fly first 6 weeks or get into pools risking infection. Prior to Op my Osteo gave me abductor band exercises to to in & outside pool preparing for op. Best advice. Brilliant result and needed to share.

Thank you Sherri for this video and a good dose of reality. I'm 3 weeks out for my surgery after almost 10 years of pain and looking forward to the challenge of returning to some sense of normal. And I agree with Suzie about people walking around 2 days after surgery, although that would be awesome, I don't believe that's the average situation for most folks.

Glad it helped, thanks for watching! My doctors always said to wait as long as I could until it majorly affected my quality of life -- because 1) medical advances were happening all the time and you want to get the best option available when you do it and 2) if they only last 20 years or so, you want to wait it out!

I am trying to raise the money for my surgery. Our insurance is terrible. Watching this made me tear up. I have scared tears and happy tears. You look amazing walking 6 weeks after surgery. I Had my left hip replaced in Oct. of 2022, I endured pain limping etc.. I live alone, I had my home "checked" by my PT prior to surgery, raised toilet , open walkway's etc. Had my Surgery on a Friday morning, came home early Sat. and on my own, pre-prepped 2 weeks worth of meals, had my walker and was determined to get back to "Normal" without the years of pain and limping. I had Virtually NO Pain after surgery, nothing compared to what I had endured for a few years prior. I live in a 1 story home, with only 4 porch steps to go down, Yes I had a Pt come in every 2 days, Though I prepped to the best of my ability, I did run out of cigarettes (Yes I smoke, Outside only, That was a challenge with the walker and a cane), After I ran out of cigs. (8 days), I decided to try and drive.. No Problem, awkward yes, though each day got easier and easier. I was Back to work in 7 weeks ( very physical job). AND Could Not Believe How great it was. Don't endure pain, limping, etc. Have a great doctor and do the PT and you will be Amazed how great it was.

😅Wonderful videos and you are a trooper! Your husband is so encouraging and supportive too. They suffer right along with us. Hopefully I'll be having my right hip replaced in July and I've been using a cane or walker for at least a year. The pain's been brutal. Getting in the car has become almost unbearable. Good grief!! My husband and I are both looking forward to me returning to full activity or even half way back to normal. I noticed that at one point you stopped referring to your legs as "my good leg" or "my bad leg". That's pretty much how our legs appear sometimes. I'm going to have my husband take videos too so I can rejoice in my progress as the days, weeks and months go by. Thank you again for your encouraging words and videos!! God bless you and you husband and family. Linda Nightingale

So happy to see this, scheduled for anterior hip replacement in 3 months. It started with knee Pain 2 years ago, 3 doctors really didn’t know what was wrong with the knee the 2nd and 3 rd doc believed I needed a partial knee replacement. After pkr got to about 80% better then I started having hip pain, went to 60% better. A friend of mine had her hip replaced and her knee pain went away so I told the doc I wanted a hip X-ray 8 months after knee surgery. He was absolutely surprised to see I had hip displasia, cysts in my hip and bone on bone at the top of the hip. Going to a different doc now 2000 miles away to get this taken care of. If you have knee pain and they can’t find anything wrong with your knee, try a hip X-ray. It’s been 2 long years since I have been able to walk very far, can’t wait to be normal again. I’ve been doing all the exercises in the video as they are the same for knee replacement so hoping my recovery is shorter.
