Yes this was Saturday evening TV in the 70s. I was young but we liked the Dick Emery Show. Innuendo went over our heads, very much like pantomime humour. I always waited for the character who said 'you are awful, but I like you'

I had forgotten how funny Dick Emery was. I failed my first test but made it through at the second attempt. Had 2 no fault accidents in 51 years, no speeding tickets (more by luck than anything) and now living and driving on “the wrong side of the road” in Spain. Keep on reacting. ❤

Haha. Thanks for reacting to Dick Emery. He's very funny. My favourite character is Mandy, the one at the end who said, "Ooh, you are awful, but I like you." Please do more Dick Emery reactions. When I took my test a few years ago I was so nervous the car kangarooed out of the test centre. Because I was so anxious I went deaf and couldn't hear what the examiner was saying to me. Thankfully my nerves did settle down after a few minutes. My hearing came back and I passed. Wouldn't like to do it again though 😀

As you were talking about late night Television Jess... You brought back a distant memory of my childhood... When we used to ask our parents permission to stay up late... And watch several British Horror series during the 1970's and early 1980's... The first one was a series called... Hammer House Of Horror... The second series was called... Armchair Thriller... And the third series was called... Tales Of The Unexpected... And they were all quite scary for us as children... But we enjoyed being scared... Similar to the way that people like to be scared by Funfair Rides... They're typically not that scary to us now... But there are some episodes that can still make me jump... Even after all these years... And even though i know what's coming... You can still find several episodes and clips here on KZbin... One of my favourites was an episode of Armchair Thriller Called... Quiet As A Nun... 👻 All the very best guys. 👍

He was also in a few films in the 60s and early 70s including one called 'Ooh...... you are awful' which was based on the characters in his TV show. The plot was that he was trying to get a bank account number, the digits of which were tattooed on various women's bottoms! Very British saucy postcard humour of that time. The driving examiner for the vicar was an actor called Michael Knowles who has been in several comedy programmes particularly 'It ain't half hot mum' which was a big sitcom in the 70s. Not shown much now because it is considered to be 'racist' in these PC times but was very funny. He also appeared and even wrote some episodes of 'Are you Being Served' which I believe is on PBS in the States. Other great comedies from the 70s and 80s are Dad's Army, Some Mothers do ave em, Porridge, Fawlty Towers, Allo Allo and a slightly later one is One Foot in the Grave from the 1990's. As has been mentioned Harry Enfield is very good and the South African chemist sketch is one to see and also the caricatures of the 1940s Public Information Films one of which is 'Women Know Your Limits'. Finally as has also been mentioned Morecambe and Wise were the go to entertainment on a Saturday evening in the 1970s and also on Christmas Day with the Two Ronnies. Their Christmas Day 1971 sketch with the famous conductor Andre Previn is a classic.

Wikipedia: Richard Gilbert Emery (19 February 1915 - 2 January 1983) was an English comedian and comic actor. His broadcasting career began on radio in the 1950s, and his self-titled television series ran from 1963 to 1981. During 1953 he briefly formed a double act with Charlie Drake.[4] His television debut came in 1950 on The Centre Show on the BBC. He appeared on TV programmes including Round the Bend (BBC, 1955-56) and Educating Archie (ITV, 1958-59) and appeared with his friend Tony Hancock in several episodes of The Tony Hancock Show (ITV, 1956) and Hancock's Half Hour (BBC, 1957).[1] Educating Archie was a BBC Light Programme comedy show which was broadcast for nearly ten years between June 1950 and February 1960, mostly at lunchtime on Sundays. The programme featured ventriloquist Peter Brough and his doll Archie Andrews. The ventriloquist act was unique at the time as it was on the radio.

The Dick Emery Show was usually on at roughly 7 to 8:30 pm on BBC1. If I remember correctly, without consulting the BBC Genome Radio Times pages which are online, it was on Saturday evenings. Good grief, these are nearly fifty years old. The character actors with Dick are quite familiar to those of my generation. The actor with the 'Nervous Instructor' was Royce Mills. Michael Knowles was the instructor who took off with the vicar - Michael Knowles was regular cast on It Ain't Half Hot Mum about an army concert party in India during WW2. Anthony Sharp, the owner of the driving school, was frequently cast as supercilious professional or aristocratic types, notably a few years earlier in Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. He worked frequently with Benny Hill and also had a role in One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing.

My test pass was 30th October 1973 two weeks after a failure, of course my older sister was cock a hoop to say that she passed 1st time in the convertible shown in the sketch. The Anglia that crashed was a Ford Anglia. Wikipedia: The Ford Anglia is a small family car that was designed and manufactured by Ford UK. It is related to the Ford Prefect and the later Ford Popular. The Anglia name was applied to various models between 1939 and 1967. In total, 1,594,486 Anglias were produced. It was replaced by the Ford Escort. Unique variants of the Anglia were produced by Ford Australia and by the Italian subsidiary of Ford.

Your wife loved it, she was in stitches, especially VAN Gogh! I'm glad you loved the Dick Emery Driving test Scetch. Look out for these, Catherine Tate Nan and Lauren also Derek Scetches. The Iru Brew scetches are now banned in the UK, I think you know why, but they were hilarious. Mike, you said or sang, even though I used to be a Man! Look out for these: Marmite you either love it, or hate it. These will have you both wetting yourself with Laughter. The are un PC in the UK, but who cares, they were funny. One final thing Can I Come in your House? Mickey Flanagan. Mike your face was a picture, but your wife's face was red and so embarrassed. Great TV though. Best wishes From Nigel UK
