The literal meaning of "Menkata Cottelee" is hard noodle, thick soup, specifically a word used in a ramen chain called Jiro. They sung in their previous song "maximum the hormone" about how much they love that junky ramen and they would eat it day and night without giving a shit about their health. They were saying that their fat and greasy appearance won't matter as long as they deliver quality music and continue to rock people. That's why some fans complained when Ryo changed his premise and lost his weight (to be fair, nobody really knew he had serious health issues at the time). This song is an answer song to them, saying "fxxk you I'm gonna live longer than you". Towards the end he redefines the word Menkata Cottelee, saying that he will live a cottelee(=thick) life, instead of just having a cottelee(=heavy,oily,greasy) appearance. That's why it's called maximum the hormone II and the more direct translation of the Japanese subtitle is "Let's talk about the new meaning of Menkata Cottelee". I got goosebumps when I first saw the lyrics. It was SO cool.

This song is about Ryo-kun (the guitar vocal) , who used to be fat but has shaped him up well recently, as he got sick, gout. The lady in the colorful scene is the drummer, also the elder sister of Ryo-kun. She claims being fat is no problem and he should enjoy eating fat foods.

@@noambruh the explanation is wrong, Nao's part is actually in reference to the comments they were getting about Ryo's weight, saying how they miss the old fat Ryo and don't want him being fit, while the rest of the song is pretty much as this guy said, it's all about how Ryo got sick from being too overweight and decided to change his lifestyle and is proud of it.

So, just browsed through the comments, and I didn't find anything that actually explained this song or video. The beginning is playing older Maximum The Hormone songs. Showing the guitarist/singer as a heavy man. In one video it started with him vomiting on the TV, which you saw in this. The point of the video, which focused on Ryo(singer) eating at every chance, was to show that he lost a "ton" of weight. Basically, doctors told him if you continue as you are, you'll die. So, he decided to eat better and lose weight, so that he could live and continue doing what he's doing. This song is about the transition and how food is terrible for you(at least tasty food), but living is more important. It's not about ramen.
@dicodec4 жыл бұрын
That explains it. Thanks you so much for breaking that down for us! 🤘
@SuicidebyYourMom4 жыл бұрын
More importantly, the lyrics highlight the pain, discomfort and fear felt in realizing the poor nature of his health. The section that Nao sings is from the perspective of fans that criticized this change, seeming to prefer fat Ryo-kun. Wrapping it up is Ryo citing obesity health statistics in Japan. It's equal parts "here's a painful journey I endured" and "don't like it? So what?" All wrapped up in the usual, failing to disappoint MTH fashion.
@pratosaurusrex11284 жыл бұрын
SuicidebyYourMom Ryo apparently got a lot of hate from some MTH fans for losing the weight (why??) so that would make sense

In heavy side of this song is the message from main vocalist who is totally tired of being unhealthy (getting lots of fatty food), and he managed to loose his weight at this moment. And he is shouting "I don't want to go back to unhealthy life any more" throughout this song. On the other hand, female vocalist sings " I don't give a shit, go crazy my brother! we don't want any healthy guy in our band". And finally he gave up and eat superfatty ramen at last.
@dicodec4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for explaining that to us!

@@dicodec Just a small correction. The guitarist was told by his doctor to basically diet or die in the next few years, but a big contingent of fans were upset and complaining that he wasn't this big cuddly bear anymore. This song is basically a giant "fuck off" to that part of their fandom, with the drummer mockingly singing the fan's perspective. I think the ending with the food is more of an "obviously I'm still eating and enjoying myself".

comment for dicodec. the beginning sequence was a callback to a previous video, a pop song(by MTH) that was interrupted by Ryo vomiting on the television that was playing it. then it showed a sequence of clips of Ryo pre-weightloss, and then we go into the video where Ryo is looki.g much slimmer and the whole band is surrounded by junk food. this leads me to the belief that this song is about the dangers of unhealthy food and its correlation to weight gain and Ryo had something to say about it. I'm guessing the girls "KZbin comment" at the beginning also was about Ryo and his size/ or her size(she was a bigger girl). I dont speak or read japanese, I'm just guessing.

Loving your reactions! Two recommendations for you: Yoshu Fukushu by Maximum the Hormone for more crazy awesome metal goodness. Next, check out Band-Maid, an all girl rock band where the members dress up like maids and play kick ass hard rock. Nao-chan, the drummer for MTH, is the favorite drummer of Akane (Band-Maid’s drummer) and the reason she decided to try to drum harder and louder. And fwiw, when Jimmy Page (yes, THAT Jimmy Page) saw Band-Maid live, he went backstage to meet Akane. She, and honestly the rest of the band, are THAT good. Check out Domination (live), Blooming (music video), or Dice (Music video) as great starting points. The Japanese music scene is second only to the american one in size. There’s a lot of great music coming out of Japan in all genres, and their rock and metal scene is dope AF

In this song, the guitarrist vents his anger at his overweight fans, who were "canceling" him for being too skinny now, not realizing that he almost died from gout and lost weight to survive, and that they only want him fat so they can get an excuse for having as shitty eating habbits as he did, and they all should be ashamed, etc, etc. Pretty cool wake-up call of a song.

At the end when he is talking into the megaphone he gives stats on food related illnesses that are costing japanese citizens their health in an effort to tell those who want him fat and in pain once more to fuck off as he would rather die healthy and live with as little pain as possible than to be in pain all the time.
