Thank you for this review, Reney. Very interesting and sad. I just cannot believe this book is a banned book. It truly blows my mind. This is such an inspiring read for both adults and children.

It's incredible, MJ! I can't even remember reading this in school. I'm sure I must have and the story is very familiar to me, of course. But her writing, her voice, her strength - all worth another, closer look. It's a gem!

Was so excited to hear you talk about this! I did not read the book yet, but it's definitely something I want to read to learn about the history. I don't believe the book was banned for me, but it was not in our reading curriculum. I think there's a level of scariness(?) about this book because it's a young girl's voice... I can hear from the way you talked about her word choices. But then I recognize the terror that's happening currently, and it's just a level of horror. Really appreciate the deep dive as to why it was banned! So ridiculously.

Yes, Anne was only 13 to 15 years old when she wrote this. It's amazing because she is so insightful and mature for her age especially considering she was basically being denied a normal adolescent social circle. Anyway, I'm so glad you liked the video - I'm proud of this one! And I LOVED the book - highly recommend.

Hi Reney. I've found you via Ellen and Pat. I have read this book so many times, firstly at school. My mum took me to visit the house in Amsterdam when I was 11. As you can imagine, it was incredibly moving. I just can't understand the standpoint on banning this (or any) book. We just don't see this here in the UK. This book is so special, poignant and moving. The ending is unbearable. Great review, you really did it justice. Liked and subscribed.

Thank you! I did work just a little harder on this one - I truly wanted it to feel like a tribute to Anne while discussing the ban, as well. Right now, the bans are very localized in the US - it might just be one state or even one county that has a ban or challenge. That challenge may just be in one area - such as school curriculum or even just the area of the library where the book can be shelved. But it is a growing concern here as more and more books are banned and challenged every year. Authors of color and LGBTQ authors are overwhelmingly targeted. I'm so proud to be part of #24BB Project to help spread the word! And thanks again for watching, subscribing and commenting!

Thank you for reviewing this important book. I remember being not really allowed to read it when I was young, due to the reasons listed for why it was banned. I did end up reading it, however, I think when I was around early high school age. I really appreciate your dialogue about this book and about why it is such an important read.

This is such a classic! I have to reread it every once in a while! And yes, Ann Frank does seem quite mature. I've also wondered if it was just the age she grew up in or the fact that war just tends to mature people faster!

There's a really well-made series on the Anne Frank House KZbin channel where they reimagined Anne's diary as a vlog. There are versions in both Dutch and English, so make sure you check out the English one :)

@@BeyondBooks-wt5il I think it could easily have been a terrible idea if they'd done it badly, but it's so well done it's unbelievable. It should be required viewing in school history lessons if you ask me!

@danecobain Rememer when we used to watch things like that in school and talk about them? Definitely, if something was well-done and age appropriate, we would learn so much! I can't remember ever watching anything that wasn't educational.

I’m sure the version I read was the expurgated version, and before what had happened afterward with the diary’s close was fully understood. I must get a recent copy.
