This is a master class on copyright management, narcissism (It’s Beatty we’re talking about), and some surreal trolling a la Andy Kaufman. Look forward when the copyright expires in three years and then you’ll see what others come up with.

Dick Tracy and some of his supporting characters (like Pat Patton) go out of copyright in three years, but the best Dick Tracy villains didn't come along until the very late 1930s through the 1940s, so what you could do with public domain Tracy would be kind of limited, with no Pruneface, Flattop, Mumbles, the Mole, or those other weirdos being available yet.

I got a lot of questions, but the answer I want is why the two interviewers in the same room on the same couch are in different zoom boxes when they're in the same office. The most wonderful moment of this is 6:15 when they're putting on their pre-recorded zoom that is supposed to be them greeting "Dick Tracy" on the call, but the humans in frame are clearly watching without speaking. This is media derangement to fluff Warren Beatty's right to use the character with a minimum of effort (and deny others the ability to), even though he's apparently too old and sundowny to do more than Rifftrax his old shit when he was young, and then use Dick Tracy to complain about movie-goers and realism. "Seriousness of movies," alright.

This is just bizarre. And yet, I couldn’t stop watching. A shame that Beatty’s vanity prevented him from wearing a nose befitting Dick Tracy in the 1990 movie (even as everyone else but the ladies in the movie was covered in prosthetics). Then again, he really wouldn’t want to put it on for these rights-retaining vignettes.

Now this is how you hold on to movie rights without ruining the brand. Sony should learn from this if they can't cobble a Spider-Man movie together.
@BobBrinkman
@BobBrinkman 9 ай бұрын
Without ruining the brand? By holding onto it out of spite for over thirty years until its presence in modern pop-culture barely resonates? He has thoroughly devalued the brand by making sure nobody under 40 even cares who Dick Tracy is. Sure, I'd go see another Dick Tracy movie, but I'm hardly the target audience for a Hollywood blockbuster. Nope, he has well and truly killed it.

@@BobBrinkman Beatty has rights only to live action movies. If they wanted, they could make animated shows, video games etc.
@BobBrinkman
@BobBrinkman 9 ай бұрын
@@Aivottaja wrong. He sued Tribune media to stop their planned TV series and owns all television and movie rights. Yes, comic books can be made (the last was a lackluster series in 2018). Video game tech at the time of the movie was in a pretty poor state but, had a game been successful, that certainly might have helped. But, instead, Beatty has destroyed the value of the property by actively working to prevent movie and television adaptations (including animated). ,
@Aivottaja
@Aivottaja 9 ай бұрын
@@BobBrinkman Oh. Then I take back all I said in the original comment. Beatty pretty much has sabotaged the DT brand while hoarding the rights and doing nothing with them. I didn't know his rights extended to anything but live action movies. I stand corrected. I mean, assuming video games were exempt, they could probably do an awesome game. But even if that were possible, it would feel incomplete when the character itself would be mostly Beatty's hostage. I hope the rights revert back after Beatty kicks the bucket (which probably isn't too long ahead, given his age). That is, unless it will all just go to his inheritors who would just keep on sitting them as well, expecting a ludicrous sum of money to give them up.
@BobBrinkman
@BobBrinkman 9 ай бұрын
@@Aivottaja yeah. The worst part is that he hasn’t been punishing the studio who killed his planned trilogy, but the company that made his movie possible in the first place. It is estimated that those rights were worth about $100 million or so. It is a real shame. The planned tv series might have revitalized the character to the point where we might’ve gotten a legacy sequel to the movie by now.

Big fan BIIIIIIIIIIIG fan of the 1990 film. Own it on 3 formats and have the poster of Beatty in a tommy gun toting silhoutte all nicely framed on my wall. Hes always wanted to get a 2nd picture done, and the 1990 film was originally slated for a trilogy, especially after competing with Batman from the yr prior. Sadly, part of the Disney Studios where much of it was filmed, burned down. In addition, Warrens always had some legal stipulations with the characters rights, but I LOVED the vibrance of color in that movie as well as the old timey music of the early 20th century.

Warren Beatty is pulling a 1994 "Fantastic Four" here. 😆 I like Beatty as an actor and thought his movie version of "Dick Tracy" was a lot of fun, but maybe it's time to let someone else have the rights and try another adaption. You could do a lot with a Dick Tracy film that was more serious (but not too serious).

If he actually does a new Dick Tracy movie, that would....well, I love comic books largely because of the impact the 1990 movie had on me as a kid. I was obsessed b4 I even saw the movie, on finding out it was based on comic books. If Warren Beatty manages to make a new Dick Tracy movie ...man, I'd love that! Would Danny Elfman return to score? Is that even right? How could he one-up the original 1990 score, though? It'd be cool to have cameos from some of the original actors, too
@IsmailofeRegime
@IsmailofeRegime 11 ай бұрын
There's probably zero chance it'll happen. I doubt Beatty has the same clout he did in 1990 to get so many big-name actors involved, I doubt studio executives would sign on to it, I doubt Beatty would hire Elfman again (given the personal scandals Elfman's been accused of), and Beatty's perfectionism would probably derail it to oblivion even if none of the other factors I mentioned were issues.

This is utter, weird brilliance. I also love that it was made exclusively to keep Beatty's rights to the character, which is the correct idea. As a man of an older Hollywood, I'm sure he senses (on some level or other) the truth about movies in the 2020s: That there is NOBODY working for the major studios today that is at all capable of making a movie or TV series about the character without utterly desecrating it. Can you imagine what the kind of assholes who did the Rae Star Wars or Netflix Lord of the Rings would do to Chester Gould's stalwart hero? As a lifelong Tracy fan myself, I hope Beatty holds the rights until Hollywood is reduced to a smoking crater in WW3.
