A while back I was working with a chord progression in the key of G flat I really liked. It was basically just the bass moving and the upper harmonies moving very little. As I started working on a melody, I realize that the chord progression was very close to A Day In The Life by The Beatles. So I quit writing the song and started learning the Beatles song instead. I had always loved the song but I’d never thought about trying to play it because of that weird middle section. So I took some liberties with the arrangement and that middle section to create some thing that I thought had, a similar energy using only piano. Once I had learned the song, I realized it was a little high for me in the key of G and took it back into G flat where I had started. It almost felt like I wrote the song myself. But I didn’t :-) I wish.
