Got this album as a gift of a friend in the early 80s. Wore it out. Hadn't thought to listen to it for years, until last night when I took my daughter to a trad Irish music and dance Christmas show here in Portland. We were talking about the performances at the intermission and she said one of her favorite shows that I ever took her to was when Dick played a local pub in the early oughts. He offered up one of my favorite one liners of all time between songs: "It was a hard day when I realized that I was no longer an angry young man but just a bad tempered old bastard." Describes me very well and keeps me laughing to this day.

I'm unfortunately unpopular for liking folk singers that sing of woe, truth and inequality I feel so out of place in a world where profit before people is a constant bleat from the brainwashed. Surely if you count yourself as a decent human being you see people all over the world as an equal. Yes or no . I encounter all sorts of contrary opinions from people but they don't like my opinion when I say I'm not this or that on forms . I'm a human being . Anyone agree? Love Gaughan and Rosselson too . Brilliant singer/writers .

I agree wholeheartedly. Solidarity forever brother.

We need more songs that deal with the themes earlier periods of folk music reflected, but applied to our current, political, environmental, social landscapes... dealing with injustice, inequality, corruption, exploitation, the squandering + destruction of this magnificent planet, as well as as messages of how to connect, pull together for common causes, to benefit ALL vs the few...with lyrics that uphold the eloquence + power of the best writers... authentic and honest. As Billy Bragg noted in a recent interview on 'Q' on CBC, it's a tradition... a thread that links us through time + music...

Dick has now been promoted to father of traditional Scottish music .......Hamish Henderson is now the grandfather ......Ian green would certainly be on the committee for all the work he has done for the progress of the Scots music scene ......John BARROW was a leader in the 70 s when we tried to establish our sounds to the ordinary punters in various pubs during the summer months of yesteryear ........and Ian McALMAN was instrumental in helping the boys to keep our music alive ......and this LP is certainly one of dicks best , unfortunately today the musicians are all doctors of music ,and they don’t realise they are forgetting the TRADITIONAL type of music that was played in our yesterday’s . and there is not enough singing being allowed .HOWEVER dick perfectly shows on this beauty how it should be done

Got this album 40 years ago and it still speaks to me. I finally met Dick Gaughan at the Red Tractor Tavern in Ballard (Seattle) in 2001. Great, sardonic banter between songs. "In Scotland we're good at two things: Calvinism and glorious defeat."

I saw him once in my local folk club on the outskirts of London. He was mesmerising. He kept apologising for his accent. He thought we couldn't understand him! However we were used to and understood everything he said! What a lovely man. I'm glad I found this because I lost it as part of a divorce. So I don't feel bad for listening now because I paid for it originally.

Vile Arts Hahaha what a ridiculous comment.
@folksurvival6 жыл бұрын
Vile Arts Congratulations you can quote Eric Clapton. There was nothing wrong with what he said. He also had the courage to support Enoch Powell and both Clapton and Powell have been proven right with time. Clapton had the guts to stand up for his people when a lot of celebrities are too weak and cowardly to do so and he deserves respect for that. There's nothing "pathetic" about defending your people, nation and family. It is noble and important. Trying to do the right thing, as Clapton did , should not be looked down upon.
@honestpeoplearescum84016 жыл бұрын
LOL nationalism is a wet fart in the winds of time and "your people" is a fairytale followed by halfwits mystified by simple colours and shapes.
@folksurvival6 жыл бұрын
Vile Arts Why are you lying? Nationalism and groups of people that make up those nations and tribes have existed for hundreds of thousands of years. For as long as people have existed on this earth they have had families and been related to other people.
