Absolutely one of the most distinct, accomplished and impressive 'folk'/traditional performers of the last 70 years.

greatest folk album of all time, thanks for posting, I have the LP and a rare CD copy (yes it did come out on CD but seems that there have been issues with ownership/copyright), I hope one day this is remastered and reissued, it is such a beautiful album, and overlooked, everybody knows Handful of Earth, but this, his first, is far superior IMO. Utterly, utterly transcendent from start to finish.

In 1973 I was in London for a couple of days, and the pal played a shakuhachi album, and said " I was camping in the woods in California and a guy came out of the trees playing the shakuhachi .... " . Then he said " Chip " one of his housemates, " used to go out with Martin Carthy, this is her album ..... " . At the time the original pressing had all gone but of course the cassette had been invented in time for this momentous occasion, and when I got back to Birkenhead it was like a different world I had returned to, because of the tape in my bag. Two years later I moved to London for a while, and virtually the first thing I did was go to Collets and drop the secret phrase. He literally pulled it out from under the counter, and said " It's just been repressed " . As far as I know it came out on CD in the 90s. I have heard a vague reference to some kind of political correctness as the problem - it is too English apparently ......... I think it's really amusing, because good as he is, Dick never hit the same planet again by a factor of drastic. As you say, this album totally destroys all known folk albums, and he didn't even write the stuff. This could easily pass as the greatest record in history as far as I'm concerned. I had the good fortune to catch him over the water in an upstairs room of a pub, no amplification, in 79. Saw him once more when he had buckets outside the Bluecoat after the gig, for the miners strike. Every single track on this album, which I've heard thousands of times, catapults me into space as it kicks off. And I'll get you your ladder !"£$%^&*()_++_)(*&^%$£"!
