Stephen Ambrose gave us a gift but also had a bad habit of not doing proper research on the stories he was told. From Dick Winters’ perspective, E Company was the first to Berchtesgaden & the Eagle’s Nest. He just didn’t know that the 3rd ID was already there. Also, that photo of Winters and the officers of Easy Company that is often tagged as being at the Eagle’s Nest is not the Eagle’s Nest. Good video!

Seems like the title of the 7th Infantry Regiment's unit history "From Fedala to Berchtesgaden" was a deliberate call to attention that they were the first in. Highly recommended read for anyone interested in older source material (it can be downloaded for free on the digital archives).

Very interesting it certainly puts the series in a new perspective, about how certain facts and people like Blithe and Soble were portrayed for artistic purpose. Thanks for this fact check.

I seem to remember another mistake in episode 2 - Brécourt Manor. There is a scene where one of the soldiers fires a Browning .30 cal. mg and then grabs it with two hands, one on the barrel cooling jacket, while running to change positions. Anyone who has experience firing a Browning .30 cal. knows that you can not hold that barrel jacket with a bare hand after firing. It seems that Cap. Dye missed this. A ll in all though, I think he did excellent work.

There used to be US AFRC (Armed Forces Recreation Center) lodging in the Berchtergadener Hof. I believe it shut down in 1992. I stayed there several nights.

In my opinion the inaccuracies are kind of understandable when you view the whole thing as being Easy Company's recollection of what happened. They apparently honestly thought they'd gotten there first (the men on the ground at the time, not in retrospect) and the story is told through that lens. It's one of those things that I feel would have strayed too far from the book and the men's memories of the war to change it, which even as a historian I can understand why it's portrayed the way it is. It's not a documentary, it's basically a unit memoir, and this is how they remembered it.

Yeah, this is the second channel I have come across that corrects a lot of "mistakes" created by Ambrose in his book, mistakes that Hanks and Spielberg should have picked up on with just a little fact finding..........but being Hollywood, they took "artistic licence" to make a movie.

I think the biggest blunder in "Band of Brothers" had to do with Pvt. Bly. The wrong guy was depicted, but producers didn't know this until after the show was made. Oops.

Umm, the series had made quite a few serious blunders before this one including getting the deaths of men wrong, which no offense I find much more aggrisous than this. But this is also a solid point in fact.

I will by 10 bottles of a pre-war Chateau La Fite Rothschild's wine for that price. I dont drink much, but know the price now is closer to $10,000-$15,000 each.

Movie depictions of war will never be accurate. Fog of war, many different views, but mainly, cant put full details of an operation or battle into a film. 101 had a few days in the nest, but only have 1 hour of tv time, so films are a summary of what happened.
