You guys arguing about Dickey, Duane and Gregg are all nuts. It's not a competition. Each one of them was and is great. And they are were/are even greater when they do it together.

Bout 25yrs ago, dickey played at a club down the street from me. He had a keyboard player, bass, drummer and himself. One of the best shows i ever saw. Plus his tone was a little heavier and his leads had a lot of fire power. He did a 2 1/2 hour set. No breaks or guests . He played blues, jazz, rock, hard rock, country, southern rock, surf, and fusion

Dickey Betts is and always will be an outstanding guitarist, Duane actually said in a "Guitar Player Magazine" interview that he was often credited with the licks that Dickey played. Dickey and Duane played off of each other and with a fire that will never be repeated without them in the Allman Brothers Band

Buddy walked up to wife standing at the bar & played for her when he walked away she slipped between Buddy & body guard, She made it til they were ready to go back on stage, they politely asked her to back off & she did.

when Dickey came to the Cruz, we shared a limo and driver from SFO, I am not the type to list my concerts or be starstruck, just love the talent and the music. Such a regular guy and a warm personality, you can hear music in his everybreath, and I dig it. Sometimes the man is even greater than the music. All things Betts, Allman, Trucks, Tedschi- I can't get enough until I have s'mo. So unassuming and where blues was born these bands play every genre, rocking and blue, jazz and southern style fusions. Gotta love that music, truly respect the people behind it, all of 'em. Dicky is a real special guy. He can share my ride anytime, besides, it got me in the door, and we do know how to have a great time down here in this smoking town of waves and rides... time to go. Have a great day y'all.

Dickey was always a great guitarist. Still,I can't help but think that the spirit of Duane was always on his shoulder. The constant comparisons and questions of "what if" had to have been an inspiration or goad. In any case Dickey fully rose to the occasion and became one of the true "Greats" of guitarists ever. Chicken or the egg". He doesn't get the respect he deserves.

As Reggie Jackson said about himself and the Yankees of the late 70's, Dickey was the straw that stirred the drink. As transcendent as Duane was, it was really Dickey kicked their ass. His ability as a writer, singer, and his take-no-prisoners attitude brought out the best in the ABB.

Right you both are. Used to go to the Beacon every March. Last was 2000 after which Dickey was fired. Ticked me off so I didn't see again until 8/2002 in Raleigh, NC. Lasted about 30 mins. Warren & Derek though great guitarist have similar styles. To me it sounded a little like cats fighting.

I couldn't go as far as saying Duane was the leader but he was probably the most accessible and fun loving of the band. Most bands didn't want a leader, Duane was the spokesman to be sure. Without Duane Dickey Greg Barry Butch and Jaimoe there would not have been an Allman Brothers Band is actually the only way to put it. Tragedy of drugs, alcohol and reckless behavior can take a toll quickly when there is fame and fortune involved.
@Santanajimi12 жыл бұрын
Hey things happen in everyones life. And yes, Duane was the guy in the original lineup. But For all the coming years, it is pretty obvious, that without Greg ? How could there be an Allman Bros Band ? Nothing was or ever will be like that lineup with Duane.......but i will take what i can get!

Its funny because my one buddy didn't know that 3 of his favorite solos was not johnny but derringer. After all that, my top 3 favorite solos from filmore east are from duane My top 3 favorite solos from the Johnny winter and , johnny winter and live. 2 from derringer and 1 from johnny.Overall all of them are great and IMO blow the pants off the guitarists from the british invasion

The fact is,, Betts WAS the Allman brothers after Duane passed! If you don't think so,, just see how good the band would be without: Memory of Eliz. Reed, Ramblin man, "Southbound", Blue sky, Jessica, and a lot more! He really WAS the Allman brothers,, no disrespect for Gregg at all,, he was the other half, the best darn blues singer, ever! Fact!

with all due respect to Dickey-great player he is- Duane made the Allman Brothers! Dickey at times almost destroyed the band with his divisiveness. The Allman Brothers are my favorite band and Dickey did a lot to create who they are but without Duane, Berry and Greg the band would'nt have gotten off the ground.

Hey Joe, I think the point i was trying to make was that blues did not originate in the USA. I am pretty sure Irish folk songs had the 1 4 5 progression with the fast 4. I guess it depends on your definition of blues. Not sure if there is an agreed upon definition. However i think it would be safe to say some permutation of the 1 4 and 5 , non modal using pentatonic notes. haha can't rember why i posted originally.

Blues is American can be. It is the result music native to Africa blended right here in the South with that of the European; a melange of two cultures in contact. Or said another way, Blues is mainly music forms new to the the enslaved population being interpreted through their "ears."
